Chapter 4: The Truth Behind the Wedding Dress
The room became silent.
Not quiet.
Silent.
The kind of silence where every person inside knows something irreversible has just been said.
Daniel stared at Vanessa.
For several seconds, he didn’t blink.
“Remove her.””
Vanessa’s lips parted.
“No.””
“You said it.””
“I said I planned to—”
“To remove my daughter.””
“I meant temporarily.””
Daniel laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“Temporarily?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“No.””
His voice was low.
“Not until you answer one question.””
She stopped.
“Did you ever love Lily?””
The question hit harder than anger.
Vanessa looked away.
That was the answer.
Daniel’s face changed.
Not rage.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
Lily stood beside him, holding his hand tightly.
She had spent months wondering what she had done wrong.
Why Vanessa looked at her like she was an obstacle.
Why every family conversation somehow ended with Lily feeling smaller.
Now she knew.
It was never in her imagination.
Vanessa sighed.
“I tried.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You tried?””
“Yes.””
“That’s what you say about a difficult project.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I didn’t know how to be around her.””
“She’s a child.””
“I know.””
“Then why did you make her feel unwanted?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Because every time I looked at her…”
She stopped.
Daniel waited.
“Every time I looked at her, I saw everything I could never replace.””
Lily’s expression changed.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You.””
Lily frowned.
“Me?””
“No.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Your mother.””
The room went still.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Don’t.””
“I’m not blaming Claire.””
“Then don’t say her name like she’s the reason.””
Vanessa wiped a tear away.
“She wasn’t.””
“Then explain.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I met Daniel after Claire died.””
“I know.””
“But I didn’t understand what that meant.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“What did you think it meant?””
“I thought if I loved him enough, he would eventually move forward.””
“And?””
“He did.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Then what’s the problem?””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
“He moved forward with a part of her still beside him.””
Lily looked down.
Daniel immediately noticed.
He stepped between them.
“Don’t put this on her.””
“I’m not.””
“It sounds like you are.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. I’m putting it on myself.””
For a moment, Daniel almost believed her.
Almost.
Then he remembered the phone call.
The trust.
The plan.
The papers.
“You still haven’t explained the documents.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Daniel saw it.
The hesitation.
“Vanessa.””
She looked away.
“I was going to fix it.””
“Fix what?””
“The situation.””
“What situation?””
She looked at Lily.
“The trust.””
Daniel stepped back.
“Again.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“The trust was created for Lily.””
“Yes.””
“And because you are the trustee, you control it until she’s older.””
“Yes.””
“You don’t understand how much pressure that creates.””
Daniel stared.
“She’s twelve.””
“I know.””
“She lost her mother.””
“I know.””
“She has one parent left.””
“I know!””
Vanessa’s voice cracked.
The sudden emotion surprised everyone.
She pressed a hand against her face.
“I know.””
The anger disappeared.
For a moment, she looked exhausted.
“I know she’s a child.””
Daniel watched her carefully.
“Then why?””
Vanessa sat down.
“I found out Marcus was in trouble.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“Your brother.””
“What does Marcus have to do with this?””
“He came to me.””
“When?””
“Two months ago.””
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“What did he say?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“He said the company was failing.””
Daniel stared.
“Our company is fine.””
“That’s what he wanted you to believe.””
Lily looked between them.
“Who is Marcus?””
Daniel glanced at her.
“My brother.””
“The one from the family photos?””
“Yes.””
Vanessa continued.
“He said if things got worse, everything your father built would collapse.””
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“And he convinced you?””
“No.””
“Then why were you helping him?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because he threatened me.””
The room changed.
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“Marcus knew about my sister.””
“What about her?””
“She has medical problems.””
Daniel said nothing.
“He said if I didn’t cooperate, he would make sure she lost everything.””
Lily whispered:
“That’s horrible.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“Yes.””
For a moment, Lily saw the woman differently.
Not forgiven.
Not trusted.
But human.
Daniel noticed too.
But he did not let his guard down.
“What exactly did Marcus want?””
Vanessa looked toward the closed door.
“He wanted access to Lily’s trust.””
Daniel’s expression hardened again.
“And you agreed?””
“I looked for another way.””
“Did you tell me?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought I could handle it.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s not an answer.””
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“Because I was ashamed.””
“Of what?””
“Of needing help.””
Daniel looked away.
He understood that feeling.
But he couldn’t excuse what came next.
“So you decided to remove my daughter?””
Vanessa whispered:
“I thought if Lily stayed away temporarily, Marcus would stop.””
Daniel stared.
“And if he didn’t?””
Silence.
Vanessa had no answer.
Lily looked at her.
“You didn’t know if it would work.””
“No.””
“You were just willing to try.””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
More than a lie.
Daniel walked to the window.
Outside, the wedding guests were still waiting.
People were laughing.
Taking pictures.
Living in the version of the day they thought existed.
He watched them.
Then he looked back.
“Who is Marcus working with?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I do.””
“Why?””
“Because I found out too late that he wasn’t trying to save anything.””
Daniel turned.
“What was he trying to do?””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“Take everything.””
Before Daniel could answer, someone knocked.
The door opened slightly.
A security guard stepped inside.
“Mr. Brooks?””
Daniel turned.
“Yes?””
“We need you outside.””
“Why?””
The guard looked uncomfortable.
“There’s someone here asking for Lily.””
Daniel’s body immediately tensed.
“Who?””
The guard looked down at a piece of paper.
“A woman named Naomi Carter.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Daniel noticed.
“You know her.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
“She worked with Claire.””
Daniel went still.
“My wife?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“She was her attorney.””
Lily looked confused.
“Why would Mom’s attorney be here?””
Nobody answered.
The guard continued.
“She says she has something that belongs to Lily.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
Then at Lily.
“Stay here.””
Lily immediately shook her head.
“No.””
“Lily.””
“I’m coming.””
“This could be dangerous.””
“You said I’m your family.””
Daniel softened.
“Yes.””
“Then don’t leave me behind.””
That sentence stopped him.
Because it was exactly what Vanessa had tried to do.
Leave her behind.
Daniel nodded.
“Okay.””
They walked outside together.
The moment they reached the entrance, Daniel saw her.
A woman in a dark blue suit stood near the fountain.
She held a small envelope.
Naomi Carter.
She looked older than Lily remembered from photographs.
But her eyes were the same.
Serious.
Careful.
Like someone who had carried a secret for too long.
When Naomi saw Lily, her expression softened.
“Lily.””
Lily stepped closer.
“How do you know my name?””
Naomi looked at Daniel.
Then at Vanessa.
Her face changed.
“You finally know.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Know what?””
Naomi handed him the envelope.
“Everything your wife tried to hide.””
Vanessa immediately said:
“Daniel, don’t.””
Naomi looked at her.
“You don’t get to say that anymore.””
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
His late wife Claire.
Standing beside Vanessa.
His breathing stopped.
Because the photograph wasn’t recent.
It was dated three months before Daniel and Vanessa met.
Lily looked at it.
“Dad…”
Daniel turned the picture over.
There was writing on the back.
A message in Claire’s handwriting.
His hands started shaking.
He read it silently.
Then his face changed.
Lily noticed.
“What does it say?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
Then at Naomi.
Then back at the message.
And everyone saw the moment he realized the wedding had never been about a new beginning.
It had been planned before Vanessa ever walked down the aisle.
Daniel finally spoke.
“Why did Claire write your name?””
Vanessa went pale.
May you like
Because on the back of the photograph were only five words.
*Do not trust Vanessa Brooks.*
