Chapter 5: The Name Hidden Inside the House

Nobody spoke.

The message remained on Marcus’s screen.

“She doesn’t know you found the original file.””

Five seconds.

Ten seconds.

The room stayed frozen.

Then Jordan quietly asked:

“Who sent that?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Marcus looked at her.

“Who?””

Her lips moved.

No sound came out.

That was enough.

Marcus turned the phone around.

“Jordan.””

Jordan read the message.

His eyebrows pulled together.

“Original file?””

He looked confused.

“What file?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

His voice was different now.

Not loud.

Not angry.

Certain.

“You’re going to tell me.””

Vanessa looked around the room.

At Marcus.

At Jordan.

At Maya.

At Lily.

Four faces waiting for answers.

“I need you to understand something.””

Marcus crossed his arms.

“Then make me understand.””

Vanessa sat down slowly.

For the first time since Marcus had known her, she looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“I was trying to protect this family.””

Jordan let out a bitter laugh.

“By blaming me?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I never wanted that to happen.””

“But it did.””

She looked away.

Marcus noticed something.

She wasn’t defending herself anymore.

She was choosing her words carefully.

Like every sentence could destroy her.

“What is the file?”” Marcus asked.

Vanessa swallowed.

“It’s something from before we moved here.””

Marcus glanced around the living room.

The house they had built together.

The place where their children had grown up.

“Before we moved here?””

“Yes.””

“And Jordan is involved?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Jordan stepped forward.

“Why do you keep talking about me like I’m not standing here?””

Nobody stopped him.

Because he was right.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Jordan…”

“No.””

His eyes were wet now.

“You have spent years acting like you were protecting me.””

Vanessa whispered:

“I was.””

“Then why does everyone know something except me?””

That question hit harder than anything else.

Marcus looked at Jordan.

The boy who had entered his life as a scared seven-year-old.

The boy who had once asked him if he could call him Dad.

The boy who had waited months before saying it because he was afraid Marcus would say no.

Marcus remembered that moment.

And suddenly, everything felt connected.

There was a reason Jordan always seemed afraid of being abandoned.

A reason he never fought back when people accused him.

A reason Vanessa’s words affected him so deeply.

Marcus turned to Vanessa.

“What happened before?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I can’t tell you.””

The answer stunned him.

“Can’t?””

“I promised.””

“To who?””

She didn’t respond.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes lifted.

“I promised I would keep him safe.””

Marcus looked at Jordan.

“Him?””

Vanessa nodded.

Jordan looked confused.

“Who?””

No one answered.

Then Maya spoke.

“Mom…”

Everyone turned.

Maya looked at Vanessa.

“You said Dad would find out.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Maya continued.

“You said if he knew, he wouldn’t look at Jordan the same way.””

Marcus stared.

“What did you mean?””

Maya started crying again.

“I don’t know.””

“Then tell me what you do know.””

She wiped her face.

“She said Jordan had a secret.””

Jordan went still.

“A secret?””

Maya nodded.

“She said you would hate him if you knew.””

Jordan looked at Marcus.

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

The kind of fear that came from believing something terrible might be true.

Marcus immediately shook his head.

“Jordan.””

Jordan looked away.

“What if she’s right?””

The question hurt.

Marcus walked toward him.

“Look at me.””

Jordan didn’t.

“Jordan.””

Slowly, he did.

“You are my son.””

Jordan’s eyes filled.

“No matter what anyone says.””

Vanessa looked away.

Marcus noticed.

“You knew this would hurt him.””

“I knew the truth would hurt everyone.””

“What truth?””

Vanessa stood.

“I need the envelope.””

“No.””

Marcus held the phone tighter.

“You don’t get to hide things anymore.””

Vanessa looked at the staircase.

Then at Lily.

Then Maya.

Then Jordan.

Finally, she whispered:

“The envelope was never meant to expose Jordan.””

Marcus frowned.

“Then what was it for?””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“It was meant to warn him.””

Jordan stared.

“Warn me about what?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, she walked toward the kitchen counter.

She stopped beside a drawer.

Marcus immediately noticed.

“What are you doing?””

She slowly opened it.

Inside was another envelope.

Older.

Yellowed.

Not sealed.

Jordan stepped closer.

“Why do you have another one?””

Vanessa looked at him.

And Marcus saw something he had never seen before.

Guilt.

Deep, painful guilt.

“Because this one arrived ten years ago.””

Jordan stared.

“Ten years?””

Marcus looked at the envelope.

And then he saw the name written across it.

Not Jordan.

Not Vanessa.

Not Maya.

His own name.

Marcus.

His hand slowly moved toward it.

But before he touched it, Vanessa said:

“If you open that…”

She stopped.

Marcus looked up.

“If I open it?””

Vanessa’s voice trembled.

“You’ll finally know why I did what I did.””

Marcus picked up the envelope.

The paper felt heavier than it should have.

And then he noticed something written in the corner.

A date.

A date from before Jordan came into his life.

May you like

A date Marcus remembered.

Because it was the day everything changed.
