Chapter 7: The Signature That Destroyed My Family

I read the hospital record again.

Then a third time.

My mother's name was written beneath the doctor's notes in dark blue ink.

*Eleanor Carter.*

My mother.

The woman who had held my hand at Emily's funeral. The woman who had promised to help me raise Leo. The woman who had told me, over and over, that Emily's death was an accident nobody could have predicted.

I felt the room spinning.

“No,” I whispered.

Adrian stood beside the dressing table.

“Marcus, I'm sorry.””

I looked at him.

“Where did you get this?””

“From Emily's former medical advocate. She contacted me after Vanessa started investigating the clinic.””

I stared at the signature.

“Why would my mother be involved?””

Nobody answered.

Vanessa had stopped crying.

She was watching me with an expression I couldn't understand.

Then she spoke.

“Your mother knew everything.””

I turned toward her.

“What did she know?””

“That Emily was in danger. That the pregnancy had complications. That the clinic had made an error.””

I stepped closer.

“Explain.””

Vanessa glanced at Officer Bennett.

“I don't want to discuss medical records in front of strangers.””

Officer Bennett folded his arms.

“Then you should have thought about that before bringing them into a custody dispute.””

Vanessa looked away.

Adrian picked up the hospital record.

“Emily's medical team recommended immediate monitoring. She was experiencing serious complications. But someone signed a discharge request.””

“Why would my mother do that?””

Adrian shook his head.

“That's what we need to find out.””

I pulled out my phone.

My mother answered on the second ring.

“Marcus, darling. Is everything all right? Vanessa just called me.””

I closed my eyes.

“Mom, where are you?””

“At home. Why?””

“I need you to come to my house.””

A pause.

“What's happened?””

I looked at the paper.

“Emily's hospital records.””

Silence.

Then she said, very quietly:

“Who showed you those?””

My stomach dropped.

“That's your first question?””

“Marcus, listen to me. There are things you don't understand.””

I gripped the phone.

“Did you sign Emily's discharge papers?””

Another silence.

Then she whispered:

“I did what I thought was best for this family.””

The call ended.

I stood motionless.

My mother hadn't denied it.

Leo tugged gently at my jacket.

“Daddy?””

I looked down.

His cheeks were wet again.

“Are you angry with Grandma?””

I knelt and wiped his face.

“I'm confused, sweetheart.””

“Did Grandma hurt Mommy?””

I couldn't answer.

Instead, I pulled him into my arms.

“Whatever happened, none of this is your fault.””

Behind me, Vanessa laughed.

It was a small, bitter sound.

“You really think your mother is innocent?””

I turned.

“Don't speak.””

“She helped me.””

I felt my blood run cold.

“What?””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“Eleanor knew about the clinic. She knew about the embryo. She helped me arrange everything.””

Adrian moved forward.

“Vanessa, stop.””

But she continued.

“She wanted a grandchild. Emily couldn't give her the kind of family she wanted, and you were too distracted by work to notice what was happening.””

I stared at her.

“My mother helped you?””

Vanessa smiled.

“She introduced us.””

I remembered the first time Vanessa had come to dinner.

My mother had insisted I meet her.

She had called Vanessa intelligent, compassionate, and exactly the kind of woman I needed.

I had thought it was a coincidence.

Now every memory felt contaminated.

Officer Bennett spoke into his radio.

“Requesting immediate preservation of all medical documents and electronic devices.””

Vanessa suddenly looked frightened.

“You can't do that.””

“Why not?””

“Because those records are confidential.””

Adrian shook his head.

“Confidential records don't protect fraudulent signatures.””

A knock sounded at the bedroom door.

Robert appeared.

“Sir, your mother is here.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Send her in.””

Eleanor entered wearing a cream coat and pearl earrings.

She looked at the officers, then at Adrian.

Her eyes stopped on the hospital record.

“Oh, Marcus.””

I stood.

“Don't.””

She removed her gloves.

“Darling, please. Let me explain.””

“Did you sign those papers?””

She looked at the floor.

“Yes.””

The answer was so simple that it almost made me laugh.

“Why?””

Eleanor took a shaky breath.

“Emily was determined to continue the pregnancy despite the doctors' warnings. She wouldn't listen to anyone.””

“That's not your decision.””

“I was trying to protect her.””

“By signing a false discharge request?””

Her eyes filled.

“I thought she would be safer at home.””

Adrian interrupted.

“The doctors specifically advised against discharge.””

Eleanor looked at him.

“You have no right to judge me.””

He didn't respond.

I stepped closer to my mother.

“Did Vanessa tell you what she was doing at the clinic?””

Eleanor looked toward my wife.

Vanessa gave her a tiny nod.

That was all I needed.

“Mom.””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“She said she could give you the family you wanted.””

I felt something inside me break.

“I already had a family.””

“I know.””

“Emily was my family.””

Eleanor began crying.

“I never wanted her to die.””

“But you helped the woman who put her life at risk.””

Vanessa immediately protested.

“I didn't put Emily at risk!””

Adrian lifted the medical report.

“Then explain the altered donor authorization.””

Vanessa went silent.

Eleanor suddenly reached for my arm.

“Marcus, you have to understand. Vanessa promised that everything would be handled quietly. She said Emily would recover, that Leo would be born healthy, and that you would never have to know about the clinic mistake.””

I stared at her.

“Clinic mistake?””

Eleanor nodded.

“She told me the wrong embryo had been transferred.””

Adrian's expression changed.

“That's not what the original records say.””

Eleanor looked confused.

“What?””

Adrian opened the second folder.

“The embryo transfer was authorized under a false patient code. Emily's consent form was altered after the procedure.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Did Emily know?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

“Did my wife know what you had done?””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“She found out afterward.””

I felt my knees weaken.

“When?””

“During her second trimester.””

The room became unbearably quiet.

Adrian looked devastated.

“She never told me.””

Vanessa shrugged.

“She was afraid you'd both turn against her.””

I stepped forward.

“What did you tell Emily?””

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“I told her that if she exposed the clinic, the hospital would investigate her medical history. I told her she might lose the baby.””

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

“You threatened a pregnant woman?””

“She was going to destroy everything.””

Eleanor covered her mouth.

“Vanessa…”

But my wife wasn't finished.

“She was going to tell you the truth. She was going to leave, and I couldn't let that happen.””

Officer Bennett immediately stepped between us.

“Mrs. Carter, I need you to stop speaking.””

Vanessa's expression turned furious.

“You don't understand. Emily had everything. The husband, the house, the inheritance. I was supposed to have a life too.””

I looked at her.

“You destroyed hers.””

She shook her head.

“I didn't kill her.””

I felt the room go silent.

Nobody had used that word.

Nobody had accused her of murder.

Yet she had just said it.

Officer Bennett looked at his partner.

“Make a note of that statement.””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“I meant I didn't cause the accident!””

But the damage was done.

I turned toward Eleanor.

“Did you know Emily was being threatened?””

My mother began sobbing.

“I only found out afterward.””

“Then why did you keep quiet?””

She looked at Leo.

“Because I was afraid you'd lose your son.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Eleanor reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.

“I received this three days after Emily died.””

She handed it to me.

Inside was a typed letter.

If Marcus learns the truth about Leo's conception, he will lose the trust, the property, and his parental rights. Keep him away from the clinic investigation.

At the bottom was a signature.

Richard Hale.

I looked up.

“Why did you keep this?””

Eleanor's voice cracked.

“Because I was afraid.””

I stared at the letter.

Then I noticed something written in pen on the reverse side.

A date.

And a name.

*DR. SAMUEL REED — ORIGINAL TRANSFER RECORDS.*

Adrian leaned over my shoulder.

His face changed.

“That's impossible.””

“What?””

He pointed to the date.

“Dr. Reed was the physician who handled Emily's treatment.””

I looked at him.

“And?””

Adrian swallowed.

“He died six months ago.””

Before anyone could respond, Eleanor whispered:

“No. He didn't.””

Everyone turned toward her.

May you like

She looked terrified.

“Because I spoke to him last week.””
