Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
“Daniel, please tell me the girls are with you… because Vanessa just called me and said she had already taken care of them.””
The voice on the other end of the phone belonged to Claire’s older sister, Emily.
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.
He looked at Vanessa.
She was still standing near the exit.
Still watching him.
Still pretending she wasn’t terrified.
“Emily,” Daniel said slowly, “what did Vanessa tell you?””
There was a pause.
A long one.
The kind of silence that only came when someone realized the truth was much worse than they expected.
“Daniel,” Emily whispered, “you don’t know?””
His grip tightened around the phone.
“Know what?””
Across the ballroom, guests shifted uncomfortably. Some looked away. Others stared openly. The wedding that had been planned for months had become something else entirely.
A courtroom without a judge.
A battlefield without weapons.
Only secrets.
Emily took a shaky breath.
“Six months ago, Vanessa called me the night the girls left.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“She told me you wanted space.””
The words hit him.
“No.””
“She said you were struggling. She said Claire’s death had changed you and that you couldn’t handle being a father and rebuilding your life at the same time.””
Daniel looked down at Olivia and Sophie.
Their faces were pressed against his suit.
Listening.
Remembering.
Emily continued.
“She said the girls were staying with your aunt in Portugal because you needed time to get yourself together.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Every memory rearranged itself.
Every conversation.
Every excuse.
Every moment he had blamed himself.
“Why didn’t you call me?”” he asked.
Emily’s voice cracked.
“I tried.””
Daniel opened his eyes.
“What?””
“I called you three times that week.””
The ballroom became colder.
“I called your office. I texted you. I even drove to your house.””
Daniel stared.
“You never came.””
Emily’s breathing became uneven.
“Because Vanessa told me you didn’t want to see anyone. She said you were falling apart.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa again.
This time, she looked away.
That small movement confirmed everything.
“She lied,” Daniel whispered.
Emily didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Daniel knew.
He had spent six months thinking he was the one failing.
Thinking he was the husband who couldn’t save his wife.
The father who couldn’t protect his daughters.
The man who needed someone else to manage his life.
But Vanessa hadn’t helped him.
She had isolated him.
“Where are you?”” Emily asked.
“The wedding.””
Emily went silent.
Then:
“Daniel… don’t let her leave.””
His eyes lifted.
Vanessa was already moving.
Not quickly.
Not obviously.
Just one careful step at a time toward the side door.
Like she believed nobody would notice.
But Daniel noticed.
“Stay on the phone,” he told Emily.
“Daniel—”
“I need you to hear this.””
He ended the call but didn’t hang up.
He slipped the phone into his jacket pocket.
Then he turned toward Vanessa.
“Where are you going?””
Every guest heard him.
Vanessa stopped.
Her hand rested on the door handle.
“I need some air.””
Daniel gave a humorless laugh.
“Right now?””
“Daniel, you’re upset.””
“My daughters showed up barefoot and crying at my wedding, and you’re worried about me being upset?””
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“Lower your voice.””
The room went completely still.
Daniel stared at her.
“Why?””
“What?””
“Why should I lower my voice?””
His eyes moved across the guests.
“Everyone here deserves to hear this.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
His voice shook.
But not from fear.
From anger.
“You spent six months telling me my daughters were safe.””
Olivia looked up at him.
Daniel swallowed.
“You told me they needed time away.””
Sophie held onto his hand.
“You told me their aunt was taking care of them.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“I was trying to help you.””
Daniel almost couldn’t believe those words.
“Help me?””
“Yes.””
Her voice became sharper.
“You were barely functioning after Claire died.””
A murmur moved through the room.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You couldn’t sleep. You couldn’t work. You couldn’t even look at your daughters without breaking down.””
Daniel flinched.
Because parts of it were true.
He had been broken.
But he had never stopped loving his children.
“I was grieving,” he said.
“And I was there.””
Vanessa pointed toward herself.
“I was the one who picked up the pieces.””
Daniel looked at her.
“No.””
His voice became quieter.
“You picked up the pieces because you wanted to own what was left.””
The guests reacted immediately.
A few people gasped.
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“That’s cruel.””
“Is it?””
Daniel held up Claire’s letter.
“Because my dead wife warned me about you.””
Vanessa stared at the paper.
For the first time, her mask slipped completely.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What did Claire find?””
Vanessa looked at him.
And something strange happened.
The fear disappeared.
She became calm.
Too calm.
“You really think Claire knew everything?””
Daniel felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa smiled faintly.
Not happily.
Almost sadly.
“You always did believe she was perfect.””
Olivia grabbed Daniel’s hand.
“Daddy…”
He immediately softened.
“I’m here.””
He knelt beside his daughters.
“I’m not leaving you.””
Sophie whispered:
“Mom said you would say that.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
“She said if anything happened, you would think it was your fault.””
His heart broke.
“What else did she say?””
Sophie looked down.
“She said Vanessa was good at making people feel guilty.””
The words hung in the air.
Vanessa looked away.
Daniel noticed.
She wasn’t denying it.
A man near the front row stepped forward.
It was Daniel’s best friend, Marcus.
“Daniel.””
Daniel looked over.
Marcus had been silent the entire time.
“Do you remember the week before the girls left?””
Daniel frowned.
“What about it?””
Marcus hesitated.
“You asked me if I thought something was strange.””
Daniel searched his memory.
Then he remembered.
The late-night phone call.
The strange feeling he couldn’t explain.
“I told you Vanessa seemed stressed.””
Marcus nodded.
“She was.””
Vanessa turned.
“Marcus, don’t.””
But he continued.
“She asked me questions.””
Daniel stared.
“What questions?””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“About your finances.””
Silence.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?””
“She asked how much your house was worth. How your accounts were set up. Whether Claire had left anything behind.””
Vanessa’s face turned pale.
“Stop talking.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“I thought she was just being practical because you two were getting married.””
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“But?””
Marcus swallowed.
“But two weeks later, she asked me something else.””
“What?””
Marcus looked directly at Vanessa.
“She asked how difficult it would be for you to get full custody of the girls if their mother wasn’t around.””
The room exploded with whispers.
Daniel felt sick.
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then what happened?”” Daniel asked.
Vanessa looked at him.
For a moment, she seemed like she might finally tell the truth.
Instead, she reached into her purse.
Daniel saw the movement.
“What are you doing?””
She pulled out a small folder.
“I was going to show you this after the wedding.””
Daniel didn’t move.
“What is it?””
Vanessa held it tightly.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Her eyes moved to Olivia and Sophie.
Then back to Daniel.
“That Claire was hiding things from you too.””
Daniel stared at the folder.
“No.””
“You don’t know what she did.””
“You’re lying.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You should open it before you decide.””
Daniel looked at the folder.
He wanted to ignore it.
He wanted to throw it away.
But then Olivia’s fingers touched his sleeve.
“Daddy.””
He looked down.
“Mom told us something.””
“What?””
Olivia swallowed.
“She said if Vanessa ever showed you papers…”
Daniel leaned closer.
“What did she say?””
Olivia looked terrified.
“She said not to believe the first thing you see.””
Daniel looked back at Vanessa.
The folder remained in her hand.
Waiting.
A trap.
Or a truth.
He couldn’t tell anymore.
Then the ballroom doors opened again.
Everyone turned.
A police officer stepped inside.
Daniel’s heart dropped.
The officer scanned the room.
“Daniel Hayes?””
“Yes?””
The officer walked forward.
“I’m Officer Bennett. We received a report involving two missing children.””
The guests gasped.
Daniel instinctively pulled Olivia and Sophie closer.
The officer looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Daniel.
“Mr. Hayes, we need to ask you some questions.””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
But Daniel saw it.
The smallest smile.
A smile that disappeared almost instantly.
And suddenly he understood.
She hadn’t been trying to escape.
She had been waiting.
Waiting for this moment.
May you like
Because Vanessa wasn’t afraid of the police walking in.
She had invited them.
