Chapter 7: The Voicemail From My Dead Wife

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

My daughter's phone displayed Elena's name.

The same contact photograph Nia had kept since she was six years old. Elena smiling in the garden, her dark hair blowing across her face.

But Elena had been dead for six years.

“Dad?”” Nia whispered.

I swallowed.

“It's okay, sweetheart.””

“Is Mom calling me?””

I looked at Rachel.

She was staring at the screen too.

“Don't answer it,” she whispered.

The call had already ended.

A voicemail notification appeared beneath the missed call.

I tapped it.

A woman's voice filled the room.

“Hello, sweetheart. If you're hearing this, then something happened that I was afraid of.””

My knees weakened.

Elena.

It was unquestionably Elena.

The slight rasp in her voice. The gentle way she pronounced Nia's name. The little breath she always took before saying something important.

“Mom?”” Nia whispered.

The recording continued.

“Nia, my precious girl, I need you to remember something. None of this is your fault. Not the arguments, not the secrets, and not anything Vanessa has told you.””

I looked toward the doorway.

Vanessa was standing there.

Her face had gone completely white.

Elena's voice continued.

“I wanted to tell you everything myself, but I ran out of time. If Vanessa is still in your life when you hear this, please don't believe everything she says about your father. And please, whatever happens, don't let anyone take you away from him.””

The recording ended.

Nia began crying.

“Dad, is that really Mom?””

I pulled her into my arms.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

“But how?””

I had no answer.

My phone rang.

The number was unfamiliar.

I answered.

“Who is this?””

A woman's voice responded.

“Marcus? My name is Laura Bennett. I worked with Elena at the fertility clinic.””

I glanced at Dr. Harrison, who had just entered the room.

“Why are you calling?””

“Because the scheduled message was successfully delivered.””

I stared at the phone.

“What scheduled message?””

“Your wife arranged for several recordings to be delivered under specific circumstances. The first was triggered when someone accessed Nia's old medical profile.””

“When?””

“About ten minutes ago.””

I looked at Nia's phone.

“Who accessed it?””

Laura hesitated.

“Someone using Vanessa's credentials.””

I turned toward my wife.

She immediately shook her head.

“I didn't access anything.””

Laura continued.

“Mr. Carter, there's something you need to understand. Elena was afraid someone would try to change Nia's identity after her death. She arranged safeguards.””

“What identity?””

“I can't discuss the full details over the phone. But I have the original birth records, including the document your wife mentioned.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was standing behind Dr. Harrison, listening.

“Where are you?””

“I'm in Boston. I can meet you tomorrow.””

“Why not today?””

“Because there's someone else who needs to be present.””

“Who?””

Laura lowered her voice.

“Your daughter's original guardian.””

The call ended.

I looked at Daniel.

“Who is she talking about?””

He shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“She's lying.””

I turned.

“Why?””

“Laura Bennett was never authorized to keep those records.””

“Then why does she have them?””

“Because she stole them!””

Dr. Harrison finally spoke.

“Vanessa, stop.””

She turned on him.

“You don't get to tell me what to do.””

“I've spent six years pretending I didn't know what happened. I'm finished.””

He reached into his briefcase and pulled out a sealed document.

“Elena gave this to me two days before she died. She specifically instructed me not to release it until Marcus discovered the financial fraud.””

I took it.

The envelope had my name written across the front.

Inside was a letter.

Marcus,

I know you love Nia. I know you'll protect her. But there is one truth I couldn't bring myself to tell you while I was alive.

When Vanessa agreed to help us have a child, she made a condition. She wanted to remain involved in Nia's life, regardless of what happened to me.

I agreed because I believed she loved me.

I was wrong about what she wanted.

I stopped reading.

Daniel moved closer.

“What else?””

I continued.

Vanessa was not acting alone. Someone in our family helped her alter the records. Someone who had access to our father's estate and the original hospital documents.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked equally confused.

The final paragraph made my blood run cold.

If you ever meet the person who claims to be Nia's legal guardian, ask them to show you the original adoption order. There was never supposed to be one.

I lowered the letter.

Vanessa was watching me.

“What does it say?”” she asked.

I didn't answer.

Instead, I called the police.

An officer arrived forty minutes later to take statements regarding the forged documents, the basement confinement, and the suspected financial abuse.

Vanessa was informed that she could not remove Nia from the house while the investigation was underway.

She was furious.

“You're destroying this family!”” she shouted at me.

I stood beside Nia.

“You did that when you made her afraid to come home.””

She grabbed her coat.

Before leaving, she turned toward my daughter.

“You'll regret believing him.””

Nia flinched.

I stepped in front of her.

“Don't speak to her again.””

Vanessa walked out.

For the first time in six years, the house was quiet.

But the quiet didn't last.

At 9:42 p.m., Laura sent me an email.

The subject line read:

*ELENA'S ORIGINAL BIRTH RECORDS — URGENT.*

I opened the attachment.

There were three documents.

The first confirmed that Daniel had provided genetic material.

The second identified Elena as Nia's birth mother.

The third was an original guardianship agreement.

I read the names carefully.

Then I read them again.

The appointed guardian wasn't Vanessa.

It wasn't Daniel.

It wasn't me.

It was Rachel.

My sister.

I slowly turned toward the hallway.

Rachel was standing there, holding a glass of water.

She saw the document on my screen.

Her hand began to shake.

“Marcus,” she whispered.

I stood.

“Why are you listed as Nia's guardian?””

Rachel looked at Nia.

Then at me.

May you like

And she said something that changed everything.

“Because Elena knew I was the only person in this family who could protect her from her own father.””
