Chapter 14: My Wife Was Never Buried

Dr. Samuel Carter lived in a small house behind the old St. Mary's medical complex.

Detective Harris arranged for officers to accompany us.

We arrived shortly before eleven that night.

The house was dark.

A single light burned in the upstairs bedroom.

Harris knocked.

No answer.

He knocked again.

"Dr. Carter? Police.""

A curtain moved.

Then the door opened.

An elderly man stood in the doorway.

He looked at the officers.

Then his eyes settled on me.

"Marcus.""

I stepped forward.

"You know who I am?""

He nodded.

"I've been expecting you.""

"Where is my wife?""

His expression changed.

"Come inside.""

Detective Harris immediately objected.

"We're conducting an official inquiry.""

Carter nodded.

"Then you'll want to hear what I have to say.""

Inside, the house smelled of old books and antiseptic.

A framed photograph hung above the fireplace.

It showed Dr. Carter standing beside Emily.

She was alive.

Older than I remembered her, thinner, with silver beginning to appear in her hair.

But unmistakably Emily.

I grabbed the frame.

"When was this taken?""

"Eight months ago.""

My hands shook.

"Where is she?""

Carter sat down.

"She's been living under medical supervision.""

"Why?""

"Because her condition became worse after the incident at St. Mary's.""

"What incident?""

Carter looked at Detective Harris.

"May I explain?""

Harris nodded.

Carter folded his hands.

"Emily's medical records were altered years ago. Her heart condition was real, but the medication she received during her final months was deliberately changed.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Vanessa?""

Carter shook his head.

"Vanessa delivered the medication. But she wasn't the person who changed it.""

"Who was?""

"Daniel.""

I looked at him.

"Why did the death certificate say Emily died?""

Carter lowered his eyes.

"Because we needed to make Daniel believe she was dead.""

I couldn't speak.

Carter continued.

"Emily suffered a severe cardiac episode. Her condition was critical. Daniel was monitoring the hospital, and we knew he would return if he discovered she had survived.""

"So you faked her death?""

"Yes.""

"Her funeral?""

"A closed casket.""

"The grave?""

"Empty.""

I stepped backward.

For almost two years, I had visited an empty grave.

I had cried beside a stone that contained nothing.

I had told Maya her mother was watching over her.

And Emily had been alive somewhere.

Why?

"Why didn't she contact me?""

Carter looked genuinely sorry.

"She wanted to. Many times.""

"Then why didn't she?""

"Because Daniel threatened to kill the children if she did.""

I stared at him.

"All three?""

Carter nodded.

"And he knew you were the one person who could help her.""

"Then why keep me in the dark?""

"Because Daniel had been monitoring your communications. Emily believed that if she contacted you, he would discover her location.""

I turned away.

I couldn't decide whether I was relieved or furious.

Both feelings were fighting inside my chest.

"Where is she now?""

Carter hesitated.

"At the private recovery center.""

"Take me there.""

"Marcus—"

"Now.""

Detective Harris stepped forward.

"We'll accompany you.""

Carter nodded.

He retrieved his coat.

Before leaving, he opened a locked drawer and removed a thick envelope.

"Emily asked me to give you this if you ever discovered the truth.""

I took it.

Inside was a photograph of Emily holding three newborn babies.

One girl wore a pink blanket.

The other wore blue.

The boy was wrapped in white.

On the back, she had written:

My three miracles. Whatever happens, never let anyone separate them again.

I pressed the photograph against my chest.

Then I noticed a second page.

It was a handwritten statement.

Marcus,

I need you to understand something about the children.

They are not three separate stories. They are one family.

Daniel switched their identities because he wanted to control the trust established by our biological family. But the trust was never his to control.

I looked up.

"What trust?""

Carter answered.

"The Reed family trust.""

"How much money?""

"Enough to make Daniel desperate.""

He explained that the original trust had been established for Emily's children.

But the beneficiary names had been altered after the hospital incident.

Daniel had spent years trying to make himself the legal guardian of the children so he could claim the assets.

The original documents were in Room 219.

The recording was evidence of the fraud.

And the children were the key to proving the truth.

We arrived at the recovery center just before midnight.

A nurse led us down a quiet hallway.

At the end was a private room.

She knocked softly.

"Emily? You have visitors.""

The door opened.

And there she was.

My wife.

Alive.

She was sitting beside a window, wearing a pale blue cardigan.

Her hair was shorter.

Her face thinner.

But her eyes were exactly the same.

For a moment, I couldn't move.

Emily looked at me.

Then she whispered my name.

"Marcus.""

I walked toward her.

"You're alive.""

She began crying.

"I am.""

I stopped in front of her.

"Do you know what I went through?""

She lowered her head.

"I know.""

"You let me bury you.""

"I had no choice.""

"You let Maya grow up without her mother.""

Emily covered her mouth.

"I know.""

I wanted to hug her.

I wanted to shake her.

I wanted to ask a thousand questions.

Instead, I stood there, trembling.

Finally, she reached for my hand.

"Where is Maya?""

"Safe.""

"Olivia?""

"Safe.""

"And Noah?""

I looked at her.

"We found him.""

Emily began sobbing.

"All three?""

I nodded.

"All three.""

She closed her eyes.

For the first time that night, she smiled.

Then I asked the question that had been burning inside me.

"Why did you let Vanessa become my wife?""

Emily's smile disappeared.

"Vanessa?""

"She said you asked her to stay close to Maya.""

Emily shook her head.

"No.""

I stared.

"What?""

"I never asked Vanessa to marry you.""

"She said—"

"Vanessa was supposed to protect Maya. But I discovered she had been communicating with Daniel again.""

I stepped back.

"Then why didn't you warn me?""

Emily looked toward the door.

"Because I thought she would eventually tell you.""

She reached beneath her pillow and removed a small photograph.

It showed Vanessa standing beside a man.

Not Daniel.

Someone else.

I recognized him immediately.

Thomas.

But this photograph had been taken recently.

And they were standing outside the recovery center.

Emily's voice trembled.

"Marcus, Thomas wasn't helping me.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"He was the one who told Daniel where I was.""

My stomach dropped.

"Why?""

Emily looked directly into my eyes.

"Because Thomas is the father of the third child.""

I couldn't breathe.

"Thomas is Noah's biological father?""

Emily nodded.

"And there's something else.""

She handed me the photograph.

On the back was a handwritten note.

*THE MAN WHO TOOK NOAH IS NOT DANIEL.*

I looked at her.

"Then who?""

Emily swallowed.

"Thomas.""

At that exact moment, Detective Harris received a call.

He listened for several seconds.

Then his face turned pale.

"Marcus.""

"What?""

"Thomas has taken Noah.""

Emily screamed.

"No!""

The nurse rushed into the room.

Emily grabbed my hand.

"He's going to the railway station.""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

She began crying.

"Because he knows the truth about the fourth child.""

I froze.

"Emily, there is no fourth child.""

She shook her head.

"Yes, Marcus.""

She looked toward the window.

"There is.""

May you like

Then she whispered:

"And that child is yours.""
