Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Staircase

Nobody moved after Lily’s words.

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

“You saw what before?””

Lily looked at the envelope on the screen.

Her small fingers tightened around the sleeve of her pajamas.

“That envelope.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Lily, you don’t know what you’re talking about.””

The little girl looked at her stepmother.

And for the first time, Marcus saw something unexpected.

Lily wasn’t scared of Vanessa.

She was disappointed.

“I do know.””

Vanessa froze.

Marcus looked between them.

“Lily.””

His voice softened.

“Tell me.””

Lily walked closer.

She looked at Jordan.

Then Maya.

Then Vanessa.

“I saw Vanessa holding it yesterday.””

Jordan frowned.

“Yesterday?””

Lily nodded.

“Near the stairs.””

Marcus felt a cold feeling move through his chest.

The staircase.

Again.

Everything kept returning to the staircase.

“What happened after you saw it?”” Marcus asked.

Lily looked down.

“She told me to go play.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“That’s all?””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Let Lily finish.””

The room went quiet.

Lily swallowed.

“She looked scared.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“I was not scared.””

Lily looked at Marcus.

“She was.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus had always told his children that honesty mattered.

Even when honesty was uncomfortable.

Especially then.

He looked at Vanessa.

“Why didn’t you tell me about the envelope?””

She shook her head.

“Because it wasn’t important.””

Marcus gave a humorless laugh.

“An envelope with Jordan’s name on it wasn’t important?””

“You’re twisting this.””

“How?””

“Because you’re acting like I did something wrong.””

Marcus stared at her.

“I’m asking questions.””

“No. You’re accusing me.””

“Because I found you creating a situation where my son was blamed for something he didn’t do.””

The word hung in the air.

Son.

Jordan looked away quickly.

Marcus knew he heard it.

Vanessa did too.

“You always choose him.””

Marcus blinked.

“What?””

“You always have.””

The accusation surprised him.

Vanessa’s voice became quieter.

“Since he came into your life, everything has been about protecting Jordan.””

Jordan stepped forward.

“That’s not fair.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You don’t get to speak.””

Marcus immediately stepped between them.

“No.””

The room became silent.

“Everyone gets to speak.””

Vanessa looked away.

Marcus turned back to Maya.

“Maya.””

She flinched.

“Yes?””

“Why did you say Jordan pushed you?””

Her eyes filled again.

This time, Marcus waited.

He didn’t rush her.

He didn’t yell.

He let the silence force the truth forward.

Finally, Maya whispered:

“Because I thought I had to.””

Jordan looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Maya wiped her face.

“I didn’t know what else to do.””

Marcus felt his heart sink.

“What did you think you had to do?””

Maya looked at Vanessa.

The answer was written all over her face before she spoke.

“She told me everything would be okay.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“Maya.””

But Maya continued.

“She said Dad would finally understand.””

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“Understand what?””

Nobody answered.

The question sat in the room.

Heavy.

Unfinished.

Vanessa moved toward Maya.

“Maya, don’t.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Don’t what?””

Vanessa stopped.

For several seconds, she looked like she was deciding whether to tell the truth or protect herself.

Then her phone suddenly rang.

The sound cut through the room.

Everyone looked down.

Vanessa’s phone was on the table.

The screen lit up.

One name appeared.

Marcus saw it.

And Vanessa immediately grabbed the phone.

Too quickly.

Too desperately.

“Who is calling?”” Marcus asked.

“No one.””

Marcus looked at the screen.

“You just said no one.””

Vanessa held the phone tighter.

“I need to take this.””

She turned away.

But before she could answer, Marcus noticed something.

A message had appeared beneath the caller’s name.

Only a few words.

But enough to change Vanessa’s expression completely.

Jordan saw it too.

“What did it say?””

Vanessa locked the screen.

Marcus stared at her.

“Vanessa.””

She didn’t respond.

“Who is trying to reach you?””

Her hand shook.

And then, from behind Marcus, Maya whispered:

“Dad…”

He turned.

She was staring at the envelope on the phone.

Her voice was barely audible.

“I wasn’t supposed to give that to Jordan.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Then why did you?””

Maya opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, Vanessa suddenly lunged forward toward Marcus’s phone.

“DON’T!””

May you like

And that was the moment Marcus realized the envelope was never the danger.

The secret behind it was.
