Chapter 8: The Woman Who Signed My Name

Detective Harris ordered Vanessa's phone and personal documents collected as evidence.

She didn't resist.

She simply sat in the interview room, staring at the table.

I stood by the window.

Outside, the hospital parking lot was filling with afternoon traffic.

People were leaving appointments.

Parents were carrying children.

A little boy ran toward his father, laughing.

I turned away.

"Vanessa.""

She lifted her head.

"Tell me the truth.""

Her lips trembled.

"I've been trying to.""

"No. You've been telling me pieces of the truth whenever someone else forces you to.""

She wiped her cheeks.

"Emily asked me to help her.""

"With what?""

"Protecting Maya.""

I laughed bitterly.

"By putting her in a freezer?""

She flinched.

"I know what I did was terrible.""

"Then why did you do it?""

Vanessa looked down.

"Because I found out Maya had discovered the key.""

"That doesn't explain anything.""

"Emily left something else inside Room 219. Something that could destroy Daniel.""

I leaned forward.

"What?""

"A recording.""

I looked at her.

"What recording?""

"Emily recorded Daniel threatening her. He admitted that he had arranged the false hospital records. He also admitted that he had paid someone to alter the original birth documents.""

"Why didn't you tell the police?""

"Because he threatened to kill Maya.""

I stared at her.

"And you believed him?""

Vanessa nodded.

"He showed me photographs of the house. He knew where Maya slept. He knew what time you left for work.""

I felt my hands tighten.

"How long has this been happening?""

"Years.""

"Since before Emily died?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes.""

I stepped back.

"Then why did you marry me?""

She looked at me with desperate eyes.

"Because I loved you.""

I shook my head.

"Don't.""

"It's true.""

"You knew my daughter was in danger. You knew someone was trying to take her. And you decided the best way to protect her was to become my wife?""

Vanessa started crying.

"Emily asked me to stay close to you.""

I stopped.

"What?""

"She believed Daniel would eventually come back. She wanted someone watching over Maya.""

"She asked you to marry me?""

"No.""

Vanessa swallowed.

"She asked me to keep Maya safe. I thought I could do that better if I became part of the family.""

I stared at her.

"And the photograph in the lockbox?""

"Emily took it after she discovered I had started communicating with Daniel again.""

"Why?""

"Because he offered me a deal.""

"What deal?""

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"He said if I helped him recover the original recording, he'd leave Maya alone.""

I looked at her.

"That's why you wanted the key.""

She nodded.

"And the collar?""

"I saw Maya hiding it. I knew Emily had put something inside.""

I felt sick.

"You knew Luna was in the freezer.""

Vanessa covered her face.

"I panicked. I wanted Maya to let go of the collar.""

"You could have killed that animal.""

"I know.""

"And you made my daughter watch.""

She couldn't look at me.

I turned away.

Detective Harris entered with a folder.

"We've received information from the hospital.""

Vanessa immediately looked up.

"What information?""

Harris opened the folder.

"Dr. Alan Whitmore has agreed to speak with us.""

Vanessa went pale.

"He's alive?""

"Yes.""

"Where?""

"His home. We've arranged an interview.""

He placed a photograph on the table.

An older man with silver hair stood outside a modest house.

I recognized him from the old photograph.

Dr. Whitmore.

Harris continued.

"He has provided preliminary information about the records from Maya's birth.""

"What did he say?"" I asked.

"The original birth certificate was altered after the delivery.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She stared at the photograph.

"Who was listed as the father originally?""

Harris hesitated.

"Daniel Reed.""

The room went silent.

I sat down.

Daniel.

Not me.

The man who was supposedly dead.

The man who had contacted me.

The man who had prepared a nursery for Maya.

My stomach turned.

"Then Maya is his daughter?""

"That's what the original record suggests. But we'll need DNA testing to establish biological relationships.""

Vanessa began shaking her head.

"No.""

Harris looked at her.

"What?""

"That's not possible.""

"Why?""

Vanessa stood.

"Because Daniel isn't Maya's father.""

I looked at her.

"Then who is?""

She covered her mouth.

"Emily never told me.""

Harris closed the folder.

"Mrs. Ellison, you're going to need to explain everything you know about the pregnancy and the hospital arrangement.""

Vanessa sat down again.

"I can show you.""

She reached into her handbag and removed a small notebook.

Its cover was worn.

The pages were filled with handwritten dates, names, and short notes.

She opened it to a page near the back.

There was a list of five names.

Beside each name was a date.

One name was crossed out.

Another had a question mark.

And the final name had been circled.

*MARCUS ELLISON.*

I stared at it.

"What is this?""

Vanessa's voice trembled.

"Emily kept a record of everyone who knew about Maya's birth.""

"Why is my name circled?""

"Because you were the only person she trusted enough to become Maya's legal father.""

I looked at Detective Harris.

"Does that mean the document was forged?""

He nodded slowly.

"Possibly. The original hospital records may help us determine that.""

Vanessa turned another page.

There was a photograph attached to it.

A young man stood beside Emily outside St. Mary's.

He was wearing a dark sweater.

His face was partially turned away.

But I recognized him.

Not because I had met him.

Because he was the man in the photograph Daniel had sent me.

The same man standing outside my house.

Except in this picture, he looked younger.

Much younger.

Beneath the photograph, Emily had written:

The man who saved Maya's life.

I stared.

"Who is he?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"His name is Thomas.""

"Thomas what?""

"I don't know.""

"Where is he now?""

She shook her head.

"Emily never told me.""

Detective Harris studied the photograph.

Then he noticed something in the background.

A hospital sign.

And a date stamped in the corner.

November 8, 2019.

The day Maya was born.

He turned the photograph over.

On the back, Emily had written a single sentence.

*IF MARCUS EVER FINDS THIS, TELL HIM THE MAN HE'S BEEN LOOKING FOR HAS BEEN IN HIS HOUSE ALL ALONG.*

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"Who's been in my house?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Then Detective Harris's radio crackled.

An officer had identified the unknown man in the photograph.

His full name was Thomas Reed.

And he wasn't just connected to Daniel.

He had been working as a security contractor at the hospital when Maya was born.

But the officer had discovered something else.

Thomas Reed had been living under a different name.

For the past two years.

In the same neighborhood as me.

Detective Harris looked up.

"Mr. Ellison, do you know a man named Thomas?""

I thought about the neighbors.

The delivery drivers.

The people who came and went.

Then one face appeared in my mind.

A man who had helped me carry furniture into the house.

A man who had attended Maya's birthday parties.

A man who had once offered to fix the broken lock on our garden gate.

I whispered his name.

"Thomas...""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Who?""

May you like

I stared at her.

"Our neighbor.""
