Chapter 5: The Storage Unit Nobody Was Supposed to Find
Thomas arrived at the hospital at noon.
He was my neighbor, my daughter's unofficial grandfather, and the closest thing I had to family outside Rachel's side.
He took one look at my face and stopped smiling.
"Daniel, what's happened?""
I handed him my phone.
He watched Rachel's video without saying a word.
When it ended, he sat down heavily.
"Good Lord.""
"I need you to stay with Maya.""
"Where are you going?""
"To the storage facility.""
Thomas looked at the silver key.
"Alone?""
"Not exactly.""
I explained that Michael, my lawyer, was meeting me there. Thomas immediately offered to come along.
I agreed.
Before leaving, I spoke with Mrs. Bennett and Lewis.
They confirmed that Maya would remain in the hospital under additional security precautions. Vanessa and Gregory were no longer authorized visitors.
I also gave them copies of the threatening messages.
Then I kissed Maya's forehead.
"I'll be back soon.""
She caught my sleeve.
"Daddy?""
"Yes?""
"If you find Mom's blue box, don't let Aunt Vanessa have the little envelope.""
"What envelope?""
Maya looked uncomfortable.
"Mom said it had the names.""
I wanted to ask more, but she had already turned toward the window.
I squeezed her hand.
"I'll be careful.""
The storage facility was twenty minutes from the hospital.
It sat behind a row of warehouses, surrounded by a tall metal fence and security cameras.
The sign above the entrance read HARBOR STORAGE.
Michael was waiting near the office.
He looked as though he hadn't slept.
"Daniel.""
He shook my hand.
"Did you watch the video?""
"Yes.""
He looked toward Thomas.
"Then we need to be very careful.""
The facility manager, an older man named Mr. Collins, led us through a long corridor of metal doors.
"Unit B-17," he said.
"Your wife's account was unusual.""
"How?""
"She paid three years in advance. Cashier's checks. She also requested that nobody be allowed access without the original key and written authorization from her attorney.""
I looked at Michael.
He nodded.
"That was Rachel's instruction.""
Mr. Collins stopped at the door.
A small blue sticker was attached near the handle.
B-17.
I took the silver key from my pocket.
For a moment, I couldn't insert it.
I imagined Rachel standing there, carrying boxes, carefully arranging the things she wanted to protect.
Had she known she might never come back?
I pushed the key into the lock.
It turned.
The door rolled upward with a metallic groan.
Inside was a small storage room.
There were cardboard boxes, plastic containers, an old wooden desk, and a large blue trunk.
On the wall hung a framed photograph of Rachel holding Maya as a baby.
I walked toward it.
My wife was smiling.
I touched the glass.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Thomas stood quietly behind me.
Michael opened the first cardboard box.
It contained bank statements, legal documents, and several envelopes.
He examined them carefully.
"Daniel, this is serious.""
"What?""
"These are records of transfers from Rachel's family trust.""
He placed several pages on the desk.
"Over eighteen months, more than $640,000 was transferred into accounts controlled by a company registered under Vanessa's name.""
My knees weakened.
"Six hundred and forty thousand?""
Michael nodded.
"Rachel discovered it and started collecting evidence.""
I looked at the blue trunk.
"Is that where the second video is?""
Michael examined the lock.
"Probably.""
I tried the silver key.
It opened.
Inside were photographs, old letters, a small digital recorder, and a sealed envelope with my name written across it.
My hands shook as I picked it up.
The handwriting was Rachel's.
*For Daniel. Only if Vanessa has tried to take Maya.*
I opened it.
There was a letter.
My love,
If you are reading this, I failed to protect our little girl the way I promised.
Please don't blame yourself. Vanessa has been manipulating people for years. I believed she would stop when I confronted her, but I was wrong.
She wants the money, but the money isn't the only reason.
She believes Maya's inheritance gives her a right to control our daughter.
It doesn't.
There is a document in this box that explains everything. Read it before you watch the second video.
I turned the page.
A folded legal document was attached.
It was a copy of Rachel's mother's original trust agreement.
I scanned the first page.
Then the second.
My eyes stopped at a paragraph near the bottom.
The trust was established for Rachel's children.
Not just Maya.
Rachel had a younger brother, James, who had died in a car accident when he was twenty-three.
He had left behind a daughter.
A little girl named Sophie.
I had met her only twice.
She was now eight years old.
According to the document, Maya and Sophie were equal beneficiaries.
But there was something else.
If either child's parent died, the surviving parent would become the primary trustee, with an independent attorney overseeing all transactions.
Vanessa had no legal authority over either child.
Yet her name appeared on a separate document claiming she was the appointed guardian and trustee.
Michael examined it.
"This is fraudulent.""
I looked at him.
"How do you know?""
"Because the document was supposedly signed by Rachel and James on the same date.""
"James had been dead for three years by then.""
Michael went pale.
He turned the paper over.
At the bottom was a witness signature.
Gregory Shaw.
I felt sick.
"He's been helping her all along.""
Michael nodded slowly.
Then he noticed a smaller envelope tucked underneath the trust agreement.
It contained a handwritten list.
Six names.
Beside each name was an amount of money.
At the top, Rachel had written:
*People who were paid to keep quiet.*
I recognized the first name.
Gregory Shaw.
The second name was a school administrator.
The third was a doctor.
And the fourth—
My blood turned cold.
It was the name of the police detective who had investigated Rachel's death.
Thomas stepped closer.
"Daniel?""
I couldn't answer.
Then a sound came from the corridor.
A metallic crash.
Someone had entered the storage facility.
Mr. Collins appeared at the doorway.
His face was pale.
"Sir, there's a woman at the front desk asking for this unit.""
Michael immediately closed the blue trunk.
"Who?""
Mr. Collins swallowed.
"She says she's Rachel Carter's sister.""
I stared at him.
"Vanessa?""
He nodded.
"She says she has a court order.""
Then my phone rang.
Maya's name appeared on the screen.
I answered immediately.
"Sweetheart?""
Her voice was shaking.
"Daddy, Aunt Vanessa is back.""
I stood up.
"Where is she?""
"Outside my room.""
May you like
Then Maya whispered something that made the entire storage room go silent.
"She brought the man from the photograph.""
