Chapter 14: The Last Lie My Family Told

The hallway seemed to shrink around me.

I stared at my mother.

“What did you just say?””

Eleanor's hands trembled.

“Your father didn't die naturally.””

I looked at the document.

Then back at her.

“Explain.””

She swallowed.

“Peter told me your father had suffered a stroke. That's what everyone was told. But he was already seriously ill before that.””

I shook my head.

“He had a heart condition.””

“Yes.””

“He died in his sleep.””

Eleanor nodded.

“That's what the doctor reported.””

I stepped closer.

“Then what are you saying?””

She looked toward the police officers.

“I don't know whether Peter caused his death. But I know he changed your father's medication shortly before he died.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Your father wanted to stop the clinic arrangement. He had discovered that Vanessa was manipulating the medical records and using the trust to finance her plans.””

I stared.

“So Peter wanted him out of the way?””

Eleanor covered her face.

“I believe so.””

Adrian looked at the medical report.

“There's a date here.””

He pointed.

The document had been created three weeks before my father's death.

I remembered those weeks.

My father had been unusually quiet. He had called me several times, asking whether I trusted Peter.

I had laughed.

I had told him Peter was family.

The last time we spoke, he had said:

“Marcus, never sign anything because someone tells you it's for your own good.””

I had thought he was referring to business.

Now I understood he might have been trying to warn me.

Officer Bennett approached.

“Mr. Carter, we're securing this property and its records. Your mother will need to answer some questions.””

Eleanor nodded.

“I'll tell them everything.””

I looked at her.

“Why now?””

She began crying again.

“Because I saw Sophie in that closet.””

She looked at the little girl in Adrian's arms.

“She reminded me of Leo when he was small. And I realized I had spent six years protecting people who never cared about either child.””

I wanted to believe her.

But trust was something I no longer gave away freely.

A uniformed officer approached with a phone.

“Sir, we have a problem.””

I turned.

“What?””

“Richard Hale has been located.””

“Where?””

“Chicago O'Hare Airport. He attempted to board an international flight.””

“Was he arrested?””

The officer nodded.

“He's being questioned. But there's something else.””

He handed me a printed message.

It had been recovered from Richard's phone.

Peter: Destroy the original genetic file. If Marcus finds out about the second substitution, the entire arrangement collapses.

I looked at the timestamp.

It had been sent two days before Emily died.

My stomach turned.

There was another message beneath it.

And make sure Eleanor stays quiet.

I looked at my mother.

She closed her eyes.

Officer Bennett took the document.

“We'll include that in the investigation.””

I looked toward Adrian.

“Let's get the children somewhere safe.””

He nodded.

Sophie had fallen asleep against his shoulder.

Her tiny hand was holding the collar of his coat.

I felt something inside me soften.

We left the farmhouse under police escort.

On the drive back to Chicago, Leo called me.

Nia had helped him use my spare phone.

“Daddy?””

“Hey, buddy.””

“Did you find her?””

I smiled.

“Yes.””

“Is she okay?””

“She is.””

“Can I talk to her?””

I looked at Adrian.

He nodded.

I passed the phone.

“Sophie, sweetheart, would you like to say hello?””

She woke slowly.

“Hello?””

Leo's voice came through.

“Hi. I'm Leo.””

Sophie sat up.

“Are you my brother?””

Leo looked at me through the screen.

I nodded.

He smiled.

“I think so.””

Sophie began crying.

“I thought nobody wanted me.””

Leo's little voice softened.

“I want you.””

I looked out the window.

For the first time in years, I felt something other than anger.

Hope.

When we reached home, Nia was waiting in the foyer.

Leo ran toward us.

He stopped when he saw Sophie.

For a moment, the two children simply stared at each other.

Then Leo approached.

“Do you like dinosaurs?””

Sophie nodded.

“I like rabbits.””

“I have both.””

She smiled.

“Can we play?””

Leo took her hand.

“Come on.””

They disappeared into the living room.

Adrian watched them.

His eyes were wet.

“Thank you,” he whispered.

I shook my head.

“Don't thank me. We both owe them a better future.””

We stood together for a moment.

Then Officer Bennett approached.

“Mr. Carter, there's another matter.””

I turned.

“What now?””

“We recovered a storage device from the farmhouse. It contains financial records, medical files, and several video recordings.””

“Anything important?””

He nodded.

“One recording appears to have been made by Emily.””

My heart stopped.

“Emily?””

He handed me a tablet.

The video showed my late wife sitting in our old bedroom.

She looked tired, but she was smiling.

I pressed play.

“Marcus, if you've found this, then I'm guessing the truth has finally come out.””

I sat down.

Her voice filled the room.

“I wish I could have told you everything myself. I wish I had been brave enough to trust you with the truth.””

She paused.

Then she looked directly into the camera.

“There's something I need you to understand. Your father did not arrange everything because he wanted a grandson. He arranged it because he knew Peter was planning to take control of the company.””

I frowned.

Emily continued.

“Your father discovered that Peter had been stealing from the family trust. He wanted to expose him, but he was afraid Peter would use you as leverage.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“He created the embryo arrangement as a way to protect the inheritance from Peter. But Vanessa found out and changed the records.””

The video crackled.

Emily leaned closer.

“Marcus, I need you to look at the final document in the folder. Your father left something for Leo.””

The screen went dark.

I looked toward Officer Bennett.

“Where is the folder?””

He handed it to me.

Inside was a document bearing my father's signature.

It was a trust amendment.

I read the first page.

Then the second.

And then I stopped.

The entire family trust had been restructured six months before my father's death.

Leo wasn't supposed to inherit control at twenty-five.

He was supposed to inherit it immediately if anyone attempted to manipulate his guardianship.

But there was another clause.

One that I had never seen before.

If any individual attempts to obtain control of the Carter family trust through fraud, coercion, or unlawful guardianship, all voting rights shall transfer to the independent beneficiary protection foundation.

I read the name of the foundation's administrator.

*Emily Carter.*

I stared.

“Emily was the administrator?””

Officer Bennett nodded.

“Apparently.””

“But she's dead.””

I turned the page.

At the bottom was a second signature.

A successor administrator.

Someone my father had appointed in secret.

I looked at the name.

Then I laughed once, in disbelief.

It was Adrian Blake.

He stared at the document.

“What?””

I handed it to him.

He read it slowly.

“Why would your father appoint me?””

I shook my head.

“I don't know.””

Then I noticed the date.

My father had signed the amendment two days before his death.

There was a handwritten note beneath it.

If Adrian is reading this, tell him I know what he did for Emily. He deserves to know the truth.

Adrian looked at me.

“What did I do?””

Before I could answer, the front door opened.

A police officer entered.

“Mr. Carter, Peter has requested to speak with you.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

The officer hesitated.

“He says he has evidence proving that Emily's death was not the only crime committed that night.””

I looked at the tablet.

Then at the trust document.

I finally understood.

May you like

The truth wasn't finished.

Not even close.
