Chapter 13: The Person Behind the Lie
The video ended.
But Andre’s final words remained.
*The person who betrayed Jordan the most is still living in that house.*
Nobody spoke.
The laptop screen went dark.
The reflection of the family stared back at them.
A father.
A mother.
Children.
And secrets that had finally become too heavy to hide.
Marcus slowly looked around the room.
The question was no longer who had lied.
Everyone had.
The question was why.
Jordan stood completely still.
His eyes moved from one person to another.
“Who is he talking about?””
Nobody answered.
Jordan laughed quietly.
“Of course.””
He shook his head.
“Of course nobody answers.””
Marcus stepped toward him.
“Jordan.””
“No.””
Jordan backed away.
“I’m tired of this.””
His voice cracked.
“I’m tired of everyone looking at me like I’m something that needs to be protected.””
Marcus felt the words hit him.
Because Jordan wasn’t angry.
He was exhausted.
“I just want the truth.””
Marcus nodded.
“You deserve it.””
Jordan looked at him.
“Then give it to me.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She knew.
He could see it.
Whatever Andre was talking about, Vanessa knew.
“Vanessa.””
She closed her eyes.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Find out what?””
Vanessa sat down slowly.
For the first time, she looked smaller.
Not like someone controlling a situation.
Like someone who had finally run out of places to hide.
“I made a mistake.””
Jordan stared.
“What mistake?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“The biggest one of my life.””
Renee stepped forward.
“Tell him.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You don’t get to tell me what to do.””
Renee’s expression hardened.
“You had ten years.””
The words landed.
Vanessa looked down.
Then she whispered:
“I knew Andre was coming back.””
Marcus froze.
Jordan stared.
“You knew?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I received messages.””
“When?””
“Months ago.””
Marcus felt anger rise.
“You knew someone dangerous was looking for him, and you said nothing?””
“I was trying to handle it.””
“No.””
Marcus’s voice became firm.
“You were hiding it.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I was afraid.””
“Of Andre?””
She hesitated.
Then:
“Yes.””
Marcus noticed.
A hesitation.
A fraction of a second.
But it mattered.
“Only Andre?””
Vanessa looked away.
Nobody moved.
Finally, she said:
“No.””
Jordan’s face changed.
“Who else?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Your uncle.””
Jordan stared.
“My uncle is involved?””
“Yes.””
Marcus frowned.
“But you said he wanted money.””
“He did.””
“Then why are you afraid of him?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Renee did.
“Because he wasn’t working alone.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
Renee looked at Vanessa.
“She never told you.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Stop.””
Marcus turned.
“Told me what?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“The person helping Andre…”
She stopped.
Marcus waited.
“The person who gave him information…”
Another pause.
Then:
“It was someone inside the family.””
Jordan looked confused.
“My family?””
Vanessa nodded.
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at him.
And the expression on her face terrified him.
Because she wasn’t looking at Jordan.
She was looking at herself.
“I helped him once.””
Jordan went completely still.
“What?””
Vanessa cried.
“Only once.””
Marcus stared.
“Explain.””
She wiped her face.
“Before we got married, before you knew everything, Andre found me.””
Renee closed her eyes.
Marcus looked between them.
“You knew Andre before me?””
“Yes.””
Jordan whispered:
“How?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because I was trying to find your mother.””
The answer shocked everyone.
Renee stared.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because I thought she abandoned you.””
Marcus frowned.
“And then?””
“And then I found out she was running.””
“Running from Andre.””
“Yes.””
“So why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“Because I made a deal.””
Jordan stepped back.
“What deal?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I told Andre where you were.””
The room stopped.
Marcus felt like he had been punched.
Jordan’s face went empty.
Not angry.
Not sad.
Empty.
“You what?””
Vanessa immediately cried.
“I didn’t know he would hurt you.””
Jordan stared.
“You gave him my location.””
“I thought I could control it.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“You didn’t control anything.””
Vanessa looked away.
“You’re right.””
Jordan’s eyes filled.
“All these years…”
He couldn’t finish.
Marcus stepped beside him.
But Jordan didn’t move closer.
He was too hurt.
Renee looked at Vanessa.
“You put him in danger.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.””
“Then why did you stay?””
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
The answer was painful.
“Because Marcus gave me a second chance.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
The truth hurt.
Because part of him remembered the woman he loved.
The woman who helped raise his children.
But another part saw every secret.
Every lie.
Every decision made without him.
Then Lily quietly spoke.
“Dad.””
Marcus looked down.
She was holding something.
A small piece of paper.
“Where did you get that?””
Lily looked nervous.
“It was under the couch.””
Marcus took it.
It was folded.
Old.
He opened it.
Only one sentence was written.
A sentence that changed everything.
*“If Vanessa ever tells Marcus she betrayed him, don’t believe the whole story.””*
Marcus looked up.
Everyone stared.
Because the note wasn’t written by Vanessa.
It wasn’t written by Andre.
It wasn’t written by Renee.
At the bottom was a name.
A name Jordan recognized.
May you like
Jordan whispered:
“That’s my mother’s handwriting.””
