Chapter 7: The Signature I Never Made
I stared at the document on my phone until the words began to blur.
*I hereby surrender all parental rights to the child identified as Baby Girl Ellison.*
My name was at the bottom.
My signature.
Even the small curve beneath the final letter looked like mine.
But I had never signed it.
"Detective," I said, holding out the phone.
"Look at this.""
Harris examined the image.
His expression hardened.
"Where did you get it?""
"The man who took Maya sent it.""
He enlarged the photograph.
"Do you recognize the witness?""
I looked at the second signature.
Emily Ellison.
My late wife's handwriting.
There was a hospital stamp beneath both signatures.
St. Mary's Medical Center.
I felt sick.
"Is this real?""
Harris didn't answer immediately.
"We'll need the original document and an expert examination. A photograph isn't enough to establish authenticity.""
Vanessa was standing behind us.
She looked as though she might collapse.
"Marcus," she whispered.
I turned.
"Did you know about this?""
She shook her head.
"Not that document.""
"Not that document?""
"I knew there was a form.""
I stared at her.
"What form?""
Vanessa sat down.
"Before Maya was born, Emily told me she had made an agreement with Daniel.""
"What kind of agreement?""
"She said he would leave her alone if she signed something.""
"Something surrendering her child?""
Vanessa covered her mouth.
"I don't know exactly what she signed.""
I grabbed the edge of the table.
"You're telling me my wife might have given our daughter away before she was even born?""
"She didn't give Maya away!""
"Then explain the document!""
Vanessa began crying.
"Emily was desperate. Daniel threatened her. He told her he could make the baby disappear.""
I stared at her.
"And you helped him?""
"No!""
"Then why did you let him take her?""
Vanessa looked up.
"I didn't know he had her.""
Detective Harris raised his hand.
"Enough. Mrs. Ellison, I need you to explain your relationship with Daniel and the events surrounding Maya's birth.""
Vanessa swallowed.
"He contacted me two months before Emily gave birth. He said he wanted to make things right with our family.""
"How?""
"He offered money.""
"How much?""
"Two hundred thousand dollars.""
I felt my stomach turn.
"For what?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"For Maya.""
The room went silent.
"He said Emily had no right to keep the baby. He claimed the child belonged to the family.""
"Did Emily agree?""
"She pretended to.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"She needed time. She wanted to find someone who could help her.""
"Who?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"She never told me.""
I thought about the locked closet.
The photograph.
The key hidden inside Luna's collar.
Emily had known that someone would eventually come looking.
She had built a trail for me to follow.
But why hadn't she simply told me?
Why leave me to discover the truth after her death?
Detective Harris's radio crackled.
An officer had traced the number used to contact me.
The phone was registered to a prepaid account, but the signal had briefly connected to a tower near the old St. Mary's property.
Harris immediately ordered a surveillance team.
Then he turned to Vanessa.
"Did Daniel ever tell you where he planned to take Maya?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"There's a house.""
"Where?""
"Outside town. Near the old railway line.""
"Address?""
"I don't know the exact number. But it's a white house with a red gate.""
Harris radioed the description.
I stood.
"I'm going with you.""
"No," he said firmly.
"That's my daughter.""
"And that's precisely why you need to stay out of an active police operation.""
I stepped closer.
"You expect me to sit here?""
"I expect you not to become another person we have to rescue.""
I looked away.
For the first time, I understood how helpless Emily must have felt when she realized someone wanted to take Maya.
A few minutes later, Harris received another call.
His expression changed.
"What do you mean, the house is empty?""
He listened.
Then his jaw tightened.
"Search the property. Every room. Check the garage.""
He ended the call.
I looked at him.
"Was Maya there?""
"No.""
Vanessa began sobbing.
Harris continued.
"But we found something.""
"What?""
"A nursery.""
My stomach tightened.
He showed me a photograph taken by one of the officers.
A small bedroom.
White walls.
A pink bed.
A shelf filled with stuffed animals.
And above the bed was a framed photograph.
Maya.
Not a recent picture.
One taken when she was three.
The age she had been when Emily died.
Underneath the photograph was a handwritten message.
*WELCOME HOME, LITTLE ONE.*
I stared at it.
Someone had prepared that room years ago.
Someone had expected Maya to live there.
Then I noticed another object in the photograph.
A wooden jewelry box.
I recognized it immediately.
It had belonged to Emily.
I had seen it on her bedside table for years.
After her funeral, it disappeared.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Who took Emily's jewelry box?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
Detective Harris zoomed in.
The box was open.
Inside was a silver bracelet.
The same bracelet I had seen in the hospital photograph.
And beside it was a small folded piece of paper.
Harris read the words aloud.
"Property of Daniel Reed.""
I felt a cold pressure in my chest.
My phone rang again.
This time, the number was different.
I answered.
A man's voice spoke.
"Marcus, I believe you've seen the room.""
"Where is Maya?""
"Closer to her real home than she's ever been.""
"Bring her back.""
"That depends on you.""
"What do you want?""
"The original consent form.""
I looked at the photograph on my phone.
"You already have a copy.""
"I want the original.""
"Why?""
A pause.
Then the man said something that changed the entire direction of the conversation.
"Because the signature on that form isn't yours.""
I went still.
"What?""
"Someone signed your name, Marcus. And Emily witnessed it.""
"Who signed it?""
The man chuckled softly.
"That's the question you should have asked six years ago.""
Then the line went dead.
A message arrived seconds later.
It contained a photograph of the original document.
The signature at the bottom was unmistakable.
But beneath it, in tiny handwriting, was a note.
*SIGNED BY LEGAL GUARDIAN: VANESSA REED.*
I looked at my wife.
She was already shaking her head.
"Marcus, please...""
May you like
And for the first time, I wondered whether Vanessa had ever intended to raise Maya with me.
Or whether she had married me to keep control of the child she believed belonged to her.
