Chapter 14: The Truth Behind the Final Message

Marcus read the note again.

Every word.

Every line.

Every possibility.

Because the sentence changed everything.

*If Vanessa ever tells Marcus she betrayed him, don’t believe the whole story.*

Jordan looked at Renee.

“You wrote that?””

Renee shook her head.

“No.””

“Then when?””

Renee stared at the paper.

Her face changed.

“I wrote something similar.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

Renee took the note.

She examined it carefully.

“This isn’t the original.””

Jordan frowned.

“What?””

“This is a copy.””

Marcus looked confused.

“A copy of what?””

Renee looked at Vanessa.

“The letter I wrote.””

Vanessa froze.

Marcus immediately noticed.

“You’ve seen this before.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

Jordan stared.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because your mother gave it to me.””

The room went silent.

Marcus shook his head.

“When?””

“Before she left.””

Renee nodded slowly.

“I asked her to.””

Jordan looked between them.

“You two were working together?””

Renee looked at him.

“Yes.””

Jordan’s expression changed.

“Then why did you let me believe she abandoned me?””

Vanessa started crying.

“Because after your mother left, Andre came looking.””

“And?””

“I panicked.””

Marcus listened.

The truth was finally coming out.

Not cleanly.

Not easily.

But it was coming.

Renee explained.

“Your mother knew Andre would use anyone close to Jordan.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“So she asked you to protect him.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

Jordan looked hurt.

“But protecting me meant lying?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I thought if you hated me, you would stay away from the danger.””

Jordan shook his head.

“That makes no sense.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I know now.””

Marcus looked at the note.

“What did the original say?””

Renee hesitated.

Then:

“It said if Andre ever returned, Marcus needed to know everything.””

Marcus looked up.

“Everything?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Renee looked at Vanessa.

“Because she was afraid.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I thought telling you would destroy everything.””

Marcus laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because he was hurt.

“You don’t understand.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I thought I did.””

“No.””

Marcus looked around the room.

“You didn’t destroy this family by telling me the truth.””

He looked at the envelopes.

“The secrets did.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Jordan asked the question everyone avoided.

“Why did Andre send the video?””

Renee’s face became serious.

“Because he wants something.””

“What?””

“The original file.””

Marcus frowned.

“The one from the envelope?””

Renee nodded.

Jordan looked confused.

“What file?””

Vanessa answered quietly.

“The evidence your mother kept.””

“Evidence of what?””

Renee looked at him.

“Your father’s crimes.””

The words were heavy.

Marcus felt a chill.

Andre wasn’t trying to reveal the truth.

He was trying to find something.

Something hidden.

Something valuable.

“Where is it?”” Marcus asked.

Vanessa looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

Renee did.

Everyone turned.

“You know?””

Renee nodded.

“Your mother hid it.””

“Where?””

Renee looked toward the staircase.

Marcus noticed.

The staircase.

Again.

Everything returned there.

“The envelope.””

Jordan stared.

“What?””

“The one Vanessa gave Maya.””

Marcus understood.

The first envelope.

The one marked:

FOR JORDAN — DO NOT OPEN.

Jordan’s eyes widened.

“So the envelope wasn’t the evidence.””

“No.””

Renee shook her head.

“It was a warning.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“You knew.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you give it to Maya?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Because Andre was watching.””

The room froze.

Marcus felt his heart sink.

“Watching?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I needed him to think Jordan had the evidence.””

Jordan whispered:

“You used me.””

Vanessa looked devastated.

“Yes.””

“But why make me look guilty?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“Because I knew you would never leave the house.””

Marcus stared.

She continued.

“I knew Marcus would protect you.””

Jordan looked at Marcus.

The realization hit everyone.

The accusation.

The fall.

The envelope.

It was all a distraction.

Vanessa wasn’t trying to destroy Jordan.

She was trying to keep Andre away from him.

But she had done it in the worst possible way.

By making everyone believe Jordan was the threat.

Marcus sat down.

For the first time all day, he looked tired.

Not angry.

Just tired.

Then Renee spoke.

“There’s one thing you still don’t know.””

Marcus looked up.

“What?””

Renee pointed toward the phone.

“The security camera.””

Marcus frowned.

“What about it?””

Renee looked at the footage.

“Someone deleted part of it.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus checked the timeline.

The gap.

The missing minutes.

The moment before Vanessa gave Maya the envelope.

Someone had erased it.

Marcus looked at the screen.

Then slowly looked around the room.

Because if someone deleted the footage…

May you like

Someone had access.

And the security system showed exactly who.
