Chapter 11: My Uncle's Final Bargain

I held Leo's face between my hands.

“Sweetheart, did Sophie tell you her name?””

He nodded.

“She said her name was Sophie. She had yellow shoes.””

I looked toward Adrian.

His face had changed completely.

“Yellow shoes?””

Leo nodded.

“She was crying. She said she wanted her mommy.””

Adrian sat down heavily.

“That's Rebecca's daughter.””

I turned toward him.

“You know where Peter might have taken her?””

Adrian shook his head.

“No. But I know where Rebecca used to live.””

Officer Bennett immediately contacted his colleagues.

I looked at Leo.

“Did Uncle Peter hurt you?””

He hesitated.

Then he shook his head.

“He didn't hit me.””

“Did he threaten you?””

Leo nodded.

“He said Daddy would go to jail if I told anyone about the room.””

I closed my eyes.

For three years, I had believed my home was the safest place in the world for my son.

Now I was discovering that the people who should have protected him had turned it into a prison.

Nia knelt beside Leo.

“Would you like to sit with me, sweetheart?””

He nodded.

She took him into the adjoining room.

I turned toward Officer Bennett.

“I want Peter located immediately.””

“We're working on it.””

“He's outside.””

“Then let us handle the contact.””

I didn't argue.

But I knew my uncle.

Peter wasn't the kind of man who waited for other people to make decisions.

He had built his reputation by controlling situations before anyone realized they were happening.

And he was about to discover that I wasn't interested in negotiating.

Five minutes later, the front door opened.

Peter walked into the house without knocking.

He was sixty-two, impeccably dressed, with silver hair and a gold watch that had belonged to my grandfather.

He looked around the room.

His eyes stopped on Vanessa.

“Eleanor.””

He nodded toward my mother.

Then he looked at me.

“Marcus.””

I didn't return the greeting.

“Where is Sophie?””

Peter removed his gloves.

“Straight to business. Just like your father.””

“Where is she?””

“Safe.””

“Give me an address.””

He glanced at the officers.

“Can we speak privately?””

Officer Bennett stepped forward.

“No.””

Peter smiled politely.

“Then I suppose we'll all hear the same things.””

He placed a leather folder on the table.

Inside were company documents.

My signature appeared on several pages.

I looked at them.

“What is this?””

“Your authorization to transfer voting control of Carter Holdings into a family protection trust.””

I stared.

“I never signed this.””

Peter shrugged.

“Your wife handled the paperwork.””

I looked toward Vanessa.

She was staring at the documents.

For the first time, she seemed genuinely surprised.

Peter continued.

“The arrangement was intended to protect the company's interests if you became unavailable.””

“Unavailable?””

He nodded.

“Your business had been experiencing internal instability.””

I laughed.

“You mean you wanted control.””

Peter's smile disappeared.

“Your father built that company. I spent thirty years helping him.””

“And then he left control to me.””

“He left it to a man who spent more time chasing contracts than protecting his own family.””

I stepped closer.

“You used my son.””

Peter sighed.

“Children are sometimes caught in circumstances they don't understand.””

I felt my hands tighten.

“Don't talk about Leo.””

Peter looked at me.

“Then stop pretending you know what happened to Emily.””

I froze.

“What did you do?””

Peter opened the folder.

“Emily discovered the original embryo records. She intended to expose the clinic, Vanessa, and everyone connected to the arrangement.””

“Everyone?””

“Yes.””

“Were you involved?””

He looked at the officers.

“I was protecting the family.””

I shook my head.

“Answer the question.””

Peter leaned forward.

“I arranged the financial side of the clinic transfer. I knew about the second embryo. I also knew Emily was going to make the entire family a public scandal.””

My stomach turned.

“You arranged the embryo transfers?””

He nodded.

“Vanessa handled the clinic.””

“And my mother?””

“She signed a few documents. She believed she was helping.””

I looked toward Eleanor.

She was crying silently.

Peter continued.

“Emily became unstable. She threatened to destroy everything. I needed her to calm down.””

“Did you interfere with her treatment?””

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

“Did you?””

Peter looked directly at me.

“I authorized the private transfer request.””

The room went silent.

Dr. Reed stood.

“You knew she was medically unstable.””

Peter shrugged.

“I was told the transfer would be safe.””

“You were told otherwise,” Dr. Reed replied.

Peter turned toward him.

“You should have stayed dead.””

Officer Bennett immediately moved between them.

“That's enough.””

Peter laughed.

“Look at this. A family disagreement, and suddenly everyone wants to play detective.””

I stared at him.

“Emily died because of you.””

His expression hardened.

“Emily died because she refused to listen.””

I felt something snap.

I took one step forward.

Officer Bennett caught my arm.

“Mr. Carter.””

Peter straightened his jacket.

“You see? This is exactly why Vanessa was concerned. You can't control yourself.””

I looked at him.

“You want to talk about control?””

I pointed toward the hallway.

“My six-year-old son is terrified of the people who were supposed to love him. My wife has been using recordings of his dead mother to manipulate him. You've forged documents, interfered with medical treatment, and used my company to finance your scheme.””

Peter's smile vanished.

“And you think you can prove all that?””

Daniel stepped into the room.

“I can.””

Peter turned.

Daniel held up his phone.

“I recorded the meetings. All of them.””

Peter's expression changed.

“You little idiot.””

Daniel pressed a button.

Peter's voice filled the room.

“Once the guardianship is approved, Marcus becomes a liability. Vanessa gets control of the trust, and the children become our responsibility.””

Another voice answered.

Vanessa.

“And if Marcus fights?””

Peter replied.

“Then we make sure he can't.””

The recording continued.

“An accident would be unfortunate, but not entirely unexpected.””

I felt the room go cold.

Peter lunged toward Daniel.

The officers caught him before he reached the phone.

“Get your hands off me!”” Peter shouted.

Officer Bennett twisted his arm behind his back.

“You're being detained pending further investigation.””

Peter struggled.

“You have no idea who you're dealing with!””

I looked at him.

“Yes, I do.””

For the first time in my life, my uncle looked small.

Then his expression changed.

He stopped struggling.

He turned toward me.

“Marcus, before you celebrate, there's something you should know.””

I said nothing.

“Emily didn't just leave you a letter.””

He nodded toward the hospital record.

“She left something else. Something that would have destroyed her if it had become public.””

“What?””

Peter smiled faintly.

“Ask your mother why she was in the hospital that night.””

I turned toward Eleanor.

She had gone pale.

“Mom?””

She looked at me.

Then she whispered:

“I wasn't there just to sign the discharge papers.””

I stared.

“Why were you there?””

She covered her face.

“I was trying to take Leo.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Eleanor began sobbing.

“Emily had asked me to protect him. She said Vanessa was dangerous. She wanted me to take him somewhere safe.””

I stared at her.

“Then why didn't you?””

Eleanor looked toward Peter.

“Because he told me that if I took Leo, he would make sure you lost everything.””

I felt sick.

“Did Emily know?””

My mother nodded.

“She knew I had agreed to help Peter. She confronted me in the hospital corridor.””

I couldn't speak.

Then Eleanor said something I would never forget.

“Your wife wasn't alone when she died, Marcus. She was waiting for you.””

I closed my eyes.

“And you kept me away.””

Eleanor collapsed into the chair.

“Yes.””

I turned away.

Officer Bennett was escorting Peter toward the front entrance.

But before he left, Peter looked over his shoulder.

“You still haven't found the girl.””

I stopped.

“What?””

Peter smiled.

“By the time you find her, she'll already be gone.””

Adrian rushed toward him.

“Where is Sophie?””

Peter laughed.

“Ask Richard.””

I turned.

Richard Hale was no longer standing in the ballroom.

His briefcase was still on the table.

But the man himself had disappeared.

And when Officer Bennett opened it, he found a passport, a plane ticket, and a photograph of a little girl wearing yellow shoes.

The ticket was for a flight leaving Chicago that evening.
