Chapter 6: The Woman Who Wanted My Son's Inheritance
I ran.
Adrian followed me through the garage, and Officer Bennett came behind us with another officer.
The library door was open.
Nia stood near the fireplace, crying.
Leo was nowhere to be seen.
“Where is he?”” I shouted.
Nia pointed toward the staircase.
“Mrs. Vanessa took him upstairs.””
I turned toward the stairs.
Robert appeared from the hallway.
“Sir, she's in the master bedroom.””
“Did she leave the property?””
“No. But she locked the door.””
I took the stairs two at a time.
“Vanessa!””
No answer.
I reached the master bedroom and grabbed the handle.
Locked.
I knocked hard.
“Open this door!””
Her voice came from inside.
“Go away.””
“Where's Leo?””
“He's safe.””
“Open the door.””
“You need to listen to me, Marcus.””
I looked at Officer Bennett.
He motioned for me to step aside.
“Mrs. Carter, this is Officer Bennett. Please open the door.””
A pause.
Then Vanessa replied.
“I want my lawyer.””
“That's your right. But we need to make sure the child is safe.””
I heard something move inside.
Then Leo began crying.
“Daddy!””
I hit the door with my palm.
“I'm here, sweetheart!””
“Make her stop!””
Officer Bennett signaled to his partner.
“Prepare to enter if necessary.””
Vanessa suddenly unlocked the door.
She stood in the doorway holding Leo's wrist.
He was crying, and one of his shirt buttons had come undone.
“Don't come any closer,” she said.
I looked at her hand.
“Let him go.””
“He's my son too.””
“No, Vanessa. He's not.””
Her expression changed.
“You don't get to say that.””
“I get to protect him.””
She pulled Leo closer.
“He needs me.””
Leo shook his head.
“No, I don't.””
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed whatever performance she had been preparing.
Vanessa stared at him.
“Leo, don't be rude.””
He began crying harder.
“I want Daddy.””
I stepped forward.
“Let him go.””
She released his wrist abruptly.
Leo ran straight into my arms.
I lifted him and checked his hands.
There was a red mark around his wrist.
Officer Bennett stepped between us.
“Mrs. Carter, I need you to come downstairs.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You cannot be serious.””
“Please cooperate.””
She looked at me.
“You think you've won?””
I held Leo tightly.
“I think I'm finally seeing you.””
Her lips curled.
“You've never understood what I wanted.””
“Money?””
She laughed.
“Money? You really think this is about money?””
I said nothing.
She walked toward the dressing table and picked up a glass of water.
“You have no idea what Emily left behind.””
I looked at her.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa took a sip.
“Emily's father didn't just leave Leo a trust. He left him a controlling interest in Carter Holdings through a separate family arrangement.””
I frowned.
“That isn't true.””
She smiled.
“Ask your accountant.””
I remembered a complicated inheritance structure that had been created shortly before Emily died.
I had assumed it was simply part of her father's estate.
Vanessa continued.
“Emily knew her family was going to leave everything to Leo. She also knew you would eventually have complete control over it.””
“I'm his father.””
“And I was supposed to become his legal guardian.””
“By marrying me?””
She set the glass down.
“By making sure the boy was protected.””
I stared at her.
“You used him.””
Her expression hardened.
“I gave him a future.””
“You frightened him.””
“I disciplined him.””
“You played his dead mother's voice to make him believe she was calling him.””
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“He needed to understand that Emily wasn't coming back.””
I felt Leo tremble in my arms.
“You had no right.””
She shrugged.
“He was becoming attached to Nia. He was telling her things. He was becoming difficult.””
I looked at her.
“What things?””
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Officer Bennett moved closer.
“Mrs. Carter, I suggest you stop speaking.””
But she had already started.
“He kept asking about the basement. He kept saying he heard people arguing. He even found some of Emily's old letters.””
I froze.
“What letters?””
Vanessa looked at me.
Then she smiled.
“The ones she left in the study.””
I remembered the locked desk.
Emily's old writing desk.
I hadn't opened it since her death.
Vanessa continued.
“She wrote about Adrian. About the clinic. About the embryo. About everything.””
I stared at her.
“You read them?””
“Of course.””
“Why didn't you destroy them?””
Her smile faded.
“I thought I had.””
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Then I realized something.
If Vanessa had found Emily's letters, she had known the truth about Leo long before she married me.
She had entered my life with a plan.
She had watched me grieve.
She had comforted my son.
And while I believed I was building a new family, she had been studying the one Emily left behind.
I turned to Officer Bennett.
“I want her removed from this house.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You can't remove me. I own half of this property.””
“Not anymore.””
She raised an eyebrow.
“What?””
I looked toward the hallway.
“Adrian.””
He stepped into the doorway.
Vanessa's expression changed immediately.
“You.””
Adrian didn't answer.
She pointed at him.
“You have no right to be here.””
“Neither do you,” he replied.
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You abandoned your child.””
Adrian's face tightened.
“I didn't know I had one.””
“You should have stayed away.””
“Why? So you could steal his inheritance?””
She stepped toward him.
“You don't understand what Emily did.””
Adrian remained still.
“Then explain it.””
Vanessa's voice dropped.
“Emily wasn't supposed to have Leo.””
I felt Leo lift his head.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa looked at me.
Then at Adrian.
And for the first time, I saw something beyond anger in her eyes.
Panic.
“I said the clinic made a mistake.””
Adrian shook his head.
“No. You made a mistake.””
He reached into his coat and removed a document.
“Six years ago, you accessed Emily's fertility records without authorization. You changed a donor identification number. You then falsified the clinic's internal report.””
Vanessa went completely still.
I looked at the document.
“What does it mean?””
Adrian answered.
“It means someone attempted to substitute the embryo Emily had selected.””
My stomach turned.
“Whose embryo?””
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“That's what she doesn't want you to know.””
Vanessa lunged toward the paper.
Officer Bennett caught her arm.
“Ma'am, step back.””
She struggled.
“Give me that!””
Adrian held the document out of reach.
“There's a DNA report attached.””
I stared at him.
“What DNA report?””
He hesitated.
Then he spoke slowly.
“Leo is my biological son. But the woman who authorized the embryo transfer wasn't Emily.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She had stopped struggling.
Her face was completely white.
Adrian continued.
“The clinic's records show that Vanessa used her own authorization to approve the transfer. She had access to the donor records because she worked there.””
I couldn't breathe.
“Why would she do that?””
Adrian's eyes never left Vanessa.
“Because she wanted a child connected to Emily's inheritance, but she wanted to control what happened to him.””
Vanessa shook her head violently.
“That's not true.””
Adrian placed the report on the dressing table.
“Then explain why your signature is on the authorization.””
Officer Bennett examined the document.
Vanessa began crying again.
But this time, there was no performance in it.
She looked at me.
“Marcus, please.””
I stared at the woman I had married.
“Did you arrange Leo's conception?””
She shook her head.
“Not exactly.””
“What does that mean?””
She lowered her voice.
“I only changed the paperwork.””
I felt Leo's fingers tighten around my neck.
“Why?””
She looked at him.
Then she looked at me.
“Because Emily wasn't supposed to survive the pregnancy.””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“What?””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“I never intended for things to happen this way.””
I took a step backward.
“Are you saying you knew Emily was at risk?””
Vanessa said nothing.
“Did you know she could die?””
She looked down.
And then, in a voice barely above a whisper, she said:
“I knew the doctor had warned her.””
My heart began pounding.
I remembered Emily's final weeks.
The emergency appointments.
The medication.
The last phone call from the hospital.
The doctor had told me her death was caused by a sudden medical complication.
But now Vanessa was suggesting something much darker.
Officer Bennett immediately called for additional assistance.
Adrian moved toward me.
“Marcus, there's something else.””
I turned.
“What now?””
He pointed to the document.
“The DNA report isn't the only thing I found.””
He pulled another sheet from his coat.
It was an old hospital record.
The date was three days before Emily's death.
And beneath the doctor's name was a handwritten note:
Patient requested immediate discharge against medical advice. Family member insisted on proceeding.
I read the name of the family member.
My vision blurred.
It wasn't Vanessa.
It wasn't Richard.
It was someone I had trusted for years.
*My own mother.*
May you like
And beneath her signature was a second sentence:
Do not inform Marcus until the child is secured.
