Chapter 6: The Man Who Signed My Wife's Death Report

I ran out of the storage unit.

Thomas followed me.

Michael was already calling the police.

"Daniel, wait!"" he shouted.

But I was already moving.

The facility's front entrance was less than a hundred feet away.

Through the glass doors, I saw a black SUV parked outside.

Vanessa stood beside it.

She was speaking to a man in a dark coat.

I recognized him from the list.

Detective Robert Harlan.

The detective who had investigated Rachel's death.

The man who had told me there was no evidence of foul play.

The man who had looked me in the eyes at the funeral and said, "Sometimes terrible things happen without anyone being responsible.""

Now he was standing beside Vanessa.

Holding the same manila envelope Gregory had carried at the hospital.

"Daniel!"" Michael shouted behind me.

I stopped before reaching the exit.

Something felt wrong.

Why would a police detective be at a storage facility with Vanessa?

Why would he come here personally?

I pulled out my phone and began recording.

Then I stepped outside.

Vanessa turned.

Her face brightened.

"Daniel! Thank goodness.""

I didn't answer.

Detective Harlan looked at me.

"Mr. Carter.""

"Detective.""

He glanced at my phone.

"Put that away.""

"Why?""

"Because this is a private matter.""

I laughed bitterly.

"My wife died. My daughter was threatened. Someone forged my signature. And you're telling me this is private?""

Vanessa stepped between us.

"Daniel, please. You're upsetting everyone.""

"Stop saying my name like you care about me.""

Her expression hardened.

She looked toward the storage building.

"Did you open the trunk?""

I said nothing.

She exhaled sharply.

"You had no right.""

I stared at her.

"It's my wife's property.""

"Rachel left those documents to me.""

"Really?""

I pulled the trust agreement from my folder.

"Then why did she write my name on the envelope?""

Vanessa's face lost its color.

Detective Harlan stepped forward.

"Give me the documents, Mr. Carter.""

I moved backward.

"On what grounds?""

"Evidence in an ongoing investigation.""

"What investigation?""

He looked at Vanessa.

She gave him a tiny nod.

Then he said, "The death of Rachel Carter.""

For the first time, I understood.

He wasn't there to protect me.

He was there to protect her.

Thomas came outside and stood beside me.

Michael followed, holding his phone.

"I've contacted the regional police office," he said.

"They'll be sending independent investigators.""

Detective Harlan's jaw tightened.

"That was unnecessary.""

Michael held up the trust document.

"Perhaps. But these signatures suggest financial fraud, forgery, and possible witness tampering.""

Vanessa laughed.

"You're all making ridiculous accusations.""

I looked at her.

"Why did you try to take Maya?""

She folded her arms.

"I was trying to protect her.""

"From what?""

"From you!""

Her voice rose.

"You've always been unstable, Daniel. Rachel knew that. She told me you couldn't handle raising Maya alone.""

I stepped closer.

"Rachel never said that.""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"She did. More than once.""

"Then why did she leave Maya with me?""

Vanessa looked away.

For a moment, she had no answer.

Then Detective Harlan interrupted.

"This conversation is over. Mr. Carter, hand over the documents.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

He reached toward my folder.

Thomas stepped between us.

"Don't touch him.""

Harlan looked at Thomas.

"Move.""

"No.""

The detective placed a hand on his belt.

Then a voice came from behind us.

"Detective Harlan, step away from the family.""

Two uniformed officers were approaching from the main gate.

A woman in plain clothes walked between them.

She was in her forties, with short brown hair and a serious expression.

"Sergeant Emily Brooks," she introduced herself.

"I've been assigned to review the original investigation into Rachel Carter's death.""

Harlan stiffened.

"Emily, this is a misunderstanding.""

"Then you'll have no problem explaining why you're meeting with a potential witness in an active financial investigation.""

Vanessa immediately stepped backward.

Sergeant Brooks looked at me.

"Mr. Carter, do you have evidence you'd like to submit?""

I handed her the copied trust agreement and the list of names.

She examined the first page.

Then her expression changed.

"Where did you get this?""

"From my wife's storage unit.""

She looked at the name beside the fourth payment.

Detective Robert Harlan.

Her eyes moved to him.

"Detective, would you care to explain this?""

Harlan said nothing.

Vanessa suddenly began crying.

Not quietly.

She covered her face and shook her shoulders.

"I can't believe this. Rachel would never have wanted any of this.""

I stared at her.

"You don't get to use my wife's name anymore.""

She lowered her hands.

Her eyes were dry.

Then she leaned toward me and whispered:

"You should have let the past stay buried.""

Sergeant Brooks heard her.

"Ms. Carter, step over here.""

Vanessa looked at the officers.

For the first time, she seemed genuinely trapped.

But before anyone could move, my phone vibrated.

A message from Thomas.

He was standing less than five feet away.

I looked at him.

He pointed toward the screen.

The message read:

*Daniel, check the hospital camera footage. The person who entered Maya's room last night wasn't Vanessa.*

My heart began pounding.

I opened the attachment.

It was a still image from the hospital corridor.

A figure wearing blue medical scrubs stood outside Maya's room at 2:17 a.m.

The face was partially hidden by a surgical mask.

But I recognized the shoes.

Black leather.

With a small silver buckle.

I had seen them before.

At Rachel's funeral.

On the man who had delivered her death certificate.

Dr. Samuel Pierce.

Rachel's physician.

The doctor who had signed the medical report declaring her death accidental.

I looked up at Sergeant Brooks.

"There's someone else.""

She stepped closer.

"Who?""

I showed her the photograph.

She stared at it.

Then she looked toward Detective Harlan.

His expression had changed.

He was no longer angry.

He looked terrified.

"Where did you get that?"" he demanded.

I held up my phone.

"From the hospital.""

Vanessa suddenly stopped crying.

"Daniel, don't.""

I turned toward her.

"Why?""

She shook her head.

"Because if you involve him, you won't understand what happens next.""

Sergeant Brooks immediately ordered the officers to separate Vanessa and Harlan.

But I couldn't stop staring at the photograph.

Because there was something else in it.

The figure in blue scrubs was holding a small white object.

A hospital identification bracelet.

I zoomed in.

The printed name was barely visible.

But I could make out the letters.

*SOPHIE CARTER.*

Rachel's niece.

The little girl who was supposed to share Maya's inheritance.

The little girl I hadn't seen in months.

I called Michael.

"Find Sophie's guardian. Now.""

He checked his phone.

Then his face went completely white.

"Daniel...""

"What?""

"Sophie's foster placement was changed yesterday.""

"To whom?""

He looked at the document in his hand.

Then he whispered:

"Vanessa Carter.""

I turned toward the SUV.

Vanessa was already being escorted away.

But she looked directly at me.

And smiled.

Because suddenly I understood something far worse than the money, the forged signatures, or even Rachel's death.

Vanessa hadn't been trying to steal Maya's inheritance.

May you like

She had been collecting both children.

And if she had already taken Sophie, Maya might be next.
