Chapter 5: The Secret Emily Took to Her Grave
I read the message four times.
Adrian Blake.
The name meant nothing to me, yet the letter in my hand made it impossible to dismiss.
I looked toward the front entrance.
“Robert, is anyone outside?””
He checked his radio.
“There's a black SUV near the east gate, sir.””
“Who owns it?””
“Unknown. A man is asking to speak with you.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Don't let him in.””
I turned slowly.
“Why?””
“Because he's dangerous.””
Patricia shook her head.
“Vanessa, you don't get to decide that anymore.””
Richard closed his briefcase.
“Officer, this situation has become unnecessarily complicated. I recommend everyone stop making accusations until we have proper documentation.””
Officer Bennett looked at him.
“Mr. Hale, you're welcome to remain available for questioning. You're not in charge here.””
Richard's jaw tightened.
I handed the letter to Officer Bennett.
“Please preserve this. I want everything documented.””
He nodded.
I then turned to Robert.
“Bring the man at the gate into the security office. Don't let him approach Leo.””
Vanessa grabbed my sleeve.
“Marcus, listen to me. You cannot let that man near our son.””
I removed her hand.
“Why are you so afraid of him?””
She stared at me.
For the first time, she had no immediate answer.
I walked toward the library with Leo in my arms.
Nia followed us.
“Sir?””
I stopped.
“Can you stay with him for a moment?””
She nodded.
I kissed Leo's forehead.
“I'm going to talk to someone. I'll be right outside.””
His little fingers held mine.
“Promise?””
“I promise.””
Nia settled him on the sofa and gave him a glass of water.
I stepped into the corridor, where Officer Bennett was waiting.
“Are you sure you want to meet this man?”” he asked.
“No. But I need to know why he thinks he's Leo's father.””
Officer Bennett nodded.
“We'll stay nearby.””
The security office was a small room beside the garage.
A man stood near the window with his hands in his coat pockets.
He was tall, perhaps forty-three, with dark hair, a narrow scar across his chin, and tired eyes.
The moment I entered, he looked at me.
“Marcus Carter?””
“Yes.””
He nodded slowly.
“I'm Adrian.””
I didn't offer my hand.
“Why are you here?””
He looked toward the door.
“Because my son is inside your house.””
I stepped closer.
“Careful.””
Adrian lowered his eyes.
“I know how that sounds.””
“Then explain yourself.””
He pulled a chair out but didn't sit.
“Emily and I knew each other before she met you.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“How well?””
“Very well.””
“Were you involved with her?””
He nodded.
The answer landed like a punch.
“Then why did she marry me?””
Adrian rubbed his forehead.
“Because she loved you.””
I laughed without humor.
“That's convenient.””
“I'm not asking you to believe me. I'm asking you to hear what happened.””
I crossed my arms.
“Talk.””
He took a breath.
“Emily and I met in college. We were together for several years. When she discovered she couldn't carry a pregnancy safely, we began exploring fertility treatment.””
I remembered Emily's complicated pregnancy.
The months of hospital visits.
The specialists.
The way she had cried when doctors warned her that another pregnancy might endanger her life.
I had always believed Leo's birth had been the result of our treatment together.
Adrian continued.
“Before we separated, we had frozen embryos. Emily later decided she wanted to become a mother. But I was overseas, and we had already ended our relationship.””
I stared at him.
“Are you telling me Leo was conceived using your sperm?””
He nodded.
I felt my throat tighten.
“Did Emily know?””
“Yes.””
“Did I?””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
I looked away.
For several seconds, the only sound was the humming of the security office refrigerator.
Then I asked the question that mattered most.
“Why did she keep it from me?””
Adrian's expression softened.
“She told me you were the man she wanted to raise her child with. She believed being a father was about showing up, not genetics.””
I stared at him.
“Then why are you here now?””
His face changed.
“Because Vanessa contacted me six months ago.””
“What?””
“She said Emily had left documents proving I was Leo's biological father. She told me you knew and had been keeping Leo from me.””
I shook my head.
“That's impossible.””
“I know that now.””
“What did she want?””
Adrian reached into his coat and pulled out a small USB drive.
“She wanted me to sign a statement confirming that Emily had deceived you and that Leo belonged with his biological father.””
I stared at the drive.
“Why would she want that?””
“Because she claimed you were planning to send Leo away to boarding school and that you were emotionally unstable.””
I nearly laughed.
“She's been telling everyone I'm a terrible father.””
Adrian nodded.
“She also offered me money.””
“How much?””
“Two million dollars.””
I stared at him.
“And you refused?””
He nodded.
“I'm not interested in buying a child.””
He looked toward the house.
“I came because she told me Leo was being mistreated. I believed her. Then I received a message from someone who worked here.””
“Nia?””
“No. Daniel.””
I frowned.
“Daniel contacted you?””
“He sent me a recording.””
Adrian connected the USB drive to the computer on the desk.
A video appeared.
It showed Vanessa sitting in a room I recognized immediately.
Our home office.
She was speaking to someone off-camera.
“Once Marcus signs the adoption agreement, everything becomes easier,” she said.
A man's voice responded.
“And if he refuses?””
Vanessa smiled.
“Then we use the boy.””
I felt sick.
The recording continued.
“Leo is young. He'll repeat whatever we teach him. If he tells the court that Marcus is frightening and that he wants to live with his real father, the judge will have no reason to question it.””
The other man laughed.
“And the biological father?””
Vanessa shrugged.
“He'll disappear again. Men like that are easy to manage when they have something to lose.””
The recording ended.
I looked at Adrian.
“Who was the other man?””
He hesitated.
“Richard.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Adrian continued.
“There are more recordings. Some are from conversations with Daniel. Others involve your wife's financial arrangements.””
I looked at him.
“Why would Vanessa want custody of Leo?””
Adrian's expression became grim.
“Because your estate has a provision that activates if you become incapacitated or lose legal custody of your child.””
I stared.
“What provision?””
“Emily's family trust.””
I felt a chill.
Emily's father had been a wealthy industrialist. When he died, he left a substantial inheritance for Leo.
The trust was supposed to protect him until he turned twenty-five.
I had never questioned the arrangements because Emily had managed most of the legal details before her death.
“What does Vanessa get?””
Adrian hesitated.
“If she becomes Leo's legal guardian, she gains control of the trust's voting rights until he reaches adulthood.””
I understood.
This wasn't about motherhood.
It wasn't about love.
It was about money.
Millions of dollars.
And my wife had been preparing to take control of it through a fabricated custody case.
I looked toward the library.
“Does Leo know about you?””
Adrian shook his head.
“No. I don't want him confused. I want to do this properly.””
For the first time, I saw something in his expression that I recognized.
Fear.
Not fear for himself.
Fear of losing a child he had never been allowed to know.
“I won't let anyone use him again,” I said.
Adrian nodded.
“Neither will I.””
Then he reached into his pocket and removed another photograph.
It showed Vanessa standing outside a hospital, holding a newborn baby.
The date was six years earlier.
“Marcus,” Adrian said quietly, “there's another reason you need to know about me.””
I studied the photograph.
“What's that?””
“Vanessa was at the fertility clinic when Leo was conceived.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because she worked there.””
My blood ran cold.
Adrian continued.
“She wasn't a nurse. She was an administrator with access to patient records.””
He pointed at the photograph.
“And she knew about Emily's embryo before you ever met her.””
I stared at him.
“Are you saying Vanessa deliberately entered my life?””
He nodded.
“I think she did.””
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
Nia.
I answered immediately.
“Nia?””
Her voice was shaking.
“Sir, please come back upstairs.””
“What happened?””
“Mrs. Vanessa is in the library.””
I frowned.
“She isn't supposed to be near Leo.””
Nia began crying.
“She's holding him.””
My stomach dropped.
“Put him on the phone.””
There was a brief silence.
Then I heard Leo's voice.
“Daddy?””
“Leo! Are you okay?””
He whispered something.
I couldn't understand it.
Then Vanessa's voice came through clearly.
“Marcus, come home.””
A pause.
May you like
“Or you may never see your son again.””
The call ended.
