Chapter 6: The Brother Who Came Back From the Dead
I opened the front door.
Daniel stopped at the bottom of the steps.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
He looked older than the man I remembered.
His hair was almost completely gray. A scar ran from his left temple toward his cheek. His shoulders were narrower, and he leaned slightly to one side as he walked.
But his eyes were the same.
“Hello, Marcus.””
My mouth went dry.
“You're alive.””
He nodded.
“I'm sorry.””
I laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because the alternative was falling apart.
“I buried you.””
“I know.””
“I stood beside an empty coffin while people told me my brother was dead.””
Daniel lowered his head.
“I know.””
“Why?””
He looked past me toward the hallway.
“Is Nia here?””
“Don't.””
“Marcus, please.””
“You don't get to walk into my house and ask about my daughter.””
Daniel looked at me.
“She is my daughter too.””
I grabbed his coat.
“Don't ever say that again.””
He didn't resist.
“I deserve that.””
I released him.
Behind me, Dr. Harrison stepped into the doorway.
“Daniel, you shouldn't have come here.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Neither should you have kept the truth from him.””
“I was protecting the family.””
“You were protecting the people who paid you.””
The words hit the room like a slap.
I turned toward the doctor.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel pulled a folded document from his jacket.
“Your father didn't die naturally, Marcus.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“He discovered the truth about Nia's parentage. He also discovered that someone was moving money out of Elena's trust.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She had gone completely still.
Daniel continued.
“Dad confronted the person responsible. Two days later, he was hospitalized.””
I remembered the funeral.
The sudden illness.
The doctor who had told us his heart had simply failed.
“Who was responsible?””
Daniel looked directly at Vanessa.
“She knows.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“That's ridiculous.””
Daniel stepped inside.
“Tell him what you did with the medication.””
She began crying.
“I didn't do anything.””
“You changed the dosage.””
“Stop!””
“You gave Dad the wrong prescription after the hospital discharged him.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“Is that true?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Your father was already sick. I was helping.””
“Helping him die?””
“No!””
Daniel placed the document on the coffee table.
“It's a pharmacy record. The original prescription was for a low-dose blood thinner. The medication delivered to his house was something else.””
I looked at the paperwork.
There were delivery signatures.
One belonged to Vanessa.
Another belonged to Dr. Harrison.
I slowly turned toward the doctor.
He didn't meet my eyes.
“You were involved?””
Dr. Harrison sat down heavily.
“I made a terrible mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“I signed off on a medication substitution. I was told your father had approved it.””
“By whom?””
He looked at Vanessa.
She began shaking her head.
Daniel answered for him.
“Your wife.””
The room seemed to shrink.
Vanessa moved toward me.
“Marcus, you have to understand. I didn't want him dead.””
I stared at her.
“You changed his medication?””
“I thought it would make him easier to manage. He was becoming aggressive. He kept threatening to expose me.””
“Expose what?””
“That I had accessed the trust.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And you knew?””
“I found out after Dad died.””
“Then why didn't you come to me?””
Daniel's face crumpled.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
He looked toward Vanessa.
“She told me she'd make sure you lost Nia if I came back.””
I remembered the forged guardianship papers.
The three million dollars.
The secret medical files.
Everything was connected.
But I still couldn't understand one thing.
“Why did you stay away for twelve years?””
Daniel reached into his jacket and pulled out a small photograph.
It showed Elena holding newborn Nia.
On the back, in her handwriting, were six words:
Keep her safe until Marcus knows.
Daniel handed it to me.
“Elena gave me this the night before she died.””
I looked up.
“Why?””
“She knew Vanessa was planning to take Nia.””
“Then why didn't she tell me herself?””
“She tried.””
Daniel's voice cracked.
“She called you that night. You didn't answer.””
I froze.
I remembered that evening.
I had been at the office, dealing with an emergency involving one of our construction projects. My phone had been on silent.
When I finally checked it, there were three missed calls from Elena.
I had called back.
No one answered.
Daniel continued.
“She left a message. I heard it because she called me afterward.””
He took out his phone.
“I kept a copy.””
My hands began to shake.
He pressed play.
Elena's voice filled the room.
“Marcus, sweetheart, I need you to listen. There's something I should have told you about Nia. I was afraid you'd be angry, but I can't let Vanessa make this decision for us.
Please come home. I love you.””
The recording ended.
I closed my eyes.
For six years, I'd believed my wife had died without leaving me anything unsaid.
But she'd tried.
And I hadn't been there.
Daniel stepped closer.
“She made me promise to protect Nia.””
I looked at him.
“Then why didn't you?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was in hiding. Vanessa had evidence that could have sent me to prison. She threatened to release it if I came near you.””
“What evidence?””
He looked at Dr. Harrison.
The doctor slowly opened his briefcase.
Inside was a second folder.
“There's one more record,” he said.
“A document Elena signed shortly before her death.””
He placed it on the table.
It was a handwritten statement.
I recognized Elena's signature.
At the top, she had written:
*TO BE OPENED ONLY IF MARCUS DISCOVERS THE TRUTH ABOUT NIA.*
I unfolded it.
The first paragraph was addressed to me.
My love, if you're reading this, then the people I feared have finally revealed themselves.
My eyes moved to the next line.
There is something about Nia's birth that even Daniel doesn't know.
I stopped reading.
Daniel stared at the letter.
“What does it say?””
I continued.
The man listed as her biological father is not the only person who contributed to her existence. And the person who knows the complete truth is the woman who has been raising her beside you.
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying silently.
Then I read the final sentence.
Marcus, whatever happens, never let Vanessa obtain Nia's original birth certificate. It contains a name that could destroy everything.
A sudden sound came from upstairs.
A door slammed.
Then Nia screamed.
“DAD!””
I dropped the letter and ran toward the staircase.
Rachel appeared at the landing, pale and breathless.
“Marcus! Someone just called Nia's phone!””
I reached the top.
Nia was standing beside the bed, holding her phone.
Her face was white.
“Who called you, sweetheart?””
She handed me the screen.
The caller ID displayed a name I had never expected to see.
*MOM — ELENA CARTER.*
My dead wife's old number.

And beneath it was a voicemail notification.
Received less than one minute ago.
