Chapter 13: The Truth Beneath the House

Eleanor Carter stood at the top of the basement stairs, holding a gun with both hands.

She looked older than the woman in the photographs.

Her silver hair was tied neatly behind her head. Her black coat was buttoned to the throat. Her face carried the same calm expression I remembered from family dinners, Christmas mornings, and the funeral where we had buried an empty coffin.

Behind her stood Vanessa.

And beside Vanessa was Gregory Shaw.

I looked at Ethan.

He had moved behind me, one hand pressed against his bruised ribs.

"Stay behind me," I whispered.

Eleanor smiled.

"Still pretending you're a father, Daniel?""

I turned toward her.

"Put the gun down.""

"You're in no position to give orders.""

"Where is James?""

Her smile disappeared.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Mother, we don't have time for this.""

Mother.

The word struck harder than the gun in Eleanor's hands.

I looked at Vanessa.

"You knew she was alive.""

Vanessa shrugged.

"Of course.""

"You let us bury her.""

"Nobody forced you to believe the death certificate.""

"You attended her funeral.""

"People attend funerals for all sorts of reasons.""

I wanted to cross the room and grab her.

But Ethan's hand tightened around my arm.

"Don't," he whispered.

Gregory moved toward the filing cabinets.

"Give me the trust documents, Daniel.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You're standing in a hidden basement full of stolen records, and you still think I'm going to hand you anything?""

Gregory's expression hardened.

"You don't understand what you're looking at.""

"Then explain it.""

Eleanor lowered the gun slightly.

"Very well.""

She walked down three steps.

"Your wife was never supposed to discover the truth. Rachel was curious. Too curious. She started asking questions about James, about the trust, about the children.""

"Why did you fake your death?""

"Because Rachel had begun working with Michael. I needed everyone to believe I was gone.""

"Did you kill Rachel?""

Eleanor looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa looked away.

That was enough.

"Answer me!""

Eleanor sighed.

"Rachel was difficult. She refused to cooperate. She threatened to expose everything.""

"Did you kill her?""

"No.""

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

"Mother, stop pretending. You didn't have to push her down the stairs. You only had to make sure nobody helped her afterward.""

My stomach turned.

Vanessa continued.

"Rachel was alive when I found her. She was lying at the bottom of the stairs. She was conscious. She knew exactly what had happened.""

I stepped forward.

"You left her there?""

"She had already ruined everything.""

"You left my wife to die.""

"She was going to destroy my life!""

Ethan moved beside me.

"That's what you told Mom, too.""

Vanessa froze.

"What?""

Ethan's voice trembled, but he continued.

"I heard you arguing with Rachel. You said she had no right to tell Daniel about the children.""

Eleanor raised the gun again.

"Enough.""

I looked at Gregory.

"Now explain why Ethan thinks you're his father.""

Gregory's face changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Eleanor answered.

"Because he is.""

She placed a folder on the desk.

"Years ago, Gregory and Vanessa had a relationship. Vanessa became pregnant. But the family could not afford a scandal.""

Vanessa snapped, "Don't.""

Eleanor ignored her.

"James agreed to raise the child as his own. He loved Sophie. He believed he could protect her.""

I stared at her.

"Sophie is Gregory's daughter?""

"Yes.""

"Then why did you take her from Patricia?""

"Because Sophie is a Carter beneficiary. Her inheritance is substantial. Gregory wanted control of it.""

Gregory stepped forward.

"That was never the only reason.""

Eleanor turned toward him.

"Don't embarrass yourself.""

I looked at Ethan.

"And him?""

Eleanor's expression softened in a way that made my skin crawl.

"Eleven years ago, you were involved in a terrible accident. Your wife, Laura, discovered that Gregory had been manipulating the family trust. She threatened to expose him.""

"Then what happened?""

"Your accident gave us an opportunity.""

My hands curled into fists.

"They took Ethan?""

"Laura was frightened. We offered her money to leave. When she refused, Gregory arranged the custody documents.""

"And the accident?""

Eleanor said nothing.

Gregory looked at the floor.

I understood.

They had arranged the accident.

They had erased my memories.

They had separated me from my son.

Then they had allowed me to build a new life with Rachel, who eventually discovered the same conspiracy.

"Why?"" I whispered.

Eleanor finally answered.

"Because your mother had established the trust in the grandchildren's names. Not ours. We were supposed to manage it, but the children would eventually control it.""

"So you stole from them.""

"We protected what belonged to the family.""

"You stole from children.""

Eleanor's eyes narrowed.

"Children don't understand money. Adults do.""

A sudden noise came from above.

Someone was shouting.

Then I heard a familiar voice.

"Police! Nobody move!""

Sergeant Brooks.

Eleanor swung the gun toward the staircase.

Gregory grabbed Vanessa's arm.

Everything happened at once.

Vanessa shoved Gregory into the filing cabinet. Ethan pulled me down as a gunshot struck the concrete wall.

The lights went out.

I heard footsteps, shouting, and the sound of something heavy falling.

Then a flashlight beam cut through the darkness.

"Daniel!""

Brooks appeared at the bottom of the stairs with two officers.

"Hands where I can see them!""

Eleanor was on the floor.

Her gun lay several feet away.

Vanessa was against the wall, crying.

Gregory had disappeared through a narrow doorway behind the shelves.

Brooks pointed toward it.

"Officer, after him!""

One officer ran.

The other helped Ethan.

I grabbed Eleanor's coat.

"Where is Gregory going?""

She smiled through her tears.

"To finish what James started.""

I turned toward the hidden doorway.

Beyond it was a narrow corridor leading deeper beneath the house.

On the wall hung a photograph of James.

Underneath it were three words written in Rachel's handwriting.

*HE NEVER DIED.*
