Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Smile
The reception hall filled quickly.
Lily sat with Daniel’s aunt, Denise, while the wedding party took pictures.
Vanessa moved from table to table, touching shoulders, laughing at jokes, adjusting flowers, checking the placement of champagne bottles.
She looked perfect.
That was the point.
“Beautiful,” a bridesmaid told her.
Vanessa smiled.
“Thank you.””
Then she glanced across the room.
Lily was talking to Denise.
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
She walked over.
“Lily.””
“Yes?””
“Come with me.””
Denise looked up.
“She’s supposed to be with the wedding party.””
“I know.””
Vanessa leaned down.
“I need you to do something important.””
Lily followed her a few steps.
Vanessa stopped near an empty corridor.
“Your father has enough responsibilities today.””
Lily frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“You need to make things easier for him.””
“I am.””
“No, you’re not.””
The words came out sharper than Vanessa intended.
Lily blinked.
Vanessa took a breath.
“Sweetheart, you're old enough to understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That families change.””
“My family isn’t changing.””
Vanessa smiled without warmth.
“After today, it is.””
Lily stared at her.
Vanessa straightened.
“You need to leave after the ceremony.””
“Why?””
“Because I’ve arranged something.””
“Dad wouldn’t agree.””
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
“Your father doesn’t know everything.””
Lily felt her stomach twist.
“What did you arrange?””
Vanessa looked around to make sure nobody was listening.
“A school.””
Lily went pale.
“What?””
“A very good boarding school.””
“I’m not going anywhere.””
“You will.””
“No.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You don't get to decide.””
“I'll tell Dad.””
Vanessa grabbed Lily’s wrist.
Not hard enough to leave a mark.
Hard enough to frighten her.
“You are going to ruin this wedding.””
Lily pulled away.
“You’re the one ruining it.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You sound just like your mother.””
The second the words left her mouth, Vanessa froze.
Lily stared.
“You knew my mom?””
Vanessa recovered.
“Everyone knew your mother.””
“No. You said it like you knew her.””
Vanessa turned away.
“We're done here.””
Lily followed her.
“Vanessa.””
Vanessa spun around.
“What?””
“How?””
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“Go back to your seat.””
Lily stood still.
Vanessa walked away.
But Lily didn't return to the reception.
She followed from a distance.
Vanessa entered a small conference room beside the ballroom.
The door didn't close completely.
Lily heard a man’s voice.
“You promised she'd be gone before the vows.””
Vanessa answered quietly.
“She will be.””
“And Daniel?””
“He'll sign everything after the ceremony.””
“What if he refuses?””
Vanessa laughed.
“He won't.””
Lily's breath caught.
A second voice spoke.
“And the trust?””
Lily didn’t recognize the man.
Vanessa replied:
“Once the guardianship changes, we control access to it.””
Lily covered her mouth.
She backed away.
Her heel touched a glass vase.
It tipped.
The vase fell.
Lily caught it just before it shattered.
But the sound still made Vanessa look up.
“Who’s there?””
Lily ran.
She reached the bathroom and locked herself inside.
Her hands shook as she pulled out her phone.
She opened Daniel’s contact.
She typed:
*Dad, something is wrong.*
Before she could hit send, another message appeared.
From an unknown number.
*You should have stayed quiet.*
Lily stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
*Your father doesn’t know what Vanessa really wants.*
May you like
A third message followed.
*I do.*
