Chapter 14: The Man Who Stole Two Childhoods

Lily's apartment door was hanging open when we arrived.

A lamp lay shattered on the floor.

Her handbag had been thrown across the room.

Daniel was already inside, checking the bedroom.

“She's not here!””

My heart dropped.

Detective Collins moved quickly.

“Secure the building. Check the exits. Nobody leaves.””

I found Lily's phone beneath the kitchen table.

Beside it was a torn piece of paper.

Three words had been written across it.

*WAREHOUSE. LOCKER 317.*

I showed it to Collins.

She frowned.

“Is that where you found the original documents?””

“Yes.””

She immediately radioed the other officers.

“We're moving.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Thomas wants us there.””

“I know.””

“It's a trap.””

“Then we'll bring the police.””

We drove back to the warehouse.

This time, we didn't enter through the main door.

Detective Collins positioned officers around the building while two others checked the loading entrance.

I stayed beside Daniel.

The warehouse was dark.

Then we heard a voice.

“Marcus.””

Thomas stepped out from behind the metal cabinets.

He wore the same expensive suit I'd seen at my father's funeral.

His expression was calm.

Almost disappointed.

“You shouldn't have come.””

“Where is Lily?””

Thomas sighed.

“She is safe.””

“Where?””

“Somewhere she can finally understand what your family did to her.””

I moved forward.

“Bring her here.””

Thomas smiled faintly.

“You still think you can give orders.””

Daniel stepped beside me.

“You stole her identity.””

“I protected her.””

“You falsified her records.””

“I corrected a mistake.””

“You destroyed our family.””

Thomas's expression hardened.

“Your family destroyed itself long before I touched a document.””

He gestured toward locker 317.

“Your father wanted to control everything. He wanted Elena to have children who would keep the Carter bloodline intact. He wanted the trust protected. He wanted the family business protected.””

“By stealing a baby?””

“By making decisions no one else had the courage to make.””

I stared at him.

“Where is Lily?””

Thomas ignored me.

“Your father knew Elena was uncomfortable with the second transfer. He knew she might refuse. So he arranged it quietly.””

“Did Elena know?””

“Not until after the birth.””

“And when she found out?””

“She wanted both children.””

Thomas laughed without humor.

“Your father refused. He believed the second child would expose the arrangement. He said the family couldn't survive another scandal.””

I stepped closer.

“So you helped him take Lily away.””

“I found a family willing to raise her.””

“You found your own family.””

Thomas looked at me.

“Yes.””

The words landed like a punch.

“Lily was raised under your roof.””

“My wife loved her.””

“You let her believe her mother abandoned her.””

Thomas's jaw tightened.

“Because Elena made a choice.””

“What choice?””

“She threatened to expose Robert. She said she would take both children and tell everyone what he'd done.””

I shook my head.

“So you punished her.””

“I protected the family.””

“You stole her daughter.””

Thomas looked away.

For a moment, his expression seemed almost human.

Then he reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.

“Your father's original DNA report.””

He tossed it onto a table.

I opened it.

The report confirmed what Vanessa had said.

Both girls were genetically connected to me.

But another page was attached.

A handwritten note from my father.

If Elena refuses to cooperate, Thomas will arrange for Lily to be raised separately. Marcus must never know until the girls are old enough to understand.

I stared at the words.

“Why?””

Thomas answered quietly.

“Because Robert believed you would never forgive him.””

“You're right.””

“And because he believed Elena would eventually tell you.””

I looked up.

“Did she?””

Thomas nodded.

“She came to my office three days before she died. She had the original birth records. She wanted to take Lily home.””

“What happened?””

“She left.””

“Why?””

“Because she was threatened.””

“By whom?””

Thomas didn't answer.

Detective Collins stepped into the open doorway.

“Thomas Reed, you're under arrest.””

Thomas turned.

For the first time, fear crossed his face.

Then he smiled.

“You're too late.””

A door slammed somewhere behind us.

I turned.

A figure emerged from the shadows.

Vanessa.

She was holding Lily by the arm.

Lily's face was pale, but she was standing.

“Let her go!”” I shouted.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I'm trying to save her.””

“By kidnapping her?””

“Thomas promised me the money. He promised my girls would never have to struggle.””

Lily pulled against her grip.

“You lied to me!””

Vanessa's face twisted.

“I gave you a home.””

“You gave me a false name!””

“I raised you!””

“You told me my mother didn't want me!””

Vanessa's grip tightened.

Detective Collins raised her hand.

“Vanessa, let go of the young woman.””

Vanessa began crying.

“I didn't know how else to survive.””

I took a slow step forward.

“Madison and Chloe are safe. Nia is safe. You can stop.””

She shook her head.

“You don't understand. Thomas said the trust would be divided. He said I'd lose everything.””

“You already stole the money.””

“I needed it!””

“You stole from a twelve-year-old girl.””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

Then toward the warehouse exit.

For one terrifying second, I thought she might run.

But Lily did something unexpected.

She stepped forward and pulled her arm free.

“I'm not yours,” she said.

Vanessa froze.

Lily moved toward me.

I reached for her, but she stopped just short of my arms.

She was crying.

I didn't force a hug.

I simply stood there.

“I'm sorry,” I whispered.

She shook her head.

“Don't apologize for something you didn't know.””

Then she looked at Thomas.

“You told me my mother gave me away.””

Thomas said nothing.

“You told me my father never wanted me.””

His expression remained cold.

“You told me I was lucky to have your family.””

Lily wiped her face.

“I wasn't lucky. I was stolen.””

Detective Collins ordered the officers forward.

Thomas was handcuffed first.

Vanessa followed.

As they were led away, she turned toward me.

“Marcus, please. Tell Madison and Chloe I love them.””

I looked at her.

“You can tell them yourself. When the court allows it.””

Then she was gone.

Lily finally stepped into my arms.

She was trembling.

I held her carefully, as if she might disappear.

“I don't know how to be your daughter,” she whispered.

“You don't have to figure that out tonight.””

She pulled back.

“Can I see Nia?””

I smiled through my tears.

“She has been waiting for you.””

My phone rang.

Rachel.

“Marcus, bring Lily home.””

I frowned.

“What happened?””

Rachel's voice shook.

“Nia's been asking about her sister all evening.””

Then she added:

“There's something else. The doctor called. Nia's screening results came back.””

My smile faded.

“What did they find?””

Rachel paused.

“They want to speak with you immediately.””

I looked at Lily.

The truth had finally brought our family together.

May you like

But it had also revealed something none of us had prepared for.

One of my daughters might be seriously ill.
