Chapter 10: The Daughter Elena Never Told Me About

“She was Elena's.””

Daniel's words hung in the kitchen.

I stared at him.

“That makes no sense. Elena had one child. Nia.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That's what the records say.””

“What do you mean?””

He opened the photograph he'd been holding and turned it toward me.

It showed Elena standing beside a hospital bassinet. She was exhausted, pale, and smiling weakly.

But there were two bassinets.

Two newborn babies.

I leaned closer.

“Where did you get this?””

“From Dad's safe. He gave it to me before the accident.””

I looked at the second bassinet.

There was a small handwritten card attached to it.

*BABY GIRL — CARTER.*

My hands began to shake.

“Are you telling me Elena had twins?””

Daniel nodded.

“And Vanessa helped conceal one of them.””

I looked at Rachel.

She was crying.

“You knew?””

“No,” she whispered.

“I swear I didn't.””

Daniel continued.

“Elena was carrying two babies. The doctors knew early in the pregnancy, but complications developed. One baby was delivered first. The second was born several hours later.””

I struggled to process it.

“Why wasn't I told?””

“You were.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Dad said he called you from the hospital that night. You were driving home. He told you Elena had delivered two girls.””

I remembered that night.

I remembered the call.

I remembered my father saying something about two little miracles.

But I'd been distracted by a business emergency. I'd told him we'd talk when I arrived.

When I finally reached the hospital, Elena was holding Nia.

Nobody mentioned another baby.

“What happened to the second child?””

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

“Vanessa claimed the second baby had died.””

My chest tightened.

“Claimed?””

“The hospital issued a death certificate. But there was no burial record.””

I stood.

“That's impossible.””

“Dad discovered the discrepancy six months later.””

I turned toward him.

“Why didn't he tell me?””

“Because the attorney warned him that the documents were legally sealed.””

“Which attorney?””

“Thomas Reed.””

I slammed my hand against the table.

“Of course.””

Daniel nodded.

“Dad believed the second child had been placed with another family. He hired a private investigator, but before he could find her, he died.””

I stared at the photograph.

Two bassinets.

Two daughters.

One missing.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa.

*You don't know what Elena did. She gave away her own daughter and made me promise to keep quiet.*

I read it aloud.

Rachel looked horrified.

Daniel shook his head.

“She's trying to confuse you.””

I called Vanessa.

She answered on the first ring.

“What do you want?”” she demanded.

“The truth about the second baby.””

Silence.

Then she said, “Your wife wasn't the woman you thought she was.””

“Did Elena give away her daughter?””

“She made a decision.””

“What decision?””

“She wanted to protect Nia.””

“And what happened to the other child?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I was supposed to raise her.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She was supposed to be mine.””

I gripped the phone.

“Explain.””

“After the delivery, Elena was too sick to care for two babies. She asked me to take the second child temporarily.””

“Temporarily?””

“Yes.””

“Where is she now?””

“I don't know.””

I heard movement on the other end.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Marcus, there's something else. Elena didn't just hide one baby. She changed both birth records.””

The call disconnected.

I immediately called back.

No answer.

Daniel stood.

“We need to go to the warehouse.””

Rachel grabbed her coat.

“Now?””

“Before Vanessa or Thomas gets there.””

I looked at Nia.

She had been standing near the doorway, holding the old photograph.

“Dad?””

I walked toward her.

“Sweetheart, I need to find out something about your family.””

She looked at the two babies.

“Do I have a sister?””

I knelt.

“I don't know yet.””

“Is she alive?””

I couldn't lie.

“I hope so.””

Nia looked down at the picture.

Then she asked the question that nearly broke me.

“If Mom had another baby, why did she only tell me about myself?””

I held her.

“Because adults sometimes make decisions they think will protect children. Sometimes they get those decisions wrong.””

She nodded slowly.

“Are you going to find her?””

“Yes.””

I kissed her forehead.

“I promise.””

We drove to the warehouse just before midnight.

The building stood at the end of an industrial road, surrounded by rusted fencing and overgrown grass.

Daniel unlocked the main entrance.

Inside, everything smelled of dust and old paper.

Rachel held a flashlight while I searched for locker 317.

We found it behind a row of metal cabinets.

The silver key fit perfectly.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a wooden box, a thick envelope, and a small cassette recorder.

I opened the envelope first.

The original will was there.

My father's signature was unmistakable.

But the final section contained something I hadn't expected.

A trust established for two children.

*NIA CARTER AND HER SISTER, SUBJECT TO CONFIRMATION OF IDENTITY.*

I stared at the document.

There was another page.

It listed the names of two newborn girls.

The first was Nia.

The second was identified as *LILY CARTER*.

I looked at Daniel.

“Lily?””

He nodded slowly.

“That was the name Dad wanted.””

I picked up the cassette recorder.

There was a handwritten label.

For Marcus. Play only when you find the truth.

I pressed the button.

My father's voice filled the empty warehouse.

“Son, if you're listening to this, then I failed to protect you from something I should have stopped years ago.””

I closed my eyes.

“I need you to understand that Elena didn't abandon her second daughter. She was forced to make a choice because someone threatened to take both children away.””

A pause.

Then my father's voice grew quieter.

“And the person responsible wasn't Vanessa.””

Daniel stepped closer.

The recording continued.

“It was someone who had been part of our family long before Elena married you.””

The tape clicked.

My father's final words were:

“Marcus, your mother knows where Lily is.””

I stopped breathing.

My mother had died eleven years earlier.

But according to the recording, she had known everything.

And the last page in the envelope contained a handwritten address.

A residential home.

With a name beneath it.
