Chapter 10: The Mother at the Door
Marcus forgot how to breathe.
The woman standing outside the door looked older than the photograph.
Older than the memory Jordan never had.
But the eyes were the same.
The same eyes that stared back from the picture on the table.
Jordan stood frozen behind Marcus.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then the woman whispered again.
“Jordan?””
The sound of his name broke something inside him.
Jordan took one step forward.
Then stopped.
His face was filled with confusion, fear, and disbelief.
“No.””
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
“Jordan…”
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You’re not real.””
Marcus looked back at him.
“Jordan…”
Jordan looked at the woman.
“My mother is dead.””
The woman closed her eyes.
A painful expression crossed her face.
“I know what they told you.””
Jordan’s breathing became uneven.
Marcus stepped aside slowly.
The woman entered the house.
The same house where Jordan had grown up.
The same house where his entire identity had just been turned upside down.
Maya stood beside Lily, holding her younger sister’s hand.
Vanessa remained near the couch.
Silent.
Almost invisible.
But Marcus noticed.
She wasn’t surprised.
She wasn’t shocked.
She looked like someone watching a storm arrive that she had known was coming.
Marcus turned toward her.
“You knew.””
Vanessa looked down.
“Marcus…”
“You knew she was coming.””
“I knew she might.””
Jordan turned.
“Might?””
His voice was sharp.
“You knew my mother was alive?””
Vanessa looked at him.
And the pain on her face was real.
That almost made it worse.
Because Marcus couldn’t tell anymore where guilt ended and truth began.
The woman looked at Jordan.
“My name is Renee.””
Jordan stared.
“Renee?””
She nodded.
“I’m your mother.””
Jordan laughed once.
A broken, confused sound.
“I don’t know what I’m supposed to say.””
Renee stepped closer.
“You don’t have to say anything.””
“No.””
Jordan wiped his face.
“No, I do.””
His voice cracked.
“I spent ten years thinking you were gone.””
Renee looked down.
“I know.””
“I had your picture hidden because I thought I wasn’t supposed to ask questions.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
“I wondered why you left.””
Renee closed her eyes.
“Jordan…”
“And now you’re standing here telling me everyone lied?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew the answer was yes.
Marcus walked toward the center of the room.
“Renee.””
She looked at him.
“I need to understand.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“Why did you disappear?””
Renee looked at Vanessa.
The silence between them was immediate.
Marcus noticed.
There was history there.
Painful history.
Renee spoke quietly.
“Because Andre found us.””
Jordan froze.
The name meant nothing to him.
But it meant everything to the adults.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Andre.””
Vanessa nodded.
“His biological father.””
Jordan looked between them.
“So my father was the reason my mother disappeared?””
Renee looked at him.
“Your father was dangerous.””
The word settled heavily.
Jordan looked away.
“Then why didn’t you come back?””
Renee struggled to answer.
“Because I believed coming back would put you in danger.””
“But I was already alone.””
The words hit her.
Renee covered her mouth.
Marcus saw the pain on her face.
She wasn’t pretending.
She had missed him.
She had carried that loss.
But that didn’t erase what Jordan had suffered.
“You should have had a choice,” Marcus said.
Renee looked at him.
“I know.””
“And you should have trusted him with the truth.””
“I know.””
Jordan looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
His expression changed.
“You knew my mother was alive.””
“Yes.””
“And you let me believe she abandoned me.””
Vanessa started crying.
“I thought it would keep you safe.””
Jordan shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“You kept me obedient.””
Vanessa flinched.
Because the accusation was too accurate.
Marcus looked at her.
“Maya said you told her I would leave.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
She looked at Renee.
“Of him finding out.””
Jordan frowned.
“Finding out what?””
Nobody answered.
Marcus felt it again.
Another hidden door.
Another secret.
He looked at Renee.
“What are we still missing?””
Renee hesitated.
Then she reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Marcus immediately recognized it.
Not because of the paper.
Because of the handwriting.
The same handwriting as the message.
The same handwriting from the warning.
Jordan stared.
“What is that?””
Renee looked at him.
“This was supposed to reach you when you turned eighteen.””
Jordan swallowed.
“Why didn’t it?””
Renee looked at Vanessa.
The answer was obvious.
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus took the envelope.
On the front were three words.
*FOR MY SON.*
Jordan stared at it.
His hands trembled.
Marcus looked at him.
“Do you want to open it?””
Jordan didn’t answer immediately.
For the first time, nobody forced him.
Nobody controlled him.
Nobody decided for him.
Finally, he nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus handed it over.
Jordan opened the envelope.
He unfolded the paper.
And as he read the first sentence, his entire expression changed.
“What?””
Marcus looked at him.
Jordan looked up.
His voice was barely a whisper.
“She knew.””
“Who?””
Jordan looked at Renee.
Then Vanessa.
Then Marcus.
“She knew someone would try to make me hate myself.””
The room went silent.
May you like
Jordan looked back at the letter.
“And she knew exactly who.””
