Chapter 3: My Wife Had Already Prepared Her Story

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

My wife had called the police.

And somehow, she had managed to make me look like the criminal.

I looked at Leo.

He was clinging to my jacket, his little face pressed against my shoulder.

“Daddy, are they going to take me?””

“No.””

I said it firmly.

But for the first time, I wasn't entirely sure I could keep that promise without help.

Robert approached.

“Sir, the officers are asking to speak with you.””

“Tell them I'll be upstairs in a minute.””

He nodded.

I turned to Daniel.

“Stay here.””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“You don't understand what she's capable of.””

I stepped closer.

“Then start explaining.””

He glanced at Leo.

“Not in front of him.””

I almost laughed.

“You've been helping my wife terrify my child, and now you're concerned about what he hears?””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I didn't know she was using the recordings like that.””

“Then why were you in this room?””

He pointed at the computer.

“She paid me to manage the audio files. I work in sound production. She said it was for a memorial project.””

I stared at him.

“And you believed her?””

He shook his head.

“Not at first.””

“What changed?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said something that made me feel physically ill.

“She told me Leo had been saying things about you.””

“What things?””

“That you hit him. That you locked him in his room. That he was afraid of you.””

I looked down at my son.

Leo's eyes widened.

“That's not true, Daddy.””

I pulled him closer.

“I know.””

Daniel continued.

“Vanessa said she was documenting everything because she wanted full custody if something happened to her.””

I stared.

“Full custody? She's his stepmother.””

“She was planning to adopt him.””

I remembered the adoption paperwork Vanessa had placed on my desk two months earlier.

She had told me it was a routine step toward making Leo feel like a permanent part of her family.

I hadn't signed it.

She had been furious.

Now I understood why.

“Who was helping her?”” I asked.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Her attorney.””

“Name.””

“Richard Hale.””

I knew him.

Richard was a respected family lawyer who had attended several of our charity events.

I had even introduced him to Vanessa.

My stomach twisted.

“Get the computer disconnected. Don't touch anything else. Robert, make sure nobody enters this room.””

I took Leo upstairs.

The ballroom had transformed.

Guests stood in small groups, whispering. A few had already left.

Vanessa stood near the grand staircase, one hand resting dramatically against her chest.

Two uniformed police officers were beside her.

The moment she saw me, her expression changed.

“Marcus!””

She hurried toward the officers.

“That's him. That's my husband.””

The taller officer raised a hand.

“Sir, I'm Officer Bennett. We received a report of a domestic disturbance and possible child endangerment.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was wearing the expression of a terrified wife.

Her mascara was slightly smudged.

I almost admired the performance.

“What exactly did she tell you?””

Officer Bennett glanced at his notes.

“She claims you became aggressive toward your wife and removed your son from the event against her wishes.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Marcus, please. Give Leo to me. He's frightened.””

Leo immediately buried his face in my neck.

“Don't let her.””

The officer noticed.

“Ma'am, perhaps we should speak with the child separately.””

Vanessa nodded quickly.

“Of course. He's been confused all evening.””

I tightened my arms around Leo.

“Before anyone speaks to him, I want to know why my wife has been playing recordings of his dead mother in a locked room beneath my house.””

The officer's expression changed.

Vanessa went pale.

“That's a lie!””

I looked directly at her.

“Is it?””

She turned toward the officers.

“He's grieving. He's been drinking. He's not thinking clearly.””

“I had one whiskey.””

“You've been under tremendous stress, Marcus.””

“Stop pretending you're worried about me.””

Her face hardened.

For a split second, the mask slipped.

Then she turned toward Leo.

“Sweetheart, come here.””

Leo shook his head.

“Mommy said you were bad.””

Vanessa blinked.

I watched her carefully.

“What did you just say?””

Leo looked at her.

“You said my mommy didn't love me. You said she wanted me to go away.””

One of the officers glanced at Vanessa.

She laughed nervously.

“He misunderstood something I said.””

Leo began crying.

“You made Mommy talk on the computer!””

The room fell silent.

Vanessa's mouth opened.

Then she looked at me.

“You've been coaching him.””

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

“Coaching him?””

“Yes! You've always resented that I tried to discipline him. You've never wanted me to be his mother.””

I stared at her.

“You don't need to be his mother, Vanessa. You needed to be a safe adult.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You have no idea what I've sacrificed for this family.””

I took one step toward her.

“Then explain the room.””

She looked at the officers.

“I want a lawyer.””

Officer Bennett raised his eyebrows.

“Ma'am, nobody has accused you of a crime yet.””

Vanessa's expression became icy.

“Then perhaps you should listen to my side before believing everything my husband says.””

“I intend to,” he replied.

I took a breath.

“Officer, there's a computer downstairs containing recordings of my late wife's voice, photographs of my son, and written instructions about manipulating him.””

Officer Bennett looked toward his partner.

“Can you show us?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“No! You cannot enter that room without a warrant.””

The officer looked at her.

“Why?””

She hesitated.

“Because it's private.””

I almost smiled.

Three years of marriage, and I had never heard her use the word private to describe anything in our home.

Officer Bennett spoke into his radio.

“Requesting a supervisor and additional units.””

Vanessa's hands began trembling.

Then her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

I saw the name.

*RICHARD HALE.*

She rejected the call.

It rang again.

This time, she answered and walked several feet away.

I watched her carefully.

“Yes,” she whispered.

“It's happening.””

A pause.

“No, he found the room.””

Another pause.

Her voice dropped.

“Then activate Plan B.””

She ended the call.

I felt cold all over.

I turned toward Officer Bennett.

“Did you hear that?””

He nodded.

“Who is Richard Hale?””

“My wife's attorney.””

The officer wrote the name down.

Vanessa approached us again, her expression strangely calm.

“Marcus, I think we should stop this before you ruin everyone's life.””

I looked at her.

“You've already done that.””

She leaned closer.

“Do you really think those recordings are the worst thing you'll find?””

My throat tightened.

“What does that mean?””

She smiled faintly.

Then she reached into her purse and removed a folded document.

She handed it to Officer Bennett.

“Since we're discussing Leo's safety, perhaps you should see this.””

The officer unfolded it.

I watched his expression change as he read.

“What is that?”” I demanded.

He didn't answer immediately.

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“It's an emergency guardianship petition.””

My stomach dropped.

The document contained allegations of emotional instability, neglect, and unsafe parenting.

My name was listed as the respondent.

And beneath the allegations was a signature.

Mine.

I stared at it.

The signature looked almost perfect.

But I had never signed that document.

“That's forged,” I said.

Vanessa tilted her head.

“Are you sure?””

I looked at the date.

It was three weeks earlier.

Then I noticed something at the bottom of the page.

A witness signature.

*Daniel Carter.*

I turned toward the basement hallway.

Daniel had just appeared at the top of the stairs, surrounded by security.

He looked at me.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

And slowly, he shook his head.

“Marcus,” he said, his voice breaking.

“There's something else you need to know.””

Vanessa's face turned white.

“Daniel, don't.””

He swallowed.

“Your wife didn't just forge your signature.””

He looked at Leo.

“She already filed the adoption papers.””

Then he pointed at the document in the officer's hand.

“And the person who helped her do it was…”

His eyes moved toward the ballroom entrance.

I followed his gaze.

A man in a dark navy suit had just walked through the doors.

Richard Hale.

He was carrying a leather briefcase.

And behind him was a woman holding a little boy's photograph.

It was a photograph of Leo.
