Chapter 7: The Witness

Daniel moved Lily behind him.

Vanessa stepped into the study.

Her wedding gown brushed the doorway.

She looked different now.

Not glamorous.

Not warm.

Just exposed.

“You came here,” she said.

Daniel didn't answer.

Vanessa looked at Naomi.

“You.””

Naomi crossed her arms.

“Yes.””

Vanessa's eyes sharpened.

“You were supposed to stay out of this.””

Naomi laughed once.

“Not after what you did.””

Vanessa turned to Daniel.

“None of this is what it looks like.””

Daniel held up the forged petition.

“Then explain this.””

Vanessa glanced at it.

Her face barely moved.

“That’s a legal misunderstanding.””

“Your name is on the filing.””

“I didn’t file it.””

Naomi stepped forward.

“The digital submission came from your attorney.””

Vanessa snapped, “That proves nothing.””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“Why did you try to remove Lily?””

“I didn't.””

“You put her in a car.””

“Because she was upset.””

“You ordered security to remove her.””

Vanessa’s eyes flickered.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You told her she wasn't family anymore.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I was angry.””

“About what?””

“She hates me.””

Lily spoke from behind Daniel.

“I don't hate you.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Then why have you spent months trying to turn Daniel against me?””

Lily shook her head.

“I haven’t.””

“You've been telling him everything.””

“No.””

“You've made him choose between us.””

Daniel interrupted.

“Enough.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“I love you.””

Daniel didn't move.

“I thought you loved me too.””

“I did.””

“Then believe me.””

“I believed you.””

He looked at the forged document.

“That's the problem.””

Vanessa’s face crumpled for a moment.

Then she straightened.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“I was terrified.””

“Of what?””

“Of becoming irrelevant.””

Daniel frowned.

Vanessa continued.

“Claire was everywhere.””

“She’s dead.””

“I know.””

“Then why—”

“Because Lily carries her.””

Daniel stared.

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“Every room. Every photograph. Every sentence. You looked at that girl and saw Claire.””

Lily whispered, “That's not my fault.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“No.””

She took a shaky breath.

“It wasn't.””

Daniel asked, “Then why try to send her away?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Naomi did.

“Because sending Lily away wasn't the end goal.””

Daniel turned.

“What was?””

Naomi lifted her phone.

“I recorded a conversation.””

Vanessa went pale.

Daniel looked at the screen.

The audio began.

Vanessa's voice filled the room.

*“Once Daniel marries me, Lily becomes my responsibility. Once she’s gone, the trust becomes manageable.””*

Daniel closed his eyes.

Another voice spoke on the recording.

A man.

“Your husband can't know.””

Vanessa answered.

“He won't.””

Then the audio stopped.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Who was that man?””

Vanessa said nothing.

“Who?””

She stared at the floor.

Naomi whispered, “Daniel, there's more.””

She pressed play again.

The man’s voice returned.

“I'll handle the transfer.””

Vanessa replied:

“No. Claire already protected the account. We need Lily’s signature.””

Daniel stiffened.

“Lily’s signature?””

Naomi nodded.

“She couldn't access the trust without it.””

Lily looked frightened.

“I never signed anything.””

Daniel said, “I know.””

Vanessa whispered, “Not yet.””

Daniel’s head snapped toward her.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa backed away.

“No.””

“What does it mean?””

“I didn't do what you think.””

“You just admitted it.””

“I was trying to protect myself.””

“From what?””

She looked toward Lily.

Then toward Naomi.

Then back at Daniel.

Her voice broke.

“From the man who started this.””

The front door slammed downstairs.

A man's voice called out.

“Vanessa!””

Daniel froze.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

The color drained from her face.

May you like

The man called again.

And Daniel recognized the voice from the recording.
