Chapter 5: The Name on the Report

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not Daniel.

Not Vanessa.

Not even Officer Bennett.

The name hanging in the air belonged to a woman who had been gone for six months.

Claire Hayes.

Daniel felt like the ground beneath him had disappeared.

“My wife is dead,” he said quietly.

Officer Bennett nodded.

“I know.””

“Then how was a report filed under her name?””

The officer looked at his tablet.

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Her face had changed.

The confidence was gone.

The carefully controlled expression.

Gone.

Now she looked like someone watching a door close.

A door she needed to stay open.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“Did you use Claire’s name?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Daniel noticed.

“So you know exactly what I’m talking about?””

Vanessa’s lips parted.

Then closed.

Officer Bennett stepped forward.

“Mrs. Reed, we need you to answer clearly.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I didn’t file anything under Claire’s name.””

“Then who did?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel watched her.

Six months ago, he would have believed the fear in her voice.

Today, he couldn’t.

“Everything you don’t know somehow helps you.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

“You really think I did all of this?””

Daniel stared.

“I think you know more than you’ve told me.””

A voice came from the crowd.

“Daniel.””

Everyone turned.

It was Emily.

Claire’s sister.

She had entered the ballroom quietly while everyone was distracted.

Daniel froze.

“You came.””

Emily looked at Olivia and Sophie first.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Oh my God.””

The girls ran to her.

“Aunt Emily!””

She dropped to her knees and hugged them tightly.

“I’m sorry.””

Her voice broke.

“I’m so sorry.””

Olivia cried into her shoulder.

“We thought you forgot us.””

Emily pulled back immediately.

“Never.””

Daniel watched the reunion.

Then looked at Vanessa.

The woman who had spent months keeping everyone apart.

Emily stood and faced Vanessa.

“What did you tell him?””

Vanessa stiffened.

“Excuse me?””

“What lie did you tell Daniel about me?””

“I never lied.””

Emily laughed bitterly.

“You told him I abandoned them.””

Daniel turned.

“Wait.””

Emily looked at him.

“She told you that?””

Daniel felt sick.

“She said you wouldn’t answer.””

Emily shook her head.

“Because I never got a single call from him.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What?””

Emily pulled out her phone.

“I saved everything.””

She opened her messages.

“I called you thirty-seven times.””

Daniel stared.

“Thirty-seven?””

Emily nodded.

“And every time I called, it went straight to voicemail.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She said nothing.

“Why would my calls go to voicemail?””

Nobody answered.

Then Emily looked at Vanessa.

“Because someone blocked my number on his phone.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

The realization hit him slowly.

His phone.

His accounts.

His messages.

For months, Vanessa had been the person helping him manage everything.

“Did you block her?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Then who did?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The same answer.

Again.

Always the same answer.

He turned to Officer Bennett.

“Can you check?””

The officer nodded.

“We can request digital records.””

Vanessa’s voice became sharper.

“Are you serious?””

Everyone looked at her.

She immediately softened.

“I mean… Daniel, after everything we’ve been through, you’re going to accuse me based on a few coincidences?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Coincidences?””

“Yes.””

She pointed toward the letter.

“The photo. The report. The girls. You’re connecting things that aren’t connected.””

Daniel stared.

“Then help me understand.””

Vanessa remained silent.

“Why did you go into Claire’s hospital room?””

Her eyes moved away.

That was the answer.

Daniel felt it.

“Why?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Because Claire asked me to.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel blinked.

“She asked you?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The night she died.””

Daniel’s heart pounded.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because she made me promise.””

Daniel laughed once.

A hollow sound.

“My dying wife made you promise to hide something from me?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She didn’t trust you.””

The words were cruel.

Daniel felt them.

But before he could respond, Emily stepped forward.

“That’s impossible.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You weren’t there.””

“No.””

Emily’s voice was firm.

“But I knew my sister.””

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“Did you?””

Emily’s face tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Maybe everyone should know the truth.””

Daniel felt a warning inside him.

“Don’t.””

But Vanessa continued.

“Claire wasn’t just sick.””

Nobody spoke.

“She was scared.””

Daniel frowned.

“Of what?””

Vanessa looked directly at him.

“Of losing control.””

The room became tense.

“She knew she was dying. She knew she wouldn’t be there to raise the girls.””

Daniel swallowed.

“And?””

“And she made arrangements.””

“What arrangements?””

Vanessa took a breath.

“Legal arrangements.””

Daniel felt his hands go cold.

“What kind?””

Vanessa looked at Olivia and Sophie.

“She wanted someone else to have custody.””

The girls immediately looked at Daniel.

“No.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t know what was in those papers.””

“You do?””

Silence.

That was enough.

Daniel stared.

“You saw them.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Officer Bennett stepped closer.

“Mrs. Reed, did you have access to Claire Hayes’s personal documents?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“I helped with things after she got sick.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel felt anger rising.

“Where are the documents?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I don’t have them.””

“Then who does?””

Again, silence.

Suddenly Sophie spoke.

“Mom did.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked down.

“What?””

Sophie held the silver key.

“She said the papers were in the box.””

“What box?””

“The box under the floor.””

Daniel frowned.

Emily gasped.

“What?””

Olivia looked at her.

“Aunt Emily?””

Emily covered her mouth.

“No.””

Daniel turned.

“What is it?””

Emily looked terrified.

“Claire had a hiding place.””

Daniel stared.

“You knew?””

“I knew she kept important things somewhere.””

“Where?””

Emily hesitated.

“Your old house.””

The room went silent.

Daniel remembered.

The storage room.

The one Vanessa knew about.

The one Claire said he never used.

Emily continued.

“Claire told me if anything happened, only you were supposed to find it.””

Daniel looked at the key.

Then at Vanessa.

“You knew.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“You cleaned that house with me.””

“Yes.””

“You opened every room.””

“I was helping.””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“You knew exactly where to look.””

Vanessa stepped back.

For the first time, she looked afraid of him.

Not because he was angry.

Because he was getting close.

Officer Bennett spoke.

“We need to go to that house.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

He turned toward the exit.

Then stopped.

Because Vanessa spoke behind him.

“Daniel.””

He didn’t turn.

“If you open that box…”

Her voice shook.

“You’ll destroy everything you thought you knew about Claire.””

Daniel slowly looked back.

“What are you afraid I’ll find?””

Vanessa stared at him.

Then whispered:

“The reason she was really dying.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel’s face went pale.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at him.

And for the first time all night…

she sounded afraid.

“Daniel, Claire wasn’t sick because of a disease.””

A cold silence filled the ballroom.

“She was poisoned.””

Daniel couldn’t breathe.

The officer immediately stepped forward.

“Mrs. Reed, choose your next words carefully.””

But Vanessa wasn’t looking at the officer.

She was looking at Daniel.

“Ask yourself one question.””

Daniel stared.

“What question?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Who was the last person to bring Claire her medication?””

Daniel’s mind went blank.

Because he remembered.

The answer came instantly.

And it was someone he had never questioned.

Someone he trusted.

Someone who had stood beside him every day after Claire died.

Vanessa whispered:

“It wasn’t me.””

She looked at Emily.

May you like

Then at Daniel.

“It was her sister.””
