Chapter 12: The Evidence Nobody Wanted Found
The USB drive sat in Marcus’s palm.
Small.
Simple.
Almost impossible to believe it could hold something powerful enough to tear apart a family.
But Marcus had learned one thing.
The smallest things often carried the biggest secrets.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You know what’s on this.””
She didn’t deny it.
That was enough.
Jordan noticed.
“You do?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I know what it contains.””
“What?””
She looked down.
“Something I should have told you years ago.””
Marcus connected the drive to the laptop on the kitchen counter.
Everyone gathered around.
Nobody spoke.
The screen lit up.
One folder appeared.
No name.
No date.
Just one file.
*JORDAN_FINAL.*
Jordan stared.
“My name.””
Marcus looked at Renee.
“Is this safe?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus opened it.
The first thing that appeared was an audio recording.
A timestamp.
Ten years earlier.
Jordan looked confused.
“An audio file?””
Renee nodded.
“Listen.””
Marcus pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a man’s voice.
Deep.
Cold.
Angry.
Marcus immediately knew.
Andre.
“You think you can hide him from me forever?””
Jordan froze.
The voice continued.
“He’s my son.””
A woman’s voice responded.
Renee.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
The recording shook slightly.
Like it had been captured secretly.
Andre laughed.
“You really think Marcus can protect him?””
Marcus felt his body go still.
His own name.
Again.
Andre continued.
“He doesn’t even know the truth.””
Vanessa looked away.
Jordan stared at the screen.
Renee’s voice became quieter.
“Leave him alone.””
Andre answered:
“You know what happens if I don’t.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Jordan looked at Marcus.
“What truth?””
Marcus didn’t know.
But Vanessa did.
He turned.
“Tell him.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I should have.””
“Yes.””
She looked at Jordan.
“Your mother didn’t disappear because of Andre alone.””
Jordan waited.
Vanessa struggled.
“Someone helped him.””
Marcus frowned.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Someone close.””
Jordan’s expression changed.
“Who?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Your uncle.””
The room froze.
Marcus stared.
“What uncle?””
Jordan looked confused.
“I don’t have an uncle.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Not anymore.””
Marcus felt a cold feeling.
“Explain.””
Vanessa sat down.
“Your mother had a brother.””
Jordan listened.
“He knew about Andre. He knew what Andre was doing.””
“And?””
“He made a deal.””
Renee closed her eyes.
Jordan looked at her.
“What deal?””
Renee answered.
“He gave Andre information.””
Jordan stepped back.
“About me?””
“Yes.””
Marcus felt anger building.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at the screen.
“Because he wanted money.””
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Jordan looked at the floor.
“My own family?””
Marcus immediately stepped toward him.
“Jordan.””
He shook his head.
“I don’t understand.””
Renee walked closer.
“That’s why your mother left.””
Jordan looked at her.
“She was running from him?””
“Yes.””
“And she thought everyone would betray me?””
Renee’s eyes filled.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“But why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Because after Jordan disappeared from the situation, I thought the danger was gone.””
Marcus frowned.
“Disappeared?””
Vanessa looked at Jordan.
“I helped change his records.””
Jordan went still.
Again.
The phrase.
Change his records.
Marcus looked at the laptop.
Then the envelopes.
Then the people around him.
So many pieces.
Still missing.
“What exactly did you change?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“I changed his last name.””
Jordan stared.
“What?””
Vanessa cried.
“I was trying to make him harder to find.””
Marcus looked at her.
“And you never told him?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid he would search for the old name.””
Jordan looked hurt.
“You erased part of me.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I was trying to save you.””
“But you took away my choice.””
She had no answer.
The words stayed.
Because they were true.
Suddenly, the laptop screen changed.
A new notification appeared.
The USB drive had one more file.
Marcus looked.
A video.
Created yesterday.
Everyone saw it.
Nobody touched anything.
Then the video started automatically.
The screen showed a dark room.
A man sitting in a chair.
Andre.
Jordan stopped breathing.
Andre looked directly into the camera.
And smiled.
“I know you’re watching this.””
Marcus felt every person in the room tense.
Andre continued.
“You probably think you finally found the truth.””
He leaned closer.
“But you didn’t.””
The screen flickered.
Then Andre said:
“Because the person who betrayed Jordan the most…”
He paused.
Everyone stared.
“…is still living in that house.””
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
Slowly, Marcus looked around the room.
At Vanessa.
At Renee.
At Jordan.
May you like
At his children.
And for the first time, he wondered if the danger had never been outside the house at all.
