Chapter 3: The Story Vanessa Prepared

The police officer’s arrival changed the atmosphere of the ballroom instantly.

A few minutes earlier, Daniel had been surrounded by flowers, champagne glasses, and people smiling for photographs.

Now, the same room felt like an interrogation chamber.

The officer looked between Daniel, Vanessa, and the two girls holding onto their father.

“Mr. Hayes,” Officer Bennett said calmly, “I need you to answer a few questions.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“About what?””

The officer glanced down at the tablet in his hand.

“About the disappearance of Olivia and Sophie Hayes.””

Daniel felt Olivia’s fingers tighten around his.

“They weren’t missing.””

The officer looked up.

“Excuse me?””

“They were taken to Portugal.””

A strange silence followed.

“By who?”” Officer Bennett asked.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

The answer was obvious.

But saying it out loud made it real.

“By her.””

Every head turned.

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“That is not true.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You told me their aunt was taking care of them.””

“I was trying to help.””

“You told me they were safe.””

“They were supposed to be.””

Officer Bennett raised a hand.

“Everyone needs to slow down.””

Daniel looked at him.

“My daughters showed up at my wedding barefoot after six months of no contact.””

The officer’s expression changed slightly.

He looked at Olivia and Sophie.

“Girls, can you tell me what happened?””

Both children became silent.

Daniel noticed.

Their courage disappeared.

The ballroom was too big.

Too many strangers.

Too many eyes.

He crouched beside them.

“It’s okay.””

Olivia looked at him.

“Do we have to go away again?””

The question broke him.

“No.””

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“Never.””

Sophie stared at him.

“But Vanessa said…”

Daniel looked up.

“What did Vanessa say?””

Sophie’s lips trembled.

“She said you didn’t want us anymore.””

The room went completely quiet.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Daniel stood.

“No.””

His voice was calm now.

Almost frighteningly calm.

“You don’t get to call them ridiculous.””

Vanessa looked at Officer Bennett.

“Officer, you need to understand what’s happening here. Daniel is grieving. He’s overwhelmed. These girls have been through a traumatic experience, and they’re repeating things they’ve heard.””

Daniel felt something inside him snap.

“Things they’ve heard?””

He stepped closer.

“They heard their mother’s warning.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But Daniel caught it.

Officer Bennett noticed too.

“Mrs. Reed,” he said, “did you know Claire Hayes left a letter?””

Vanessa froze.

“No.””

Daniel held up the page.

“You’re lying.””

Her eyes moved toward him.

“Daniel—”

“You knew.””

“No.””

“You knew before I opened it.””

Vanessa looked around the room.

She realized everyone was watching.

She lowered her voice.

“Can we please talk privately?””

Daniel almost laughed.

“Privately?””

He looked at the guests.

“You spent months making decisions about my children privately.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.””

“Then tell me.””

Daniel held the letter.

“Tell me what Claire was afraid of.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked angry.

Not scared.

Angry.

“She was paranoid.””

The words landed like a slap.

Daniel stared.

“You’re talking about my wife.””

“Yes.””

Vanessa’s voice sharpened.

“And you need to hear the truth about her.””

Daniel said nothing.

Vanessa took that as permission.

“Claire was not as honest as you think.””

Olivia covered her ears.

“Stop talking about Mommy.””

Daniel immediately moved in front of them.

“Enough.””

Officer Bennett stepped between them.

“Mrs. Reed, I need you to explain your involvement.””

Vanessa looked at the officer.

“My involvement?””

“Yes.””

“With what?””

“The children’s travel.””

Vanessa gave a small, bitter smile.

“I arranged transportation because Daniel was incapable of handling it.””

Daniel stared.

There it was.

The story.

The one she had prepared.

“I was helping a grieving father.””

She turned toward the guests.

“You all saw him after Claire died.””

Some people looked uncomfortable.

Because they had.

They had seen Daniel struggle.

They had seen him lose weight.

They had seen him cancel meetings and disappear from social events.

Vanessa continued.

“He couldn’t get out of bed some mornings. He forgot appointments. He forgot meals.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“And?””

“And I stepped in.””

She looked at the officer.

“I made sure the girls were somewhere safe.””

Officer Bennett looked at Daniel.

“Is any of this accurate?””

Daniel hesitated.

Because the worst part was that pieces of it were.

“Yes,” he admitted.

The guests murmured.

“I was grieving.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Exactly.””

Daniel looked at her.

“But I never asked you to take my children away.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Officer Bennett turned back to her.

“Where exactly were the girls supposed to be staying?””

Vanessa paused.

“With their aunt.””

“What is the aunt’s name?””

Another pause.

Too long.

Daniel noticed.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“You don’t know.””

Her face tightened.

“Of course I know.””

“Then say it.””

The room waited.

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Officer Bennett looked down at his tablet.

“Mrs. Reed, we have a problem.””

Everyone turned.

“What problem?”” Vanessa asked.

The officer showed her the screen.

“We contacted the Portuguese authorities.””

Daniel’s heart pounded.

“And?””

“They have no record of Olivia and Sophie Hayes staying with any family member.””

Vanessa went completely still.

Daniel stared.

“No.””

Officer Bennett continued.

“They also have no record of the address you provided.””

Vanessa’s lips parted.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel felt cold.

“You gave me a fake address?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I didn’t.””

“Then explain.””

She couldn’t.

For several seconds, the only sound in the ballroom was Sophie quietly crying.

Daniel pulled her closer.

Vanessa looked at the girls.

Then at Daniel.

Something desperate appeared in her eyes.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

He didn’t move.

“I can explain everything.””

“You’ve had six months.””

Her voice softened.

“I did it because I loved you.””

Daniel stared at her.

The words sounded impossible.

“You abandoned my children because you loved me?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

Vanessa looked around.

The guests.

The officer.

The girls.

Then she whispered:

“Because Claire was going to leave you.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Vanessa took a step forward.

“She was planning to take the girls and disappear.””

A wave of shock moved through the room.

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“She was.””

“You’re lying.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I found documents.””

“What documents?””

“Divorce papers.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

“No.””

Vanessa nodded.

“She was unhappy. She had been talking to a lawyer.””

Daniel looked at the letter in his hand.

At Claire’s handwriting.

At the warning she left behind.

His mind struggled to connect the two versions of the woman he loved.

The wife who wrote:

*Do not trust Vanessa.*

And the wife Vanessa claimed wanted to leave him.

Then Officer Bennett spoke.

“Mr. Hayes.””

Daniel turned.

The officer’s expression was serious.

“We need to talk about another issue.””

“What?””

The officer looked down.

“Before the girls arrived, we received a report.””

Daniel frowned.

“A report about what?””

Officer Bennett hesitated.

Then he said:

“Someone reported that you had taken your daughters without permission.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

The officer looked at Vanessa.

“She filed the report twenty minutes before your wedding began.””

The entire room went silent.

Daniel slowly turned toward the woman he almost married.

Vanessa’s face was unreadable.

But her silence answered everything.

She hadn’t been running from the police.

She had called them first.

And she had already written the story.

A story where Daniel was the villain.

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

A new message appeared.

From an unknown number.

Only one sentence.

*Daniel, if Vanessa is accusing you, check the security footage from the night Claire died.*

His hands went cold.

Because beneath the message was a photo.

A photo taken six months ago.

The night Claire died.

And standing outside the hospital room door…

was Vanessa.
