Chapter 11: The Truth Written in Her Letter

Jordan read the letter again.

Slowly.

Like he was afraid the words would disappear.

Nobody interrupted him.

Not Marcus.

Not Renee.

Not Vanessa.

Not even Maya.

The entire family waited.

Finally, Jordan lowered the paper.

“She wrote this before she left.””

Renee nodded.

“Yes.””

Jordan looked at her.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

Renee looked away.

“Because I wasn’t sure you would be safe.””

Jordan stared.

“Safe from what?””

Renee looked at Marcus.

Then Vanessa.

Then Jordan.

“From the truth.””

Marcus frowned.

“The truth doesn’t hurt people.””

Renee’s eyes were sad.

“Sometimes it does.””

Jordan looked down.

“What did she know?””

Renee sat slowly.

“She knew Andre would come looking for you.””

Marcus crossed his arms.

“Why?””

Renee’s voice became quiet.

“Because Jordan wasn’t just his son.””

The sentence confused everyone.

Jordan looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Renee took a breath.

“It means Andre saw Jordan as something he owned.””

Marcus felt anger rise.

“He was a child.””

“I know.””

“And you let him near him?””

“No.””

Renee’s voice became stronger.

“That’s why I left.””

Jordan looked at the letter.

“What else did she write?””

He hesitated.

Then read aloud.

“‘Jordan, if you ever read this, it means I failed to protect you the way I promised.’”

His voice broke.

Marcus looked away.

“‘But I need you to know one thing. None of this was because you weren’t loved.’”

Jordan stopped.

His eyes filled.

Renee covered her mouth.

Jordan continued.

“‘You were the best thing that ever happened to me.’”

The room became silent.

Jordan folded the paper.

Marcus watched him.

For ten years, Jordan had carried a wound nobody could see.

And now, for the first time, someone was telling him the wound was never his fault.

Maya quietly walked over.

She hugged him.

Jordan looked surprised.

Then he hugged her back.

Marcus watched his children.

The ones caught in secrets they never created.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

She was crying.

But Marcus couldn’t let that erase what happened.

“What about Andre?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“I don’t know where he is.””

Renee looked at her.

“You know more than that.””

Vanessa looked up.

The room froze.

Marcus noticed.

“You two have talked.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

Jordan stepped back.

“You talked to him?””

Vanessa nodded.

“When?””

“Before we moved here.””

Marcus stared.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at Jordan.

“Because he was looking for you.””

Jordan’s face went pale.

“And you helped him?””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

“No, I tried to stop him.””

Marcus watched her carefully.

“You never told me.””

“I thought I could handle it.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You thought you could handle someone dangerous alone?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.””

Jordan laughed quietly.

“Everyone keeps making choices for me.””

Nobody argued.

Because again, he was right.

Marcus looked at Renee.

“Why now?””

Renee looked toward the window.

“Because Andre found me.””

The room went silent.

Marcus felt the shift immediately.

“When?””

“Last week.””

Jordan looked alarmed.

“Is he here?””

“No.””

Renee hesitated.

“But he knows where you are.””

Lily moved closer to Marcus.

Maya grabbed her hand.

Marcus’s protective instincts took over.

He looked around the house.

The doors.

The windows.

The cameras.

Everything.

Then he looked at the phone.

The security footage.

The envelope.

The message.

Everything suddenly connected.

“The staircase.””

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus continued.

“The accusation.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“You think…”

“I think someone wanted Jordan removed from this house.””

Jordan stared.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at the envelope.

Because suddenly he understood.

The fall.

The lie.

The envelope.

They weren’t random.

Someone was trying to create chaos.

Someone wanted Jordan away.

But why?

Renee slowly stood.

“There’s something you need to know.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

She reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small USB drive.

Jordan stared.

“What is that?””

Renee looked at Marcus.

“This is the reason Andre came back.””

Marcus took it.

“What’s on it?””

Renee’s face became serious.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

She looked at Jordan.

“Proof that the person you should have been afraid of was never the person everyone blamed.””

Marcus frowned.

“Then who?””

Renee didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked at Vanessa.

May you like

And Vanessa immediately looked terrified.

Because she knew exactly what was on that drive.
