Chapter 9: The Truth About Emily's Final Night
Dr. Samuel Reed entered the house with two police officers.
He was in his late sixties, with silver hair, a slight limp, and the exhausted expression of a man who had spent too many years carrying a secret.
He placed his medical bag on the table.
“Mr. Carter?””
I nodded.
“You're supposed to be dead.””
He looked at Eleanor.
“I understand why you were told that.””
My mother stared at him.
“You said you were leaving the country.””
“I did.””
“Why?””
Dr. Reed glanced toward Vanessa.
“Because I was afraid.””
Vanessa immediately stood.
“This is absurd. He's a disgraced physician trying to save himself.””
Dr. Reed didn't look at her.
“Mrs. Carter, I have spent six years regretting my silence.””
I stepped closer.
“What happened to my wife?””
He opened his medical bag and removed a thick file.
“Before I answer that, I need you to understand something. Emily was not simply a patient. She was the person who first discovered the embryo substitution.””
I frowned.
“She knew?””
“Yes. She discovered it during a routine review of her treatment records.””
He placed several pages on the table.
“She contacted me privately. She wanted to know whether the transfer could be reversed.””
I looked at the documents.
“Could it?””
“No. The pregnancy was already established.””
Adrian lowered his head.
I continued reading.
“Why didn't she tell me?””
Dr. Reed sighed.
“She intended to. But she was threatened.””
“By Vanessa?””
He nodded.
“And someone else.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
He glanced toward Eleanor.
“Your mother.””
I turned.
Eleanor began crying.
“Marcus, please.””
I stepped away from her.
Dr. Reed continued.
“Mrs. Carter visited the clinic after Emily discovered the discrepancy. She demanded that we keep the matter confidential.””
“Why?””
“Because she believed the scandal would destroy the family's reputation.””
I felt sick.
“So she protected Vanessa?””
“She believed Vanessa had acted out of desperation. She thought the matter could be resolved privately.””
I looked toward my mother.
“By allowing Emily to carry a pregnancy she hadn't consented to?””
Eleanor covered her mouth.
“I didn't understand what she had done.””
Dr. Reed shook his head.
“You were given the original consent forms.””
My mother began sobbing.
I turned back to the doctor.
“What happened on the final night?””
Dr. Reed opened another folder.
“Emily was admitted after experiencing severe complications. She was frightened, but she was stable when she arrived.””
I remembered that night.
I had been in New York, negotiating a major commercial development.
My mother had called to tell me Emily was experiencing discomfort but that the doctors were handling everything.
I had boarded the first available flight.
By the time I reached the hospital, Emily was gone.
I had never forgiven myself for not being there.
“Who was with her?””
Dr. Reed looked at Vanessa.
“Mrs. Carter.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“That's a lie.””
He removed a printed visitor log.
“Your signature is here.””
I stared at it.
“Why was she there?””
Dr. Reed hesitated.
“She told Emily that she had arranged a private transfer to another medical facility. Emily refused.””
“Why?””
“Because she suspected Vanessa was planning to remove her from the clinic before the investigation could begin.””
My throat tightened.
“What happened next?””
Dr. Reed lowered his voice.
“Emily asked to call you.””
I closed my eyes.
“Did she?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't I receive the call?””
He looked down.
“Because the telephone line in her room had been disconnected.””
I stared at him.
“Who disconnected it?””
Dr. Reed didn't answer.
I looked at Vanessa.
She was standing near the window, her hands clenched.
“Did you?””
She remained silent.
I took a step toward her.
“Did you disconnect my wife's phone?””
Officer Bennett moved closer.
“Mr. Carter, please.””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“She was confused.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“She was frightened. She kept asking for you. I thought she needed to calm down.””
“You had no right to stop her from calling me.””
“She was going to tell you everything!””
Her voice cracked.
The admission hung in the room.
Dr. Reed continued.
“Emily's condition deteriorated later that evening. The medical team attempted emergency intervention.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Could she have survived?””
He took a long breath.
“Possibly.””
I looked at him.
“Possibly?””
“If she had received treatment earlier, her chances would have been significantly better.””
The room became silent.
I couldn't hear anything except the blood rushing through my ears.
“Who delayed the treatment?””
Dr. Reed looked at his records.
“There was a request to transfer her to a private facility. It was not approved by the attending physician.””
“Who made the request?””
He placed another document on the table.
The signature belonged to Vanessa.
My wife.
The woman who had stood beside me at Emily's funeral.
The woman who had told me that everything possible had been done.
I looked at her.
“You delayed her treatment?””
Vanessa began shaking her head.
“I was trying to help.””
“By moving her?””
“She was going to expose me!””
I stared.
“So you knew she was in danger.””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“I didn't think she would die.””
The words came out so quietly that everyone heard them.
Officer Bennett immediately stepped forward.
“Mrs. Carter, you need to stop speaking until you've consulted your attorney.””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“I didn't kill her!””
Nobody had asked her that question.
Dr. Reed closed his file.
“There is one more thing.””
I felt exhausted.
“What now?””
He removed a small digital recorder from his bag.
“Emily gave this to me before her final admission. She asked me to keep it safe in case anything happened.””
I stared at the recorder.
“What's on it?””
“Her final message.””
My fingers trembled.
Dr. Reed pressed play.
For a moment, there was only static.
Then Emily's voice filled the room.
“Marcus, my love…”
I stopped breathing.
It was her.
The same gentle voice that used to wake me on Sunday mornings.
The same voice that sang Leo to sleep.
I closed my eyes.
“If you're hearing this, something has happened, and I wasn't able to tell you everything myself.””
A pause.
“I need you to know that Leo is our son. Nothing about his conception changes that. I chose you to raise him because I knew you would love him even when things became difficult.””
My eyes filled.
Then Emily continued.
“I made a mistake by hiding the truth. I thought I was protecting you, but I was only giving Vanessa more power.””
Vanessa began moving toward the recorder.
Officer Bennett blocked her.
Emily's voice continued.
“She told me that if I exposed what happened at the clinic, she would make sure Leo was taken away from you. She said she had people who could make me look unstable.””
I looked at Adrian.
He was crying silently.
Then Emily said something that made my entire body go cold.
“There is something else, Marcus. Vanessa wasn't acting alone.””
A pause.
“Your mother knew. But she wasn't the person who started this.””
I looked at Eleanor.
She had stopped crying.
She was staring at the recorder.
Emily's voice became weaker.
“The person who arranged the original transfer was someone we both trusted. Someone who had access to our financial accounts, our medical information, and the family trust.””
The recording crackled.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
“Marcus, if anything happens to me, don't let Leo near Uncle Peter.””
I froze.
Peter Carter.
My father's younger brother.
My business partner.
The man who had carried Leo down the aisle at my wedding to Vanessa.
The man who had stood beside me at Emily's funeral and promised that our family would survive.
I turned toward Dr. Reed.
“Why didn't you tell me this earlier?””
He looked devastated.
“Because I received a death threat after Emily's funeral.””
I stared.
“From whom?””
He hesitated.
Then he removed a final document from the folder.
It was a bank transfer confirmation.
A payment of $500,000 had been made to an offshore account two days after Emily died.
The sender was a company I recognized.
Carter Holdings.
The authorization carried my uncle's signature.
I looked toward the window.
Outside, another car had just arrived.
A familiar silver Mercedes.
My uncle's vehicle.
Robert hurried into the room.
“Mr. Carter, there's someone at the front gate.””
I didn't look away from the bank transfer.
“Who?””
Robert swallowed.
“Mr. Peter Carter.””
Then my phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
Marcus, I heard you're asking questions about Emily. Stop before you destroy what's left of your family.
Another message arrived immediately.
And whatever you do, don't let Adrian tell you what happened to the second embryo.
I looked up.
Adrian's face had turned pale.
I stared at him.
“Second embryo?””
He slowly nodded.
May you like
Then he whispered:
“Marcus, Leo may not be the only child Vanessa arranged to bring into this family.””
