Chapter 8: My Sister's Hidden Promise

I stared at Rachel.

“Explain that.””

She placed the glass on the table.

Her fingers were trembling.

“I didn't mean you were dangerous, Marcus.””

“Then what did Elena mean?””

Rachel looked toward Nia.

“Can we talk privately?””

“No.””

“Marcus, please.””

“I'm done with private conversations. Every secret in this family has been used against my daughter.””

Rachel lowered her eyes.

“Then let me tell you everything.””

Nia was sitting on the sofa, holding Elena's old photograph.

I knelt beside her.

“Sweetheart, why don't you go upstairs with Daniel for a little while?””

She looked at my brother.

“Will you stay with me?””

Daniel nodded.

“Of course.””

After they left, I turned back to Rachel.

“Start talking.””

She took a deep breath.

“Six years ago, Elena called me from the hospital. She was frightened. She said Vanessa had been visiting her when you weren't there.””

I frowned.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Elena made me promise not to.””

“What was Vanessa doing?””

“Pressuring her to sign documents. She wanted control over Nia's trust and wanted to become her legal guardian.””

I sat down.

“Why didn't Elena just tell me?””

Rachel's eyes filled with tears.

“She tried. But Vanessa had something on her.””

“What?””

Rachel looked at the floor.

“Your father.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Daniel already told me about the medication.””

Rachel nodded.

“There's more. Vanessa had discovered that your father had secretly changed his will. He had left a separate inheritance for Nia.””

“How much?””

“Another two million dollars.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“Your father knew about the fertility arrangement. He had spoken with Elena and agreed that Nia would be his granddaughter, regardless of her biological parentage.””

I remembered the photograph of my father in the hospital.

He had been holding a newborn baby.

I had assumed it was Nia.

“Why didn't I know?””

“Because your father wanted to tell you himself.””

Rachel wiped her cheeks.

“Vanessa found out about the inheritance. She threatened to expose Daniel's involvement in the fertility treatment unless your father transferred control of the money.””

“Daniel's involvement wasn't illegal.””

“No. But Daniel was in trouble for something else.””

“What?””

Rachel hesitated.

“He had been involved in a serious financial dispute with a business partner. There were allegations of fraud. He was afraid the truth would destroy his career.””

I thought about the argument we'd had before his supposed death.

The business deal.

The accusations.

The anger.

“So Vanessa used that against him?””

“She threatened to tell the police that Daniel had stolen the embryo records and manipulated the fertility procedure.””

“Had he?””

“No.””

Rachel looked directly at me.

“Your brother made mistakes, Marcus. But he didn't steal your daughter.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“And you became her guardian?””

“Elena signed the documents because she knew Vanessa might try to take Nia if something happened to her.””

“Why didn't you take Nia after Elena died?””

Rachel's expression changed.

“I tried.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“The day after the funeral, I went to the attorney's office with the original guardianship papers. Vanessa was already there.””

My hands tightened.

“What happened?””

“She produced another agreement. One that supposedly had your signature and stated you had agreed to Vanessa becoming Nia's temporary guardian.””

“The forged agreement.””

Rachel nodded.

“The attorney refused to accept it. But Vanessa threatened to challenge everything in court. She claimed Elena had been mentally unstable and that the guardianship papers were invalid.””

“Then why didn't you fight?””

“I did.””

Rachel began crying.

“For eight months, I fought. I spent my savings. I hired lawyers.

I collected statements. Then Vanessa threatened to expose something about Daniel that could have sent him to prison.””

I stared at her.

“You knew he was alive?””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“I found out three months after the accident.””

I stood abruptly.

“You knew?””

“Marcus—”

“You knew my brother was alive, and you let me grieve him?””

“I thought I was protecting him!””

“Everyone keeps saying that!””

My voice cracked.

“Everyone was protecting someone. Who was protecting me?””

Rachel couldn't answer.

I walked to the window.

Outside, the streetlights illuminated the driveway.

For years, I'd believed I was rebuilding my life after losing Elena and Daniel.

Instead, I'd been living inside a story everyone else had already written.

Rachel came closer.

“Elena left something else with me.””

She opened her handbag and removed a small wooden box.

I recognized it immediately.

It had belonged to Elena.

She used to keep her wedding ring, photographs, and handwritten notes inside.

Rachel placed it on the table.

“I was supposed to give this to you when Nia turned eighteen.””

“Why?””

“Because Elena wanted Nia to be old enough to understand the truth.””

I opened the box.

Inside were several photographs, a folded letter, and a small silver key.

The letter had my name on it.

Marcus,

I hope you've had a chance to be happy again. I hope Nia has grown up surrounded by love.

If Rachel has given you this box early, then something went wrong.

I swallowed.

The next paragraph made my heart pound.

There is one person I haven't mentioned. Someone who was present when Nia was born. Someone who helped Vanessa access the hospital records.

I turned the page.

That person was not a doctor. He was not a lawyer.

He was someone you trusted enough to give a key to your house.

I looked at the silver key.

Rachel whispered, “I don't know what it opens.””

I examined it.

There was a tiny number engraved near the handle.

*317.*

I turned the letter over.

Elena had written one final instruction.

Go to locker 317 at the old family storage facility. Do not go alone. And Marcus, if you find what I left there, you will finally understand why Vanessa was so determined to keep Nia away from everyone.

I looked at Rachel.

“Where is the storage facility?””

She swallowed.

“Your father's old warehouse.””

I remembered the building.

It had been closed since his death.

Nobody had entered it in years.

I put the letter back into the box.

Then I heard footsteps on the stairs.

Nia appeared, holding Daniel's hand.

“Dad?””

I turned.

“What's wrong, sweetheart?””

She looked frightened.

“Uncle Daniel told me something.””

I glanced at my brother.

“What?””

Nia took a breath.

“He said Mom Elena didn't want me to live with Vanessa because Vanessa had already hurt another baby.””

Nobody moved.

I looked at Daniel.

May you like

He closed his eyes.

“Marcus,” he whispered, “there's something I haven't told you about the night Nia was born.””
