Chapter 5: The Car Outside

Daniel ran.

He didn't explain.

He didn't ask permission.

He pushed through the ballroom doors so fast that two guests stepped aside.

Denise followed.

Security moved with them.

Outside, sunlight flashed across the marble entrance.

Lily stood near the curb.

She was crying.

Daniel dropped to his knees.

“Lily!””

She ran into his arms.

He held her so tightly she could barely breathe.

“Dad.””

“I’m here.””

“I didn’t go with them.””

“Who tried to take you?””

Lily pointed.

The black SUV was pulling away.

Daniel stood.

“Stop that car.””

Security ran toward the driveway.

One guard reached the vehicle before it cleared the gate.

The driver stepped out.

“Sir, I was told to take the girl home.””

“By who?””

“Mrs. Brooks.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Did she give you a destination?””

The driver hesitated.

“An address.””

“Where?””

He handed over a folded paper.

Daniel opened it.

A private residential facility outside the city.

Not his home.

Not any family address.

He looked at Lily.

“Were you ever told about this?””

She shook her head.

“They wanted me to sign something.””

Daniel crouched.

“What?””

“A paper saying I agreed to go.””

“Did you sign?””

“No.””

“Good.””

Lily reached into her purse.

“I found this.””

She handed him the silver key.

The one from his pocket.

Daniel stared at it.

“Where did you get this?””

“A woman gave it to me.””

“What woman?””

“Her name was Naomi.””

Denise stepped forward.

“Who is Naomi?””

Lily looked uncertain.

“She said she knew Mom.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Where is she?””

Lily pointed toward the parking lot.

“She left.””

Security checked the cameras.

One guard returned.

“Mr. Brooks.””

“Yes?””

“We found something.””

He showed Daniel a monitor on his phone.

A woman in a dark blazer approached Lily outside the side entrance.

She handed Lily a small envelope.

Then she walked away.

Daniel recognized her.

“Naomi Carter.””

Denise gasped.

“You know her?””

“She worked for Claire.””

Claire.

Lily’s mother.

Daniel had not heard that name connected to Naomi Carter in years.

The woman had been Claire’s estate attorney.

The last person to see Claire alive.

Daniel looked at the key.

“What did she tell you?””

Lily whispered, “She said my mom left something for me.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

“Lily.””

“She said the key would open it.””

Daniel looked at the wedding venue.

Then at the envelope.

Then at Vanessa, who was standing in the doorway watching them.

She had one hand pressed against her stomach.

Her face looked pale.

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Claire standing beside Naomi.

On the back was a handwritten message.

*Daniel, if you're reading this, Vanessa has finally shown you who she is.*

Daniel's breathing stopped.

He read the next line.

*Do not let her become Lily's guardian.*

He flipped the photograph over again.

There was more writing.

*The truth is in the house. The key opens the room you promised never to enter.*

Daniel stared at those words.

Claire had only made one such promise.

Years ago.

After her death.

Daniel had locked the old study and never opened it again.

Lily looked at him.

“Dad, what room?””

He stood slowly.

“The room where your mother kept her secrets.””

Behind him, Vanessa stepped outside.

“Daniel?””

He turned.

Her voice shook.

“What did that woman give you?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He folded the note and put it in his jacket.

Then he said four words that made Vanessa look terrified.

“We're going to the house.””
