Chapter 9: The Baby Who Disappeared

Daniel sat at the kitchen table.

He looked like a man preparing to confess to a crime.

I placed a glass of water in front of him.

“Talk.””

He didn't touch it.

“Twelve years ago, Elena gave birth to Nia at St. Mary's Hospital. But there was another baby in the maternity ward that night.””

I frowned.

“Another baby?””

“A little girl. She was born prematurely. Her mother had complications, and she was transferred to intensive care.””

“What does that have to do with Vanessa?””

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

“She was at the hospital.””

“Why?””

“To visit Elena.””

I stared at him.

“Keep going.””

“Vanessa had been helping with the fertility arrangements. She knew the clinic's staff, and she had access to some of the records.””

“Why would she have access?””

“Because she had been working as a temporary administrative assistant at the clinic.””

I looked at Rachel.

She nodded.

“That's true. I found her employment records.””

Daniel continued.

“After Nia was born, Elena noticed something strange. The hospital bracelet on Nia's wrist had been changed.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“Elena noticed that the identification number didn't match the one on her admission paperwork.””

I stood.

“Are you telling me someone switched my baby?””

“No. Nia was still Nia. But someone had changed the records to make it appear that another woman had been present during the delivery.””

“Who?””

“Vanessa.””

I shook my head.

“Why?””

“Because she wanted to establish a legal connection to Nia before Elena died.””

I looked toward my daughter.

Nia was sitting quietly on the sofa, listening.

I walked over and lowered my voice.

“Sweetheart, why don't you go upstairs and watch something?””

She shook her head.

“I want to know.””

I hesitated.

Then I nodded.

She deserved the truth.

Daniel opened his jacket and removed a small hospital bracelet.

It was faded and yellowed with age.

The name printed on it was barely visible.

*BABY CARTER — FEMALE.*

I stared at it.

“Where did you get that?””

“Elena gave it to me.””

“Why?””

“Because she found it in Vanessa's purse.””

I looked at Vanessa's name on the old documents.

“What was she planning?””

Daniel leaned forward.

“She wanted to use the bracelet as evidence that she'd given birth to Nia.””

I stared at him.

“But the genetic test says she's Nia's biological mother.””

“Yes. She donated the egg. But she didn't carry the pregnancy.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“So she wanted to pretend she had given birth?””

“Exactly.””

Rachel shook her head.

“Why would anyone go that far?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Because it would make the guardianship case easier. Vanessa could claim she was Nia's biological mother and argue that Elena had only been a surrogate.””

I felt sick.

“Was Elena aware?””

“Yes. She discovered the altered records and confronted Vanessa.””

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at Nia.

“Your mother told Vanessa she would report her. Vanessa threatened to destroy the original documents.””

Nia's voice was small.

“Did Mom Elena fight her?””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“Every day, sweetheart.””

Nia looked down at her hands.

“Did she win?””

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Then he said, “She made sure you were safe. That's what mattered to her.””

I wanted to believe him.

But the more we uncovered, the more questions appeared.

I picked up Elena's letter.

The key was still in my pocket.

“I'm going to the warehouse.””

Rachel stood.

“I'm coming.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not tonight.””

I turned.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa knows we've found the documents. If she discovers we're going to the warehouse, she'll try to get there first.””

I stared at him.

“How would she know?””

He looked toward the front window.

“Because she's been watching this house.””

I walked over and pulled the curtain aside.

The street was empty.

Daniel continued.

“Someone has been following me for weeks. I thought it was Vanessa's lawyer.””

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

My phone rang.

Officer Bennett.

I answered.

“Marcus Carter.””

“Mr. Carter, we need you to come to the station tomorrow morning. We've received additional information concerning your wife's financial records.””

“What information?””

“Several transfers were made from Nia's trust to an account registered to a person named Thomas Reed.””

I frowned.

“Who is Thomas Reed?””

There was a pause.

“That's what we're trying to establish.””

Daniel suddenly stood.

“Ask her when the account was opened.””

I repeated the question.

Officer Bennett checked something.

“Six years ago. Three days before Elena's death.””

My stomach tightened.

“Can you send me the account documents?””

“We'll need your formal statement first.””

“Understood.””

I ended the call.

Daniel looked pale.

“What is it?””

“Thomas Reed.””

He sat down again.

“That's impossible.””

“Who is he?””

Daniel stared at the table.

“Dad's former attorney.””

I felt a chill.

“The same attorney who handled the inheritance?””

He nodded.

“Thomas knew about the trust. He knew about the fertility agreement. And he was the person who prepared the guardianship papers.””

I remembered Elena's warning.

Someone we trusted enough to give a key to our house.

“Does he still work in the area?””

Daniel nodded.

“He retired shortly after Dad died.””

Rachel picked up her phone.

“I'll look him up.””

She searched for several seconds.

Then her expression changed.

“What?””

She turned the screen toward us.

A recent photograph showed an older man standing outside a courthouse.

Beneath it was a news headline:

*RETIRED ATTORNEY THOMAS REED RETURNS TO FAMILY TRUST CASE AFTER SIX-YEAR ABSENCE.*

I read the article.

The date was yesterday.

He had reappeared just as we started uncovering Elena's records.

Then another notification arrived.

This time, it was an email.

The sender was Thomas Reed.

The subject line read:

*A FINAL WARNING FROM YOUR FATHER'S ATTORNEY.*

I opened it.

There was only one paragraph.

Mr. Carter, I strongly advise you to stop investigating your wife's death. Your father made a promise twelve years ago, and if you open locker 317, you will discover why he was willing to sacrifice everything to keep it.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at the screen.

“Marcus,” he whispered, “I know what locker 317 contains.””

“What?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Your father's original will.””

I frowned.

“We already have his will.””

“No,” Daniel replied.

“We have the version Thomas Reed wanted you to see.””

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small folded photograph.

It showed my father standing beside Elena.

Both were smiling.

On the back, Dad had written:

The truth belongs to the child, not the people fighting over her.

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father changed his will the day before he died.””

I felt my pulse quicken.

“What did he leave Nia?””

Daniel's answer was barely audible.

“Everything.””

Then my phone rang again.

A message appeared from Vanessa.

*I know you're planning to go to the warehouse. Don't open locker 317. If you do, you'll learn what Elena did to the other baby.*

I stared at the screen.

The other baby.

The little girl from the maternity ward.

I looked at Daniel.

He slowly shook his head.

“Marcus, I think we've misunderstood something.””

“What?””

He leaned closer.

“The baby who disappeared from that hospital wasn't Vanessa's.””

May you like

He paused.

“She was Elena's.””
