Chapter 4: The Footage She Never Wanted Found
Daniel stared at the photograph on his phone.
The ballroom around him disappeared.
The voices.
The whispers.
The sound of Olivia quietly crying into his jacket.
All of it faded beneath one impossible image.
Vanessa.
Standing outside Claire’s hospital room.
Six months earlier.
On the night Daniel watched his wife take her final breath.
His thumb hovered over the screen.
The picture was blurry, taken from a distance.
But there was no mistaking her.
Same dark hair.
Same coat.
Same silver bracelet she wore every day.
The bracelet Daniel had bought her for their first Christmas together.
His stomach turned.
“Daniel?””
Officer Bennett’s voice pulled him back.
He quickly locked the phone.
“Who sent that?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
And because a part of him was afraid to know.
Vanessa watched him carefully.
“What was that?””
Daniel looked at her.
For a moment, he saw the woman he thought he knew.
The woman who brought him coffee after sleepless nights.
The woman who sat beside him at Claire’s funeral.
The woman who held his daughters’ hands and promised she would protect them.
Then he saw the photograph again.
“You were at the hospital.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“I visited.””
Daniel’s heart sank.
“You never told me.””
“There was no reason to.””
“No reason?””
His voice rose.
“You were there the night my wife died.””
The guests exchanged shocked looks.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Daniel, this isn’t what you think.””
“That’s exactly what you said about everything else.””
She looked hurt.
“You don’t trust me anymore?””
Daniel almost laughed.
The question was so absurd it hurt.
“My daughters disappeared.””
Vanessa flinched.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“You lied about where they were.””
“I made a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
Daniel pointed toward Olivia and Sophie.
“They spent six months believing I didn’t want them.””
Vanessa looked away.
That was the first time Daniel knew.
Not suspected.
Not wondered.
Knew.
She regretted being caught.
Not what she did.
Officer Bennett stepped closer.
“Mr. Hayes, I need to see that image.””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he handed over the phone.
The officer studied the screen.
“Who sent this?””
“I don’t know.””
“Can you find out?””
Daniel looked.
The number was hidden.
No name.
No profile.
Nothing.
Officer Bennett handed the phone back.
“We need to verify the source.””
Daniel nodded.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“But first, I need answers.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I already told you.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You told me a story.””
Her face tightened.
“What’s the difference?””
“The truth doesn’t need excuses.””
A silence followed.
Then Vanessa looked at Olivia and Sophie.
“Can we not do this in front of them?””
Daniel looked down.
He saw his daughters.
The two people he should have protected.
He softened immediately.
“You’re right.””
Vanessa seemed relieved.
Then Daniel continued:
“They deserve to hear why they were taken away from their father.””
Her relief disappeared.
“Daniel.””
“No more secrets.””
Olivia looked up at him.
“Daddy?””
He knelt beside her.
“I’m sorry.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“For what?””
“For believing someone else when I should have listened to you.””
She shook her head.
“You didn’t know.””
Daniel touched her hair.
“I should have.””
The little girl looked away.
“Mom said you would blame yourself.””
His chest tightened.
“She knew me too well.””
Sophie reached into her pocket.
The silver key was still there.
Daniel looked at it.
“Where did your mom tell you it opened?””
Sophie glanced at Vanessa.
Then whispered:
“She said there was a place where she kept things she couldn’t trust anyone with.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Daniel, don’t.””
Everyone noticed.
The fear in her voice.
Not anger.
Fear.
Daniel slowly stood.
“Where?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She didn’t.
Daniel looked at the key.
“Where?””
Olivia spoke softly.
“Mom said it was somewhere you would never look.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why?””
“She said because you loved people too much.””
The words confused him.
Then he remembered.
A place.
A small storage room beneath the old family house.
A place Claire always joked about.
“You never go in there,” she used to say.
“It’s just boxes.””
Daniel stared.
The old house.
The one they sold after Claire’s illness became worse.
The one Vanessa had helped him clean out.
His eyes moved to Vanessa.
“You knew about the storage room.””
She said nothing.
That was enough.
Officer Bennett noticed.
“Mrs. Reed?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I didn’t know what was inside.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“But you knew it existed.””
She looked at him.
“I was helping you.””
“You were always helping me.””
The bitterness in his voice was impossible to miss.
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“You think I wanted this?””
Daniel stared.
“I don’t know what you wanted anymore.””
For a moment, Vanessa looked genuinely hurt.
Then something colder replaced it.
“You really want the truth?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
She continued.
“Fine.””
She took a breath.
“Claire wasn’t innocent.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Stop.””
“She knew things.””
“What things?””
Vanessa looked around.
Then lowered her voice.
“Things about your family.””
Daniel frowned.
“My family?””
“Yes.””
“What are you talking about?””
Before Vanessa could answer, a loud notification came from Officer Bennett’s tablet.
He looked down.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Daniel asked.
The officer looked up.
“We found the security footage.””
Daniel’s pulse quickened.
“From where?””
“The hospital.””
Vanessa went pale.
Daniel noticed.
“Play it.””
Officer Bennett hesitated.
“It’s not a good idea to watch this here.””
“Play it.””
The officer looked at the crowd.
Then at Daniel.
Finally, he turned the tablet around.
A video appeared.
A hospital hallway.
The timestamp showed:
*11:42 PM*
The night Claire died.
Daniel remembered that night perfectly.
He remembered sitting beside Claire.
Holding her hand.
Telling her he loved her.
But he never remembered leaving the room.
The video played.
A nurse walked by.
A doctor entered.
Then, twenty minutes later…
Vanessa appeared.
She walked down the hallway.
Looked around.
And entered Claire’s room.
Daniel stopped breathing.
The ballroom became silent.
The footage continued.
Vanessa stayed inside for seven minutes.
Seven minutes when Daniel believed Claire was alone.
Seven minutes before Claire’s heart monitor alarmed.
Seven minutes before the doctors rushed in.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“What were you doing in that room?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
The officer paused the video.
“Mr. Hayes, we need to know.””
Daniel’s voice was barely a whisper.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa stared at him.
Then she said something that made every person in the room freeze.
“I was trying to stop Claire from telling you.””
Daniel felt his blood run cold.
“Stop her from telling me what?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
But this time, Daniel couldn’t tell if they were real.
“She knew about the money.””
Daniel frowned.
“What money?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“The money Claire moved before she died.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“She was planning something.””
“You’re lying.””
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“She was going to take the girls and leave you with nothing.””
Daniel stared at her.
Then his phone buzzed again.
Another message.
Same unknown number.
This time, only three words:
*Ask about Claire’s account.*
Daniel looked up.
Because suddenly he remembered something.
A conversation from months before Claire died.
A conversation he had forgotten.
Claire had grabbed his hand in the kitchen.
Her face pale.
Her voice trembling.
She had said:
“Daniel, if anything happens to me, promise me you’ll check the account I never told you about.””
At the time, he thought she was scared.
He thought illness had made her anxious.
But now…
Now he wondered if she had been trying to warn him.
And Vanessa had been there.
Listening.
Waiting.
Then Officer Bennett’s radio crackled.
A voice came through.
“Officer Bennett, we found something else connected to the report.””
The officer lifted the radio.
“What is it?””
A pause.
Then:
“The woman who reported the children missing wasn’t Vanessa Reed.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
The officer looked at him.
“She used another name.””
Everyone stared.
“Whose name?””
May you like
The officer’s face turned serious.
“The report was filed under Claire Hayes.””
