Chapter 4: What the Trust Meant
Daniel noticed Lily was missing.
He was halfway through a conversation with the wedding coordinator when he looked around and frowned.
“Where’s Lily?””
Denise immediately stood.
“She was with Vanessa.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“When?””
“About twenty minutes ago.””
He pulled out his phone.
No answer.
He called again.
Voicemail.
“Something’s wrong.””
Denise touched his arm.
“Daniel—”
“No.””
He started walking.
The conference room was empty.
A folder lay open on the table.
Daniel picked it up.
His eyes moved across the first page.
*Proposed Temporary Guardianship Arrangement.*
He read the next paragraph.
Then the next.
His face went still.
“Who signed this?””
Denise stepped closer.
“What is it?””
“Nothing that should exist.””
He flipped the page.
Vanessa’s signature was already at the bottom.
His wasn’t.
The next page contained a name.
*Lily Morgan.*
Daniel's chest tightened.
“What the hell…”
His phone rang.
It was his attorney.
“Marcus?””
“Daniel, where are you?””
“My wedding.””
There was a long pause.
“I saw a document come through this morning.””
Daniel looked at the papers.
“Is it about Lily?””
“Yes.””
“Who sent it?””
“Vanessa’s attorney.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Explain.””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Your late wife’s trust has a condition.””
Daniel knew.
“But I thought the condition was only about the property.””
“It is. Mostly.””
“Mostly?””
“The trust contains an independent inheritance for Lily.””
Daniel frowned.
“I know that.””
“No. You don't.””
Marcus took a breath.
“Lily becomes the sole beneficiary of the family estate at eighteen. Until then, you manage the assets as trustee.””
Daniel stared at the document.
“What does guardianship have to do with that?””
“Control.””
The word landed heavily.
“If someone successfully establishes a new legal guardian without your consent,” Marcus continued, “they can petition for control of certain financial decisions.””
Daniel slowly looked toward the ballroom.
“Vanessa.””
“I don’t know what she planned.””
“You know enough.””
“Daniel, don't sign anything today.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“I wasn’t planning to.””
Marcus added, “There’s something else.””
“What?””
“A sealed amendment was filed three days ago.””
“By whom?””
“Your first wife’s old attorney.””
Daniel froze.
“Why?””
“I don't know yet.””
“Find out.””
“I’m trying.””
Daniel ended the call.
Denise whispered, “Daniel, maybe you should stop the ceremony.””
He shook his head.
“Not yet.””
“Not yet?””
“I need Lily.””
He turned.
A security guard approached.
“Mr. Brooks?””
“Yes?””
“We found this near the east hallway.””
He handed Daniel a phone.
Daniel recognized it immediately.
“That's Lily's.””
“Where is she?””
“We don’t know.””
Daniel’s pulse spiked.
“Lock the side exits.””
Denise stared.
“Daniel?””
“No one leaves until I find my daughter.””
He opened Lily’s phone.
One message was still on the screen.
*I do.*
The unknown number had sent another.
*Ask Vanessa why she lied about knowing Lily’s mother.*
Daniel looked up.
Vanessa was across the ballroom, smiling for photographs.
She saw him.
She smiled wider.
Daniel slipped Lily’s phone into his pocket.
Then he walked toward his bride.
“Vanessa.””
She turned.
“There you are.””
“We need to talk.””
Her smile faltered.
“Now?””
“Yes.””
She glanced at the guests.
“Not here.””
Daniel leaned closer.
“Then tell me where Lily is.””
For the first time all morning, Vanessa looked genuinely surprised.
“I thought she was with you.””
Daniel stared at her.
“That answer better be true.””
Before Vanessa could respond, the wedding coordinator rushed over.
“Daniel, we're ready.””
Vanessa exhaled.
“See? It's time.””
Daniel looked at her.
Then at the ballroom doors.
Then at the empty place where Lily was supposed to stand.
And his phone buzzed.
A photo had arrived.
It showed Lily.
Alone.

Standing outside the venue.
And behind her was the black SUV Vanessa had supposedly sent to pick up an elderly relative.
