Chapter 8: The Person Behind the Door

The footsteps stopped.

One step above them.

Then another.

Slow.

Careful.

Whoever was walking through the house wasn’t searching.

They already knew where they were going.

Daniel stood frozen at the bottom of the basement stairs.

The old wooden steps creaked under the weight of the approaching person.

Officer Bennett immediately reached for his radio.

“Everyone stay back.””

Daniel looked toward Vanessa.

For the first time since the wedding began, she looked genuinely terrified.

Not guilty.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

“Who is it?”” Daniel whispered.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel almost laughed.

But he stopped.

Because this time, he believed her.

The footsteps continued.

Closer.

Closer.

Then the basement door opened.

A shadow appeared at the top of the stairs.

Daniel’s body tensed.

“Show yourself.””

The person stepped into the light.

And Daniel’s heart dropped.

“Marcus?””

His best friend stood there.

The same man who had spoken in the ballroom.

The same man who had defended him.

The same man who had revealed Vanessa’s questions about his finances.

Marcus looked exhausted.

His clothes were wrinkled.

His face pale.

“Daniel.””

Daniel stared.

“What are you doing here?””

Marcus looked around the basement.

At the open box.

At the papers.

At the flash drive.

Then back at Daniel.

“I was too late.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Too late for what?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Officer Bennett stepped forward.

“Mr. Cole?””

Marcus looked confused.

“What?””

The officer studied him.

“You’re not Adrian Cole.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Then slowly shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

“Then who are you?””

Marcus took a breath.

“My real name is Ethan Cole.””

Silence.

Nobody moved.

Daniel stared.

“Ethan?””

He shook his head.

“I don’t understand.””

Ethan looked at the photograph in Daniel’s hand.

The one showing Claire beside Adrian.

“That’s my brother.””

Daniel looked down.

“The doctor?””

Ethan nodded.

“Adrian.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Where is he?””

Ethan looked at her.

“You still don’t know?””

Vanessa froze.

Daniel noticed.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan looked between them.

“Adrian disappeared six months ago.””

Daniel frowned.

“But he just called me.””

“No.””

Ethan shook his head.

“That wasn’t Adrian.””

Daniel felt cold.

“What?””

Ethan pointed toward the phone.

“The messages. The calls. Someone has been using Adrian’s information.””

Officer Bennett narrowed his eyes.

“Why?””

Ethan looked at the open box.

“Because Claire left something behind.””

Daniel looked at the flash drive.

“The files.””

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel picked it up.

“What’s on this?””

Ethan didn’t answer immediately.

That scared Daniel more than anything.

“Tell me.””

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

Then away.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Claire was right.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stepped closer.

“About what?””

Ethan’s face tightened.

“About who was responsible.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Ethan.””

Everyone looked at her.

“You know him?””

She closed her eyes.

“I knew Adrian.””

Daniel stared.

“You knew both brothers?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“But not like you think.””

Daniel’s patience disappeared.

“Then explain.””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Adrian treated Claire.””

“And Ethan?””

“He helped him.””

Ethan gave a bitter smile.

“Helped him lose everything.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan looked toward the stairs.

“I shouldn’t be here.””

Daniel stepped in front of him.

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“You walked into this house after breaking into a basement where my wife hid evidence.””

Ethan stopped.

“You’re going to explain.””

Ethan looked at Daniel.

Then nodded.

“Fine.””

He walked down the stairs.

“When Claire started investigating the medication problem, Adrian helped her.””

Daniel listened carefully.

“But someone found out.””

“Who?””

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

Daniel noticed.

Again.

That reaction.

“Vanessa?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Ethan continued.

“Claire discovered the supplier wasn’t the only problem.””

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“What else?””

“There were falsified records.””

“From where?””

“The hospital.””

Officer Bennett frowned.

“Are you saying someone inside the hospital altered medical records?””

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at the doctor’s letter.

The one saying Claire had been poisoned.

“Who?””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“That’s the part Claire was trying to prove.””

“Why?””

“Because the person changing records had access to everything.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Who?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then:

“Someone close to the patients.””

The answer was too vague.

Daniel’s anger returned.

“You’re doing the same thing everyone else has done.””

Ethan looked at him.

“What?””

“Giving me pieces.””

Daniel held up the letter.

“My wife died. My daughters disappeared. My life was destroyed.””

His voice broke.

“I don’t need more mysteries.””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

He reached into his jacket.

Pulled out a small envelope.

And handed it to Daniel.

“Claire gave this to me three days before she died.””

Daniel stared.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

Ethan looked away.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That if I gave it to you, you would go after the wrong person.””

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

Claire’s handwriting.

His heart broke just seeing it.

*Daniel, if you found this, it means I was right.*

He read slowly.

*There is someone around us who knows everything about our lives. Someone who knows our schedules, our finances, our weaknesses.*

Daniel swallowed.

The next line made him stop.

*The person I trusted most may be the person I should have feared.*

His eyes lifted.

Vanessa.

Emily.

Marcus.

Everyone.

Everyone had become a question.

He kept reading.

*But Daniel, don’t make the mistake of thinking the person who hurts you is always the person closest to you. Sometimes they hide behind the person you trust.*

Daniel looked up.

“What does this mean?””

Ethan’s voice was quiet.

“It means Claire knew someone was using Vanessa.””

Vanessa looked shocked.

“Using me?””

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel stared.

“Who?””

Before Ethan could answer, the basement lights went out.

The room fell into darkness.

A scream came from upstairs.

Olivia.

Daniel moved instantly.

“Girls!””

He ran toward the stairs.

Officer Bennett followed.

The basement door slammed shut.

Someone had locked it.

Daniel pulled the handle.

Nothing.

“Open it!””

No answer.

Then a sound came from above.

A crash.

Glass breaking.

Daniel’s heart stopped.

“Olivia!””

He slammed his shoulder into the door.

Once.

Twice.

On the third hit, it broke open.

He ran upstairs.

The living room was empty.

The front door was open.

Cold air rushed inside.

Emily was standing near the hallway, holding Sophie.

But Olivia was gone.

Daniel stopped breathing.

“Where is she?””

Emily’s face was filled with panic.

“She was right here.””

“Where is Olivia?””

No one answered.

Then Daniel saw something on the floor.

A small piece of paper.

His hands shook as he picked it up.

Only four words.

*She knows the truth.*

Daniel looked at Emily.

Then Vanessa.

Then Ethan.

“Who took my daughter?””

Nobody spoke.

Until Vanessa whispered:

“Oh my God.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at the note.

Her face went white.

“Because I know who wrote it.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked toward the open door.

May you like

And said the name nobody expected.

“Claire.””
