Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Backpack
I didn't sleep that night.
Not because the hospital room was uncomfortable.
Not because I was worried about Maya's fever.
I couldn't sleep because of seven words.
*Mom didn't fall.*
At 2:15 a.m., Maya finally drifted off.
I sat beside her bed, staring at the photograph.
Rachel and Vanessa were smiling in it.
They looked like sisters.
They had been close for years, even before Rachel married me. Vanessa had been the person Rachel called when she needed advice, when she wanted to complain about work, or when she needed someone to watch Maya.
After Rachel died, Vanessa became even more involved.
She picked Maya up from school twice a week. She brought groceries. She organized Rachel's memorial service.
I had thanked her.
More times than I could count.
Now every memory felt different.
At 3:06 a.m., my phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
*Stop asking Maya questions. You don't know what she found.*
I read it twice.
Then another message arrived.
*Give Vanessa the backpack.*
I stood up.
Someone knew what was inside.
Someone knew Maya had spoken.
I took a screenshot and forwarded it to the hospital's security desk.
Ten minutes later, a security officer named Lewis entered the room.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“Someone has requested access to your daughter's medical records and asked whether she is being discharged today.””
“Who?””
He checked his tablet.
“Vanessa Carter.””
My jaw tightened.
“She isn't her legal guardian.””
“I understand, sir. We have flagged the request.””
Lewis glanced at the photograph on the bedside table.
“Is there a problem?””
I hesitated.
Then I showed him the threatening messages.
His expression hardened.
“I'll arrange additional security outside this room.””
“Thank you.””
After he left, I pulled Maya's backpack closer.
There was something strange about the little pocket.
The zipper seemed stuck.
I carefully turned the bag inside out.
A small piece of fabric had been sewn over the bottom of the pocket. It was nearly invisible.
I found a pair of scissors in my overnight bag and gently cut the loose stitches.
Something fell into my palm.
A tiny silver key.
Attached to it was a paper tag.
*B-17.*
I stared at it.
Then I remembered.
The storage facility.
Rachel had rented a small unit there several years earlier. She had told me it contained old family belongings and childhood photographs.
After her death, I had gone once to collect some boxes.
But the manager told me the rental had been transferred into someone else's name.
Vanessa.
I had assumed Rachel had arranged it before she died.
Now I wasn't so sure.
At 7:30 a.m., Maya opened her eyes.
“Daddy?””
I immediately moved closer.
“I'm here.””
She looked at the key in my hand.
“You found it.””
“Sweetheart, what's B-17?””
Maya rubbed her eyes.
“Mom said if anything happened, I should give it to you.””
“Why didn't you tell me earlier?””
“Because Aunt Vanessa said you'd be angry.””
I gently touched her cheek.
“I would never be angry with you for telling me the truth.””
Maya's lower lip trembled.
“She said you would think I was making things up.””
I felt something break inside me.
“Did she tell you what happened to Mom?””
Maya nodded.
“She said Mom was clumsy. That she fell because she was tired.””
“And what do you think?””
Maya looked down.
“Mom was scared that night.””
I leaned closer.
“Why?””
“She told me to stay in my room. Then I heard Aunt Vanessa shouting.””
My chest tightened.
“What did she say?””
Maya squeezed the blanket.
“I don't remember everything.””
“That's okay.””
“But I remember one thing.””
She looked directly into my eyes.
“Aunt Vanessa said, 'You should have signed it when I asked.''”
I felt cold.
“Signed what?””
Maya shook her head.
Then she added something else.
“Mom said she would rather lose everything than let Vanessa take it.””
I sat back.
Everything.
What could Rachel have owned that Vanessa wanted so desperately?
Our house?
Her savings?
Something from her family?
I had never been involved in Rachel's financial affairs beyond our joint account. She handled most of her mother's estate paperwork herself.
I had trusted her.
And I had trusted Vanessa.
A nurse entered to check Maya's blood pressure.
Her name was Olivia.
She smiled at Maya, then glanced at the backpack.
“Feeling better, sweetheart?””
“A little,” Maya answered.
Olivia checked the monitor.
“Your dad hasn't moved much, has he?””
Maya managed a small smile.
“He's guarding the door.””
Olivia chuckled.
“Well, that's a good father.””
Then she turned to me.
“Mr. Carter, the doctor wants to speak with you about Maya's discharge.””
My daughter grabbed my hand.
“No.””
I looked at Olivia.
“She isn't ready.””
“Of course,” Olivia said gently.
“I'll let the doctor know.””
But as she reached the door, Maya spoke.
“Miss Olivia?””
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“Did someone come into my room yesterday while I was asleep?””
Olivia frowned.
“No. Why?””
Maya looked at me.
“Because someone moved my backpack.””
Olivia stopped.
“What do you mean?””
Maya pointed to the small bedside cabinet.
“The picture was facing the other way.””
Olivia looked at me.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
I had left the photograph on that cabinet.
Face up.
Now it was face down.
And there was something underneath it.
A folded hospital discharge form.
My name was printed at the top.
But I hadn't signed it.

At the bottom, someone had written:
*Authorized pickup: Vanessa Carter.*
