Chapter 6: The Secret Beneath the Floor
Daniel looked at Emily.
And for the first time that night, he didn’t know what to believe.
The woman standing across from him was Claire’s sister.
The person Claire trusted.
The person who had just hugged his daughters and promised she never forgot them.
But Vanessa’s words hung between them.
*It was her sister.*
Emily’s face turned pale.
“That’s insane.””
Vanessa didn’t respond.
She didn’t need to.
The accusation was already planted.
Daniel hated that a small part of him wondered.
Not because he believed Vanessa.
Because after six months of lies, every truth had become fragile.
Every memory had cracks.
“Emily,” Daniel said quietly.
She looked at him.
Her eyes filled with hurt.
“You don’t believe her, do you?””
Daniel opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That hesitation hurt her more than any accusation.
Emily stepped back.
“Wow.””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“No. That’s not what I meant.””
“Then what did you mean?””
“I don’t know what I mean anymore.””
The honesty in his voice silenced everyone.
Because that was the truth.
His entire life had become a maze of missing pieces.
Claire’s letter.
The fake Portugal arrangement.
The hospital footage.
The hidden account.
The strange messages.
And now this.
Emily wiped her eyes.
“Daniel, I loved Claire more than anyone.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Her voice cracked.
“You think because Vanessa said something, it suddenly becomes a possibility?””
Daniel looked down.
“I’m trying to understand.””
Emily nodded slowly.
“Then understand this.””
She pointed toward Vanessa.
“She has spent six months controlling every person around you.””
Vanessa scoffed.
“That’s ridiculous.””
Emily turned.
“Is it?””
The room fell silent.
“You knew Daniel was grieving. You knew he wasn’t thinking clearly. You knew he trusted you.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“And you knew Claire was hiding things from him.””
Emily froze.
Daniel noticed.
A tiny pause.
A tiny reaction.
But it was there.
“What things?”” Daniel asked.
Emily looked away.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
His voice was exhausted.
“I can’t do this anymore.””
He looked at both women.
“I need the truth.””
Nobody answered.
Then Officer Bennett spoke.
“We can continue this here, or we can go somewhere private.””
Daniel looked at his daughters.
Olivia was watching him carefully.
She looked scared.
Not because of the police.
Because the adults around her kept changing.
He crouched beside her.
“Hey.””
She looked down.
“What’s wrong?””
Daniel forced himself to smile.
“Nothing you need to worry about.””
“But everyone is fighting.””
He swallowed.
“I know.””
“Is Mommy in trouble?””
The question broke him.
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“But everyone keeps saying things about her.””
Daniel pulled her closer.
“Your mom loved you.””
Olivia nodded.
“She told us.””
“What did she tell you?””
The girl looked at Sophie.
Then whispered:
“She said people might try to make Daddy angry.””
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“What else?””
“She said when people are scared, they sometimes tell stories.””
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
Then Emily.
“Did she say anything else?””
Olivia nodded.
“She said… don’t trust the loudest person in the room.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel stood slowly.
Because suddenly, he remembered something.
Vanessa had always been the one explaining.
Always the one filling silence.
Always the one telling him what happened.
Before he could think about it, Officer Bennett interrupted.
“We need to move.””
Daniel nodded.
“Where?””
“The house.””
The old house.
The place where Claire had hidden whatever she couldn’t tell him.
Two hours later, Daniel stood outside the home he once shared with his wife.
The house looked smaller.
Different.
The paint was faded.
The garden overgrown.
But when he opened the front door, memories rushed back.
Claire laughing in the kitchen.
Olivia running down the hallway.
Sophie falling asleep on the couch during movie nights.
For a moment, he almost forgot everything.
Then he remembered why he was there.
To find the truth.
Vanessa stood behind him.
Officer Bennett had insisted everyone involved remain nearby until they understood what was happening.
Emily stayed in the car with the girls.
Daniel walked through the hallway.
Slowly.
Quietly.
He reached the basement door.
His hand froze on the handle.
Vanessa noticed.
“You remember.””
Daniel didn’t look at her.
“Remember what?””
“Claire hated this room.””
Daniel opened the door.
“No.””
He looked back.
“She hated that I never used it.””
The basement smelled like dust and old wood.
Boxes covered the walls.
Daniel walked down the stairs.
Each step felt heavier.
Vanessa followed.
“Daniel.””
He stopped.
“What?””
“You should know something.””
He turned.
“What?””
Her face was serious.
“Claire wasn’t the only person hiding things.””
Daniel stared.
“Meaning?””
Vanessa looked around.
“I found something here before.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“When?””
“After she died.””
“You came here alone?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Why?””
She hesitated.
“Because I was looking for answers.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“Of course you were.””
She ignored the comment.
“I found documents.””
“What documents?””
“I don’t know.””
Daniel stared.
“You don’t know?””
“They were encrypted.””
That sounded strange.
“Encrypted?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I couldn’t open them.””
Daniel walked closer.
“Where are they?””
She looked at the floor.
“I don’t know.””
Another answer.
Another thing she didn’t know.
Daniel turned away.
Then he noticed something.
A scratch.
Near the corner of the basement floor.
A mark on the wooden boards.
He stepped closer.
“Wait.””
Vanessa stopped.
“What?””
Daniel knelt.
He ran his fingers over the scratch.
Claire’s handwriting.
Barely visible.
But there.
A small arrow.
Pointing downward.
His heart started beating faster.
“She marked this.””
Vanessa said nothing.
Daniel looked around.
Then found a loose wooden panel.
He pulled.
It moved.
Underneath was a small metal box.
Covered in dust.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Daniel reached for it.
The silver key from Sophie’s pocket fit perfectly.
Click.
The lock opened.
Inside were three things.
A flash drive.
A thick envelope.
And a photograph.
Daniel picked up the photograph first.
His breath caught.
It was Claire.
But she wasn’t alone.
Standing beside her was a man Daniel had never seen before.
On the back of the photo were six words:
*The person who saved my life.*
Daniel frowned.
“Who is this?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
Then stopped.
Her face changed.
“You know him?””
Daniel looked at her.
“You do.””
“No.””
“You reacted.””
She looked away.
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Not from Claire.
From a doctor.
He read the first line.
And his entire body went cold.
*Mrs. Claire Hayes’s condition was not caused by natural illness.*
Daniel stopped breathing.
He kept reading.
*Blood tests indicate possible exposure to a toxic substance. Further investigation was recommended.*
His hands shook.
Claire wasn’t sick.
She had been poisoned.
The room felt silent.
Then a sound came from behind him.
A phone ringing.
Vanessa’s phone.
She looked down.
Her expression changed.
Daniel noticed.
“Who is it?””
She didn’t answer.
The phone continued ringing.
Finally, Officer Bennett stepped forward.
“Answer it.””
Vanessa looked at everyone.
Then slowly picked up.
“Hello?””
A voice came through.
Daniel couldn’t hear the words.
But he saw Vanessa’s face lose all color.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“No. That’s impossible.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who is calling?””
Vanessa ignored him.
“Where did you get that?””
Another pause.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Don’t tell him.””
Daniel froze.
The call ended.
He stared.
“Don’t tell who?””
Vanessa looked at him.
And this time…
she wasn’t afraid of being caught.
She was afraid someone else already knew.
Then the basement window shattered.
Everyone jumped.
A stone fell onto the floor.
Wrapped around it was a piece of paper.
Daniel picked it up.
Only one sentence was written.
*You’re looking in the wrong place, Daniel. Ask Vanessa who Claire was protecting.*
He slowly turned toward Vanessa.
May you like
And for the first time…
she had no answer.
