Chapter 9: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

Nobody believed him.

Nobody could.

The words hung in the living room like something impossible.

Jordan stared at Elijah.

“No.””

Elijah didn’t look away.

“I wish I was wrong.””

Jordan shook his head.

“My mother died.””

Marcus watched his son.

The pain on Jordan’s face was different now.

Before, he had been afraid of learning the truth.

Now he was afraid the truth might actually exist.

Vanessa stood suddenly.

“Stop.””

Everyone turned.

Her voice cracked.

“Please stop.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at Jordan.

“Because he can’t handle this.””

Jordan laughed quietly.

“You still don’t get it.””

His eyes filled.

“I’ve spent my whole life handling things nobody explained.””

The sentence silenced her.

Marcus moved beside Jordan.

Not in front of him.

Beside him.

Because Jordan didn’t need someone to fight his battles.

He needed someone to stand with him.

Elijah looked at Marcus.

“There’s more.””

Marcus closed his eyes briefly.

“Of course there is.””

Elijah opened the folder again.

“I didn’t come here to hurt your family.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Then why?””

“Because someone else found her.””

Jordan looked up.

“Found who?””

Elijah answered softly.

“Your mother.””

Jordan froze.

The room seemed to shrink.

Maya whispered:

“Is she alive?””

Elijah looked at Marcus.

Then at Jordan.

“Yes.””

Jordan backed away.

“No.””

Elijah nodded.

“I know it sounds impossible.””

“No.””

Jordan shook his head harder.

“No, because if she was alive…”

His voice broke.

“She would have come back.””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the question everyone was thinking.

Marcus looked at Elijah.

“Why didn’t she?””

Elijah looked down.

“Because she believed you were protecting him.””

Marcus frowned.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“That makes no sense.””

Elijah sighed.

“It will.””

He pulled out another document.

“This was the last message she sent before she disappeared.””

Jordan looked terrified.

“I don’t want to read it.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You don’t have to.””

Jordan stared at the paper.

Then slowly reached for it.

“I need to know.””

His hand shook as he unfolded it.

Marcus watched his eyes move across the page.

At first, confusion.

Then disbelief.

Then pain.

“What does it say?”” Marcus asked gently.

Jordan didn’t answer.

A tear fell onto the paper.

Marcus looked at Elijah.

“What does it say?””

Elijah spoke quietly.

“She said she had to leave because Andre was coming after Jordan.””

Vanessa looked down.

Marcus looked at her.

“But she also said something else.””

“What?””

Elijah looked at Jordan.

“She said she trusted one person to keep him safe.””

Jordan looked up.

“Who?””

Elijah answered:

“You.””

Marcus froze.

“Me?””

Jordan stared at him.

Elijah nodded.

“Your mother believed Marcus would protect you.””

Marcus felt the weight of those words.

Because they should have comforted him.

Instead, they hurt.

Because he had spent ten years believing he failed.

Believing he couldn’t save Jordan’s past.

Believing he had only been able to save his future.

Jordan looked at Marcus.

“You knew her?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Elijah looked surprised.

“No?””

“No.””

Marcus turned to Vanessa.

“Did you?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Marcus felt anger rise again.

“You knew my wife’s secret.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I wasn’t your wife then.””

“But you knew.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me raise him without knowing?””

Her tears fell.

“I thought it was the only way.””

Marcus looked away.

For years, he had trusted Vanessa.

And now he realized she had been carrying an entire life before him.

A life connected to his son.

A life she had never shared.

Suddenly, Jordan spoke.

“Where is she?””

Everyone looked at him.

Elijah understood immediately.

“Jordan.””

“Where is my mother?””

Elijah hesitated.

Marcus saw it.

“There’s something else.””

Elijah nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Jordan’s face tightened.

“What?””

Elijah reached into the folder one last time.

He pulled out a small card.

An address.

A phone number.

And one name.

Jordan stared.

Because he recognized the name.

Not because he had met her.

But because he had heard it before.

From Vanessa.

Years ago.

When he was a child.

Marcus looked at the card.

Then at Vanessa.

Her face had gone completely white.

Jordan whispered:

“Why is her name here?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Marcus looked closer.

The name belonged to a woman everyone thought was gone.

A woman connected to Jordan’s past.

A woman who could destroy everything they believed.

Then Jordan looked at Vanessa.

“Why did you tell me she was dead?””

Vanessa broke down.

And before she could answer, the doorbell rang.

Everyone turned.

Marcus walked toward the door slowly.

His hand reached for the handle.

And on the other side was someone who should not have been there.

Someone who knew their family’s secret.

Someone who had been missing for ten years.

Marcus opened the door.

May you like

And a woman’s voice whispered:

“Jordan?””
