Chapter 12: The Secret My Father Took to His Grave
I couldn't feel my hands.
I stared at Daniel through the open doorway.
He looked just as shocked as I felt.
“Lily,” I said into the phone, “are you absolutely certain?””
“Yes.””
“Who told you this?””
“Thomas showed me the test results. I didn't believe him, so I ordered another test.””
“Did you verify it independently?””
“Yes. Twice.””
I closed my eyes.
My father.
My own father.
The man who had raised Daniel and me.
The man who had held Nia's photograph in his hands.
He was Lily's biological father.
Which meant my father's relationship with Elena had been something far more complicated than I'd ever imagined.
“Lily, I need you to listen. I'm not going to ask you to trust me. But I need to understand what happened.””
She was silent.
Then she asked:
“Did Elena know?””
“I believe she did.””
“Did she know who my father was?””
I looked at Daniel.
He shook his head slowly.
“I don't know.””
Lily sighed.
“There's another document. I kept it.””
“What document?””
“A letter from Elena. Thomas had it locked in a safe. I took a photograph before I left.””
“Can you send it to me?””
“I will. But I want something first.””
“Anything.””
“I want to meet Nia.””
My heart tightened.
“She's twelve.””
“I know.””
“I don't want her frightened.””
“I'm not going to hurt her.””
I closed my eyes.
“I know.””
We agreed to meet in two days.
When I ended the call, Daniel sat heavily on the porch steps.
“Dad,” he whispered.
I looked at him.
“You're telling me our father fathered Lily?””
Daniel nodded.
“And Elena knew?””
“I think so.””
I felt anger rising.
“Why would she keep that from me?””
Daniel looked up.
“Maybe because she was trying to protect you.””
“Everyone keeps saying that!””
I paced across the driveway.
“My father had another daughter. My wife knew. Vanessa knew.
Thomas knew. And somehow I'm the only person who didn't?””
Rachel stepped outside.
“Marcus, there's something else you need to consider.””
I turned.
“What?””
“Why would your father leave the trust to both girls if he was only trying to protect them?””
I looked at the document.
The trust had been established for Nia and Lily.
My father had clearly known about both.
But the money wasn't the only thing he'd left.
There was a handwritten note attached to the original will.
I unfolded it.
To my sons,
I have made decisions in my life that I cannot undo. I hope you will judge me by what I did to protect the children, not by the mistakes that brought us here.
Lily deserves to know where she came from.
But she must never be used to punish her mother.
I stared at the words.
Her mother.
Elena.
That meant Elena had known the truth about my father.
And somehow, she'd chosen to protect Lily.
I returned to the car with the others.
On the drive home, I couldn't stop thinking about my childhood.
My father had always been strict.
He expected Daniel and me to excel in school, work in the family business, and never question his decisions.
He had been particularly protective of Daniel.
Now I understood why.
But I still didn't understand why he had hidden Lily.
At home, Nia was waiting in the living room.
She ran toward me.
“Did you find my sister?””
I knelt.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
Her face lit up.
“Is she okay?””
“She is. She has a little boy, too.””
Nia smiled.
“I have a nephew?””
I laughed softly.
“Yes.””
She hugged me.
“Can I meet her?””
“Soon.””
Then her expression changed.
“Dad, why didn't Grandma tell us?””
I looked at her.
“Your grandmother?””
She nodded.
“Grandma used to talk about a little girl named Lily. I thought she was a friend from when Mom was young.””
My heart stopped.
“What did she say?””
Nia ran upstairs and returned with a small notebook.
It had belonged to my mother.
I recognized the floral cover.
Nia opened it to a page marked with a ribbon.
There was a handwritten entry dated eleven years earlier.
I saw Lily today. She has Elena's eyes. I wanted to hold her, but Thomas wouldn't let me.
I read the sentence again.
My mother had known.
She'd visited Lily.
And she'd been prevented from seeing her.
The next entry was dated two days later.
I cannot keep this secret any longer. Marcus deserves the truth. If anything happens to me, he must know that Thomas has been lying about the girls.
I looked at the date.
It was the day before my mother died.
I felt sick.
“Dad?”” Nia whispered.
I closed the notebook.
“Where did you find this?””
“In Grandma's old box. I found it last week.””
I looked at her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I didn't know it was important.””
I kissed her forehead.
“You did nothing wrong.””
My phone buzzed.
An email from Thomas Reed.
No subject line.
Just one attachment.
A scanned copy of my mother's final statement.
I opened it.
The first paragraph read:
I, Margaret Carter, hereby declare that the events surrounding Lily's birth were not the result of an accident or a misunderstanding.
The second paragraph was even worse.
My husband, Robert Carter, had a relationship with Elena's mother before Elena was born. The child born from that relationship was raised as his granddaughter.
I stopped reading.
My father hadn't simply fathered Lily.
He had fathered Elena's mother.
Which meant Elena and Lily shared a biological father.
They were half-sisters.
I felt the room spin.
The final paragraph contained a name.
The person who arranged the second embryo transfer was not Vanessa. It was Robert Carter himself, who believed he could keep the family together by ensuring both children remained under the same inheritance.
I lowered the phone.
My father had engineered the entire arrangement.
The genetic donations.
The secret birth records.
The trust.
Everything.
Then another email arrived.
This one contained a photograph.
It showed my father standing beside a young woman outside the hospital.
The date was twelve years ago.
The woman was Vanessa.
And she was holding a newborn baby.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message:
Vanessa knows who the second biological father is. Ask her why she was willing to pretend otherwise.
I stared at the image.
The story had become more complicated than I could have imagined.
I called Vanessa.
She answered after two rings.
“Marcus?””
“Who fathered Lily?””
Silence.
Then I asked the question that had been haunting me.
“And why does my father's name appear on her DNA report?””
Vanessa began crying.
“Because Robert was trying to correct something he had done.””
“What?””
She whispered:
“He wasn't Lily's biological father.””
I gripped the phone.
“Then who was?””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“Marcus, you're not going to believe me.””
“Try.””
She said the name.
My own name.
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
“That's impossible.””
“No,” she whispered.
“It's not.””
I looked at Nia.
Then at the photograph of Elena.
And finally at the two names on the original birth records.
Vanessa spoke again.
“Marcus, Lily isn't your father's daughter.””
May you like
She paused.
“She's yours.””
