Chapter 3: The Woman in the Hospital Photograph
I drove home so fast that I barely remembered the journey.
When I arrived, two police officers were standing outside my house.
Vanessa was on the front porch, wrapped in a blanket.
Her hair was disheveled.
Her eyes were red.
The moment she saw me, she rushed forward.
"Marcus!""
"Where is Maya?""
"They're looking for her.""
"Where?""
"I don't know!""
I grabbed her shoulders.
"Tell me exactly what happened.""
Vanessa looked at the officers.
One of them stepped closer.
"Sir, we need you to calm down.""
I released her.
Then I turned back to my wife.
"You told me Maya was missing. Did you see her leave?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I woke up and her bed was empty.""
"Did you check the security cameras?""
"The cameras aren't working.""
"Since when?""
"Since yesterday.""
I stared at her.
Convenient.
The older officer introduced himself as Detective Harris.
"Mr. Ellison, we have officers checking the surrounding streets. Do you know anyone who might have taken your daughter?""
I thought about the woman in the photograph.
Emily.
Vanessa.
The hospital.
The adoption records.
"Yes," I said slowly.
"I think I might.""
I showed him the photograph from Room 219.
He studied it.
"Who are these women?""
"My late wife and Vanessa.""
"And the child?""
I shook my head.
"I don't know.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Don't show him that.""
Detective Harris looked at her.
"Why not?""
"It's a private family matter.""
"Your six-year-old stepdaughter is missing. There are no private family matters right now.""
Vanessa went quiet.
I pulled the folder from my jacket and handed the detective the laboratory report.
He read it carefully.
"Where did you get this?""
"From a storage unit my late wife rented.""
Vanessa's face drained of color.
Detective Harris noticed.
"Mrs. Ellison, have you seen this document before?""
She hesitated.
"No.""
"Are you certain?""
"Yes.""
I looked at her.
"You were at the storage facility yesterday.""
Her head snapped toward me.
"What?""
"The cameras recorded you.""
She took a step backward.
I continued.
"You went into Room 219 with Maya.""
"That's not what happened.""
"Then explain it.""
Vanessa looked at the officers.
"I was protecting her.""
"From whom?""
"From Emily.""
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Detective Harris asked quietly, "Emily is deceased, correct?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes.""
"And you believe she poses a threat to the child?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"No. But what she left behind does.""
I felt a chill move through me.
"What did she leave behind?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"The truth.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Everyone seems to know the truth except me.""
She wiped her cheeks.
"Emily wasn't supposed to raise Maya.""
I stepped closer.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa took a breath.
"Before you met Emily, she and I were separated when we were children. We were adopted into different families. I spent years trying to find her.""
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"Because she hated talking about her childhood.""
"And Maya?""
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"Emily got pregnant before she met you.""
I stared at her.
"That's impossible.""
"She was young. She was scared. The father disappeared. She had no money, no support, and no family.""
"Emily told me she had Maya after we met.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"She lied.""
My thoughts raced.
Maya had been born six years earlier.
Emily and I had met almost seven years ago.
There was a period of several months when we had been apart.
But I had never questioned the timeline.
I had believed Maya was ours.
And the birth certificate said I was her father.
"Why would Emily put my name on the birth certificate?""
Vanessa looked down.
"Because she wanted you to believe Maya was yours.""
My throat tightened.
Detective Harris raised a hand.
"Let's slow down. Do you have evidence of what you're claiming?""
Vanessa nodded.
"There's a hospital record.""
"Where?""
"At St. Mary's.""
I looked at her.
"Why didn't you tell me this before?""
"Because I knew what would happen.""
"What would happen?""
"You would leave.""
I stared at the woman I had married.
For two years, I had trusted her with the most precious person in my life.
I had allowed her to become part of Maya's daily routine.
I had believed she loved my daughter.
Now I couldn't tell whether she had ever loved me at all.
Detective Harris spoke into his radio.
"Check the hospital records and establish the relationship between the missing child and the adults involved.""
Then he turned to Vanessa.
"Did you take Maya to the storage facility yesterday?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Yes, but only because I wanted to show her something.""
"What?""
"The photograph.""
I frowned.
"What photograph?""
Vanessa reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded picture.
It showed two little girls sitting on a hospital bed.
Emily and Vanessa.
On the back was a handwritten date.
And beneath it, a name.
*MAYA.*
I took the picture.
"Why would Emily write Maya's name on a photograph from her childhood?""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
"Because the baby in that photograph wasn't Emily.""
My heart seemed to stop.
I looked at the picture again.
The younger girl was holding a newborn baby.
A small silver bracelet was wrapped around the infant's wrist.
I recognized that bracelet.
Emily had kept it in her jewelry box for years.
She told me it was the first gift her mother had ever given her.
But Vanessa was staring at the photograph as though it contained something much more important.
"That baby," she whispered, "was me.""
I looked up.
"Then who was the little girl holding you?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Emily.""
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
The photograph was from a hospital.
The two girls were children.
And the baby was wearing a bracelet I had seen in Emily's possessions.
I turned the photograph over.
There was another sentence written underneath the date.
The day they told us our sister was dead.
My stomach dropped.
Vanessa continued, her voice barely audible.
"They told us our mother had died giving birth. They separated us. Emily was adopted first. I was placed in foster care.""
"Then how did you find each other?""
"I found Emily years later. But by then, she had discovered something about our family.""
"What?""
Vanessa looked toward the road.
"That the baby everyone believed had died wasn't dead.""
I stared at her.
"Who?""
She looked directly into my eyes.
"Maya.""
The world seemed to tilt.
Before I could ask another question, Detective Harris's radio crackled.
A patrol officer had found something.
A vehicle matching Vanessa's description had been spotted near the old St. Mary's hospital.
And inside it was a pink backpack.
Maya's backpack.
Detective Harris immediately ordered two officers to the location.
I turned toward Vanessa.
"You knew where she was.""
Vanessa shook her head desperately.
"No, Marcus. I swear.""
"Then why is her backpack there?""
She began crying again.
"I think she's gone to find her mother.""
I froze.
"Her mother is dead.""
Vanessa looked at me with an expression I couldn't understand.
Then she whispered:
"Not the mother on her birth certificate.""
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small hospital identification bracelet.
The plastic was yellowed with age.
A name was printed across it.
*BABY GIRL — ELLISON.*
But beneath that name was a second line.
A line that made me question everything I had ever believed about my daughter.
*BIOLOGICAL MOTHER: VANESSA REED.*
I stared at the bracelet.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
She covered her mouth.
"I never wanted you to find out this way.""
And before I could say another word, my phone rang.
It was an unfamiliar number.
I answered immediately.
A little girl's voice came through the speaker.
"Daddy?""
My knees nearly gave way.
"Maya! Baby, where are you?""
She was crying.
"Daddy, I'm at the hospital.""
"Stay exactly where you are. I'm coming.""
Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.
"Daddy, there's a lady here who looks just like Mommy.""
The call crackled.
I heard a door open.
A woman's voice spoke in the background.
And then Maya said the words that would change everything.
May you like
"She says she's my real mother.""
The call went dead.
