Chapter 6: The Locked Study
The old house had been silent for nearly three years.
Daniel rarely came there.
Too many memories.
Too many things that still smelled like Claire.
He stood in the upstairs hallway with Lily behind him.
The door to the study was covered in dust.
He put the silver key into the lock.
It clicked.
Lily whispered, “Mom had a secret room?””
“No.””
Daniel opened the door.
“She had a secret life.””
The room smelled like old paper and cedar.
Boxes lined the walls.
A desk sat beneath the window.
Photos covered one side.
Lily stepped inside.
She saw her mother everywhere.
At the beach.
At Christmas.
At Lily’s fifth birthday.
At the hospital.
Daniel walked to the desk.
A small wooden box sat in the center.
He opened it.
Inside was a letter.
*Daniel,*
His hand trembled.
He read aloud.
“‘If something happens to me, don't trust anyone who tries to separate Lily from you.’”
Lily looked up.
“Mom knew?””
Daniel kept reading.
“‘Especially not someone who claims they are doing it for Lily's safety.’”
A floorboard creaked.
Daniel turned sharply.
“Who’s there?””
No answer.
He grabbed a heavy lamp.
Lily stood behind him.
The door moved.
Then Naomi entered.
Daniel lowered the lamp but didn't put it down.
“You.””
Naomi nodded.
“I needed to know you were ready to hear this.””
Daniel's voice was hard.
“Start talking.””
Naomi looked at Lily.
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
“What did Vanessa do?”” Daniel asked.
Naomi didn't answer immediately.
“She didn't start this.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“Then who did?””
Naomi walked to the desk.
“Claire discovered Vanessa was connected to someone investigating the family trust.””
“Connected how?””
“She was gathering information.””
“Why?””
Naomi took a breath.
“Because Claire suspected someone wanted Lily’s inheritance.””
Lily spoke softly.
“My inheritance?””
“Yes.””
Naomi looked at her.
“Your mother discovered that a trustee account had been accessed without authorization.””
Daniel stared.
“By Vanessa?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
Naomi looked directly at Daniel.
“You.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“She used your credentials.””
His face tightened.
“That’s impossible.””
“Not if she had access to your office.””
Daniel stepped toward her.
“Are you telling me Vanessa stole from Lily?””
“I’m telling you someone did. And Vanessa helped cover it.””
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Why would she?””
Naomi’s expression softened.
“Because she wanted Daniel to believe Lily was becoming a financial burden.””
Daniel remembered small things.
Vanessa questioning school expenses.
Complaining about tutors.
Calling Lily’s medical bills excessive.
Suggesting boarding school.
He had thought they were disagreements.
Now they looked like preparation.
Daniel turned toward the boxes.
“Where’s the proof?””
Naomi pointed to the wall.
“Third shelf.””
Daniel pulled out a black binder.
Inside were bank statements.
Emails.
Copies of signatures.
Photographs.
And one document that made Daniel's stomach turn.
A draft marriage agreement.
Not theirs.
An earlier version.
It contained a clause requiring Daniel to appoint Vanessa as financial manager for Lily’s trust.
Daniel stared.
“She put this in front of me.””
“You refused.””
“Because I never saw it.””
Naomi shook her head.
“You did.””
Daniel looked confused.
“No.””
“She gave you a shortened version.””
He scanned the pages.
Naomi continued.
“She removed the clause before you signed.””
Daniel's face went white.
“She wanted me to sign something else later.””
“Yes.””
Lily stepped closer.
“Dad?””
Daniel turned.
She held another paper.
“This has my name.””
Daniel took it.
It was a guardianship petition.
The signature at the bottom was forged.
His.
Daniel looked up.
“Vanessa.””
Naomi nodded.
“Tomorrow morning, she planned to file it.””
“Tomorrow?””
“She needed the wedding first.””
Daniel understood.
The wedding gave her leverage.
A public marriage.
A new household.
A legal narrative.
Lily would become the obstacle.
He looked at his daughter.
She was trying to be brave.
He knelt.
“No one is taking you anywhere.””
Lily wrapped her arms around him.
Naomi watched quietly.
Then her phone rang.
She answered.
Her face changed.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“The courthouse accepted the emergency filing.””
His blood ran cold.
“When?””
“Twenty-three minutes ago.””
Daniel checked the time.
The wedding ceremony was supposed to begin in less than fifteen minutes.
He looked toward the door.
Vanessa was no longer there.
Naomi spoke carefully.
“She filed it under one condition.””
Daniel stared.
“What condition?””
Naomi swallowed.
“She claims you're mentally incapable of making decisions because of grief over Claire.””
Silence.
Then Daniel heard footsteps downstairs.
Someone was entering the house.
May you like
And Vanessa’s voice floated up the staircase.
“Daniel?””
