Chapter 7: The Man in Claire’s Photograph
The paper trembled slightly in Daniel’s hand.
Not because he was afraid.
Because he was exhausted.
Exhausted from chasing answers that always led to another question.
He looked at the sentence again.
*You’re looking in the wrong place, Daniel. Ask Vanessa who Claire was protecting.*
The words felt personal.
Not like a warning from a stranger.
Like a message from someone who knew him.
Someone who knew Claire.
Someone who knew Vanessa.
Daniel slowly turned.
“Who was Claire protecting?””
Vanessa didn’t speak.
The silence was louder than any confession.
Officer Bennett stepped closer.
“Mrs. Reed.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You need to answer.””
She looked down at the floor.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“No.””
Her eyes lifted.
“Daniel—”
“No more.””
His voice was low.
“You don’t get to say that anymore.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“What do you want me to say?””
“The truth.””
She laughed quietly.
A tired, broken sound.
“You keep asking for the truth like it’s simple.””
Daniel stared.
“It should be.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Not after everything that happened.””
The basement felt smaller.
The walls seemed to close around them.
Daniel picked up the photograph again.
The man beside Claire.
The stranger who somehow connected to everything.
“Who is he?””
Vanessa looked at the picture.
And for a second, something passed across her face.
Recognition.
Pain.
Fear.
Daniel saw all of it.
“You know him.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I knew of him.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“It’s the only one I can give.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Why?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Because Claire asked me to protect him.””
The words stopped him.
“What?””
Officer Bennett immediately focused.
“Protect him from what?””
Vanessa looked at the photograph.
“From the same person Claire was afraid of.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“Who?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
She walked toward an old chair and sat down.
For the first time all night, she looked tired.
Not like someone pretending.
Like someone who had been carrying something too heavy for too long.
“His name was Adrian Cole.””
Daniel stared at the picture.
“Who is Adrian Cole?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“He was Claire’s doctor.””
Daniel frowned.
“A doctor?””
“Yes.””
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
She looked at the letter in Daniel’s hand.
“Because Claire never told you everything.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then tell me.””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Claire found something.””
“What?””
“Something connected to the hospital.””
Daniel waited.
“She discovered that several patients had unexplained complications after receiving medication from the same supplier.””
Officer Bennett’s expression changed.
“Are you saying there was a pattern?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Claire thought so.””
Daniel looked at the doctor’s letter.
The one saying Claire’s condition wasn’t natural.
“She investigated?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because Claire was Claire.””
Daniel almost smiled.
Because that was true.
His wife never ignored something that felt wrong.
“She couldn’t let it go,” Vanessa continued.
“She started asking questions. She contacted Adrian. He helped her understand the medical records.””
Daniel looked back at the photograph.
“So why didn’t she tell me?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That you would get involved.””
Daniel felt hurt.
“My wife didn’t trust me?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“She loved you.””
The words surprised him.
“She knew you would try to fix it.””
Daniel said nothing.
“And she knew whoever was responsible might come after you.””
A silence followed.
Then Officer Bennett asked:
“Why were you in Claire’s hospital room that night?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I told you.””
“You said Claire asked you to come.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“Because she wanted me to take something.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“A file.””
“What file?””
“I don’t know.””
He stared.
“You don’t know?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Claire gave me a key.””
Daniel immediately looked at Sophie’s key.
“No.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Not that one.””
Daniel frowned.
“She had another.””
“What happened to it?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I lost it.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Of course.””
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“I’m serious.””
“Then explain.””
“She put it in my hand and told me if anything happened to her, I needed to find Adrian.””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“And?””
“I went back the next day.””
“To the hospital?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Vanessa’s voice became quieter.
“The file was gone.””
Daniel stared.
“Who took it?””
“I don’t know.””
Another unknown.
Another missing answer.
But this time, Daniel believed there was something different.
Vanessa wasn’t performing.
She was remembering.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because Claire made me promise.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You keep using her promises as excuses.””
“I’m not.””
“Then why?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because Claire said if you knew, you would destroy yourself trying to find whoever hurt her.””
Daniel looked away.
Because that sounded exactly like Claire.
She always worried about everyone else.
Even while dying.
Especially while dying.
Then Officer Bennett’s radio interrupted.
A voice came through.
“Officer Bennett, we found the source of the anonymous messages.””
Everyone turned.
The officer grabbed the radio.
“Who?””
A pause.
Then:
“The messages were sent from a device registered to Adrian Cole.””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
His heart raced.
The man who was supposed to be Claire’s ally.
The man she trusted.
The man whose picture she hid.
Was contacting him.
“Where is he?”” Daniel asked.
The officer checked the information.
“He’s nearby.””
“How nearby?””
The officer looked up.
“Less than ten miles.””
Daniel stared.
After six months of searching for answers…
the answer had been watching from close by.
“Can we contact him?””
Officer Bennett shook his head.
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
“Because there’s another issue.””
Daniel waited.
“The device sending the messages was destroyed thirty minutes ago.””
Daniel frowned.
“Destroyed?””
“Yes.””
“By who?””
The officer looked at Vanessa.
Then at Daniel.
“We don’t know.””
A terrible silence followed.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Everyone looked.
Unknown number.
Again.
This time, Daniel answered immediately.
“Who is this?””
For a few seconds, there was only breathing.
Then a man’s voice.
Low.
Tired.
Afraid.
“Daniel Hayes?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Adrian Cole.””
Daniel’s grip tightened.
The man continued.
“I’m sorry I waited this long.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Why are you contacting me now?””
A pause.
Then Adrian said:
“Because Vanessa is not the person you should be afraid of.””
Daniel went still.
The basement seemed silent.
“Then who is?””
The answer came in a whisper.
“The person who has been controlling Vanessa since the beginning.””
Daniel’s eyes moved toward her.
Vanessa looked confused.
Actually confused.
Adrian continued:
“Daniel, Claire didn’t hide that box from Vanessa.””
A pause.
“She hid it from me.””
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“What?””
“Because she found out I was involved.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“What are you talking about?””
Adrian ignored her.
Daniel heard panic in his voice.
“Listen carefully. You have to leave that house.””
“Why?””
“Because if they know you opened the box…”
The line crackled.
Then Adrian’s voice became urgent.
“Daniel, you need to run.””
A loud sound came through the phone.
Like a door opening.
Then Adrian whispered one final sentence.
“The person who poisoned Claire is standing inside that house with you.””
The call ended.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
Nobody moved.
Then everyone heard it.
A soft sound from upstairs.
Footsteps.
Someone walking through the empty house.
Daniel looked toward the basement stairs.
Because they weren’t alone.
May you like
And whoever had entered…
was coming down.
