Chapter 10: The Truth Claire Left Behind
Daniel read the message three times.
Each time, the words became heavier.
*Don’t go to the hospital alone. The killer is already waiting for you.*
For six months, Daniel had searched for answers.
Now, standing in the house where he once built a family, he finally had them.
And somehow, the truth felt more terrifying than the lies.
Officer Bennett looked at the screen.
“Who sent that?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“But someone does know what’s happening.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You said Adrian woke up.””
Ethan nodded.
“And he asked for me.””
“No.””
Daniel looked toward the door.
“He asked for me.””
Everyone became silent.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, don’t go.””
He looked at her.
The words surprised him.
After everything.
After the lies.
After the secrets.
She was telling him not to go.
“Why?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because Claire was right.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“She knew someone would come after anyone who found the truth.””
Daniel stared.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
A tear slipped down Vanessa’s cheek.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked away.
“Of losing everything.””
The answer hurt more than anger would have.
Because Daniel finally understood.
Vanessa had not been a simple villain.
She had been something worse.
Someone who knew the truth.
Someone who had the chance to do the right thing.
And chose herself.
Officer Bennett interrupted.
“We’re not making decisions based on fear.””
He looked at Daniel.
“If Adrian Cole knows something, we need to hear it.””
Daniel nodded.
“I’m going.””
Emily immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Emily—”
“You’re walking into a trap.””
“I know.””
“That’s exactly why you shouldn’t.””
Daniel looked toward Olivia and Sophie.
His daughters were watching him.
Waiting.
Six months ago, he would have left them because someone told him it was necessary.
Never again.
“I’m not going alone.””
He looked at Officer Bennett.
“I’m taking protection.””
The officer nodded.
“Good.””
Then Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“You’re coming too.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa stared.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“Because Claire said not to punish the wrong person.””
Vanessa looked down.
“And you think I’m the wrong person?””
Daniel paused.
“I think you’re someone who knows more than she admitted.””
She nodded slowly.
“That’s fair.””
Two hours later, Daniel stood outside the hospital.
The same hospital where Claire died.
The same hallway where Vanessa had walked into Claire’s room.
The same place where everything began.
Daniel’s hands shook slightly.
Officer Bennett noticed.
“You okay?””
Daniel looked at the building.
“No.””
The officer nodded.
“Good answer.””
Daniel glanced at him.
“What?””
“People who say they’re fine before walking into something like this usually aren’t thinking clearly.””
Daniel almost smiled.
Then the doors opened.
Inside, everything smelled the same.
Clean floors.
Cold air.
The faint sound of machines.
The memories came back immediately.
Claire laughing weakly.
Claire squeezing his hand.
Claire saying she was tired.
Daniel stopped.
For a second, he was there again.
The night he lost her.
Then Vanessa spoke quietly.
“Daniel.””
He looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
He said nothing.
“I know that doesn’t fix anything.””
“No.””
“I know.””
They walked in silence.
Finally, they reached Adrian’s room.
A nurse stood outside.
“Mr. Cole is awake.””
Daniel nodded.
The nurse opened the door.
Adrian Cole looked nothing like the man in the photograph.
He was thinner.
Paler.
Older.
Like six months had passed for him too.
His eyes moved toward Daniel.
And immediately filled with tears.
“Daniel.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You know me?””
Adrian nodded.
“Claire talked about you every day.””
Daniel looked away.
The words hurt.
“Tell me what happened.””
Adrian tried to sit up.
The nurse helped him.
“I don’t have much time.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian looked toward the door.
“Because whoever did this knows I woke up.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who?””
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Daniel.
“Before I answer, you need to understand something.””
Daniel waited.
“Claire wasn’t investigating because she thought someone wanted to hurt her.””
A pause.
“She was investigating because someone wanted to hurt your family.””
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“My family?””
Adrian nodded.
“The medication issue was only the beginning.””
“What else?””
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“She found financial records.””
Daniel went still.
“The account.””
Adrian nodded.
“Claire discovered someone had been moving money from a charity account connected to the hospital.””
Officer Bennett stepped forward.
“Who?””
Adrian looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel frowned.
“You don’t know?””
Adrian shook his head.
“But Claire did.””
The room became silent.
“Who was it?””
Adrian looked at Daniel.
“Someone you would never suspect.””
Daniel felt cold.
“Who?””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Your father.””
Daniel stopped breathing.
“My father is dead.””
“I know.””
“Then what are you saying?””
Adrian looked at him.
“Your father wasn’t the person moving the money.””
A pause.
“He was covering for someone.””
Daniel’s mind raced.
“My father?””
“He found out.””
“About what?””
“That Claire was investigating.””
Daniel stared.
“Why would he hide it?””
Adrian looked toward Vanessa.
“Because he was protecting his family.””
Daniel turned.
“Vanessa?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Adrian continued.
“Claire discovered your father had been receiving threats.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“She was trying to protect him too.””
Daniel looked down.
Another secret.
Another person trying to carry everything alone.
“Who was threatening him?””
Adrian hesitated.
Then:
“The person who poisoned Claire.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Name.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Claire never found the name.””
Daniel’s face fell.
“But you know.””
Adrian nodded.
“I know who had access.””
“Who?””
Adrian’s voice became barely audible.
“The person who signed Claire’s final prescription.””
Daniel felt his heartbeat slow.
“No.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Yes.””
Daniel whispered:
“Who?””
Adrian said the name.
And the entire room changed.
“Emily Hayes.””
Daniel turned.
Emily was standing in the doorway.
Everyone froze.
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
Emily’s face was filled with tears.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
She stepped forward.
“Please listen.””
Officer Bennett immediately moved.
“Mrs. Hayes, stay where you are.””
Emily looked at him.
“I didn’t kill my sister.””
Daniel stared.
“Then why?””
Her tears fell.
“Because Claire asked me to.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel felt broken.
“What?””
Emily looked at Vanessa.
Then at Adrian.
Then finally at Daniel.
“Claire knew she was going to die.””
Daniel shook his head.
“She knew.””
“She knew someone was poisoning her.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Emily cried.
“Because she knew you would go after them.””
Daniel remembered Claire’s words.
Protecting him.
Always protecting him.
Emily continued:
“She asked me to help her find proof.””
Daniel stared.
“You helped her.””
“Yes.””
“Then why hide?””
Emily closed her eyes.
“Because after Claire died, I found out someone had accessed her files.””
“Who?””
Emily looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Daniel.
“Someone close to you.””
Daniel waited.
“Who?””
Emily whispered:
“The person who knew everything.””
A silence.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
Vanessa stared at Emily.
“You knew.””
Emily’s face changed.
“What?””
“You knew before me.””
Daniel turned.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I wasn’t the first person Claire warned.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“Who was?””
Vanessa looked at Emily.
“Her sister.””
Emily started crying.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“No,” Vanessa said.
“You were trying to protect the person who did it.””
Daniel looked between them.
The truth finally broke open.
Emily shook her head.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at Daniel.
“I didn’t poison Claire.””
“Then who?””
Emily whispered:
“The person who had access to everything.””
A pause.
“The person Claire trusted.””
Daniel waited.
Then Emily said:
“It was your father’s business partner.””
Daniel froze.
“Richard?””
Emily nodded.
The man who had handled the family accounts.
The man who attended Claire’s funeral.
The man who told Daniel everything would be okay.
The man nobody had questioned.
Officer Bennett immediately grabbed his radio.
“Find Richard Hayes.””
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
He answered.
A voice spoke.
Older.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Daniel.””
His blood went cold.
“Richard?””
A pause.
Then:
“You finally figured it out.””
Daniel gripped the phone.
“You killed Claire.””
Richard laughed softly.
“No.””
A pause.
“I saved myself.””
Daniel felt sick.
“Where are you?””
Another pause.
Then Richard said:
“Where this all started.””
The line went silent.
Daniel looked at the others.
“Where?””
Then he remembered.
The old family house.
The hidden account.
The basement.
The place where Claire left the truth.
But before anyone could move, a final message appeared on Daniel’s phone.
From Richard.
A photo.
A live photo.
Of Olivia and Sophie.
Standing beside him.
Daniel stopped breathing.
The caption underneath said:
*Come alone if you want your daughters back.*
And for the first time since the wedding began…
May you like
Daniel wasn’t searching for the truth.
He was racing against time.
