Chapter 8: The Man at the Door

Marcus Brooks.

Daniel’s younger brother.

He stood in the foyer with a leather briefcase.

He had not been invited to the house.

He had not been invited to the wedding.

Daniel walked downstairs slowly.

Marcus looked up.

“Daniel.””

“What are you doing here?””

Marcus glanced at Vanessa.

“I came for the documents.””

Daniel stopped halfway down the stairs.

“What documents?””

Marcus sighed.

“This isn't how I wanted you to find out.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You should have thought about that before you forged my signature.””

Marcus stiffened.

“I didn't forge anything.””

Naomi stepped into view.

“We have the records.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Then you know I didn't act alone.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“Who else?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She whispered, “Marcus…”

He cut her off.

“Tell him.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus dropped the briefcase on the table.

“It was your father’s debt.””

Daniel stared.

“Our father has been dead for years.””

“The debt survived him.””

Marcus opened the briefcase.

Inside were loan agreements.

Property liens.

Bank statements.

Daniel scanned them.

His family business had been drowning quietly for years.

Marcus had borrowed against it.

Then borrowed again.

And again.

“How much?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

“How much?””

“Five point eight million.””

Lily gasped.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“And you knew?””

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

“Six months.””

Daniel looked back at Marcus.

“And Lily’s trust?””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“I wasn't trying to steal it.””

“Then what?””

“I needed a bridge loan.””

Daniel laughed without humor.

“You needed a child’s inheritance.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I thought I'd repay it.””

Naomi said, “You already used part of it.””

Daniel stared.

Marcus lowered his eyes.

Vanessa finally spoke.

“I found out after we got engaged.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew he was taking money from Lily.””

“I knew he was desperate.””

“And you still married into this?””

“I thought I could fix it.””

Daniel's voice was ice-cold.

“How?””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

“I thought if Lily lived somewhere else, the trust could be reorganized.””

“You thought.””

“Yes.””

“You thought you could erase my daughter from her own family.””

“No.””

“You told her she wouldn't be family anymore.””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I was trying to scare her into leaving.””

Lily stepped forward.

“Why me?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Because you were the only person who could stop everything.””

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Naomi answered.

“Lily has a beneficiary right that cannot be transferred after your death.””

Daniel stared.

“She becomes protected at eighteen.””

“Yes.””

“And Marcus needed access before then.””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at his brother.

“You used Vanessa.””

Marcus shook his head.

“She used me too.””

Vanessa snapped, “Don't.””

“You wanted Daniel dependent on you.””

“I wanted to save my family.””

“And I wanted to save mine!””

Marcus slammed his hand on the table.

Silence.

Then his face changed.

He looked toward Lily.

“I'm sorry.””

Lily said nothing.

Daniel moved between them.

“No more.””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“I can return what’s left.””

Daniel stared.

“What’s left?””

Marcus didn't answer.

Naomi's expression changed.

She reached for another document.

“Daniel.””

He took it.

There were account numbers.

Transfers.

Dates.

One final line.

*Remaining trust balance: $0.00*

Daniel felt the room tilt.

He looked at Marcus.

“You spent everything.””

Marcus whispered, “Not everything.””

“Then where is it?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa stared at the floor.

Daniel turned to her.

“You know.””

She said nothing.

Daniel’s voice rose.

“Where is Lily’s money?””

Vanessa finally whispered:

“It was moved.””

“To where?””

She shook her head.

“I can’t tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because the person who has it…”

She stopped.

A car horn sounded outside.

Naomi looked through the window.

Her face went pale.

Daniel followed her gaze.

A black sedan had stopped at the curb.

A man stepped out.

He wore a gray suit.

And he was holding a folder marked with Claire’s name.

May you like

Naomi whispered:

“That’s the man who met Claire before she died.””
