Chapter 9: Claire’s Last Letter

The man entered without knocking.

He was in his late fifties, broad-shouldered, calm, carrying himself like someone who had never needed permission.

His name was Raymond Cole.

Daniel knew him.

Not well.

But enough.

“He was Claire’s financial investigator,” Naomi said.

Raymond placed the folder on the table.

“You've all made this much harder than it needed to be.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where is my daughter's money?””

Raymond looked at him.

“Safe.””

“Where?””

“In an account Claire created.””

Naomi shook her head.

“That account was closed.””

Raymond smiled.

“You were told it was closed.””

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside was a letter.

Claire’s handwriting.

His knees nearly weakened.

He knew every curve of those letters.

Every impatient slash through a lowercase t.

He began reading.

*Daniel,*

*If you're reading this, then the people I feared have found the door.*

His breath caught.

*I knew Marcus was in debt. I knew he would eventually ask for access to the trust.*

Daniel looked at Marcus.

Marcus closed his eyes.

*I also knew Vanessa was not who she said she was.*

Vanessa whispered, “No…”

Daniel kept reading.

*But Vanessa is not the mastermind.*

The room went silent.

Daniel looked up.

Vanessa was crying.

Claire’s letter continued.

*She came to me before she ever met Daniel. She begged for help.*

Daniel frowned.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never told you.””

Raymond said nothing.

*She told me someone was threatening her family. Someone who knew about Lily’s trust. Someone who wanted Vanessa to marry Daniel and gain access.*

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

She whispered, “Because they had my sister.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Vanessa nodded through tears.

“My younger sister.””

She looked at Lily.

“They threatened to hurt her if I walked away.””

Daniel stared.

“So the whole time…”

“I was trying to keep you safe.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You tried to send Lily away.””

“I thought it was the only way.””

“That's not protection.””

“I know.””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“I know now.””

Raymond finally spoke.

“Claire was trying to expose them.””

“Who?””

Raymond pointed toward Marcus.

“Your brother was only the easiest target.””

Marcus looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone encouraged your debt.””

Marcus stared.

“No.””

“They wanted you desperate.””

Raymond opened another file.

Emails.

Payments.

Anonymous transfers.

Everything had been coordinated.

Daniel recognized the company name.

A development firm.

The same company that had tried to buy the family property years earlier.

“Why?””

Raymond answered.

“Because Claire refused to sell.””

Daniel looked at the letter.

His voice was barely audible.

“What did she leave Lily?””

Raymond smiled sadly.

“The controlling interest.””

Daniel's eyes widened.

“The company?””

“Forty-nine percent.””

Marcus whispered, “That’s impossible.””

Claire had protected the family in a way Daniel had never understood.

Her final letter explained everything.

*Lily is not the weakness they think she is. She is the reason they cannot take the company.*

Daniel looked at his daughter.

She was crying quietly.

Raymond continued.

“The money Vanessa moved was never stolen.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“It was redirected.””

“To where?””

“Into a protected account Claire created for Lily.””

Naomi exhaled.

“So Vanessa knew.””

“I knew,” Vanessa whispered.

Daniel stared at her.

“Then why did you let me think it was gone?””

“Because they were watching me.””

“Who?””

Raymond's expression hardened.

“The same person who sent the emergency petition this morning.””

Daniel's phone buzzed.

A court notification.

He opened it.

The filing had been withdrawn.

Then another message appeared.

*Your daughter is safe. Your family is not.*

Daniel looked up.

“Raymond.””

The man nodded.

“They know.””

“Who?””

Raymond pushed one final photograph across the table.

It showed a corporate boardroom.

Several men were seated around a table.

At the center was a familiar face.

Someone Daniel trusted.

Someone who had attended the wedding rehearsal.

Someone who had hugged Lily yesterday.

Daniel stared at the photograph.

“No.””

Naomi looked over his shoulder.

Her face went white.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Because the man in the photograph was not Marcus.

Not Raymond.

Not anyone from Claire’s old legal team.

It was Daniel’s best friend.

The man who had been standing beside him all morning.

May you like

The man who was currently alone in the wedding venue.

Watching.
