Chapter 15: The Daughter Who Was Never on the Records

I didn't ask another question.

I ran.

Detective Harris was already calling his officers.

Emily tried to stand, but the nurse gently held her back.

"Marcus!"" she cried.

I turned.

She was holding the photograph of the three newborn babies.

"Find Noah. And don't let Thomas take him.""

I nodded.

Then I left.

The railway station was almost deserted when we arrived.

A light rain fell across the empty platforms.

Police vehicles surrounded the building.

Detective Harris approached me.

"Thomas's car was spotted near the eastern entrance.""

"Where's Noah?""

"We don't know.""

I looked toward the abandoned ticket office.

A light was burning inside.

Then I heard a child crying.

I ran.

Thomas stood near the old ticket counter.

Noah was beside him.

The little boy was holding a blue toy train.

"Thomas!""

He turned.

For a moment, his face looked almost relieved.

"Marcus.""

"Let him go.""

Thomas looked down at Noah.

"He's my son.""

I stepped closer.

"He's a child.""

"I know.""

"Then stop using him.""

Thomas shook his head.

"You still don't understand.""

"Explain it.""

He looked at the officers approaching behind me.

Then he sighed.

"Daniel never wanted the children for money alone.""

"Emily told me about the trust.""

Thomas nodded.

"The trust was created by your family, Marcus.""

I froze.

"What?""

He reached into his jacket and removed an old document.

"Your grandfather established it. Not Daniel.""

I stared at the paper.

The family name was familiar.

My grandfather had owned several properties.

I'd been told everything had been sold after his death.

But the document showed something different.

A private trust had been established for his descendants.

And the primary beneficiary was listed as a child born on November 8, 2019.

I looked at Thomas.

"Why would my grandfather establish a trust for a child who hadn't been born?""

"Because he knew Emily was pregnant.""

My heart pounded.

"How?""

Thomas looked toward the ceiling.

"Your grandfather and Daniel were business partners.""

I felt sick.

The entire family history seemed to be collapsing around me.

"Then why did Daniel take the children?""

"Because he believed the trust belonged to him. He had manipulated the hospital records to make himself appear to be the biological father.""

"But he wasn't.""

"No.""

Thomas looked down at Noah.

"He was trying to claim a fortune that belonged to the children.""

I stared at him.

"And you helped him?""

Thomas's face hardened.

"I helped Emily.""

"By taking Noah?""

"By keeping him alive.""

He explained that he had discovered the third child was the one Daniel wanted most.

Noah carried a rare genetic marker that had been documented in my grandfather's medical records.

It was the marker required to activate the original trust.

Daniel had spent years searching for him.

Thomas had taken the boy and hidden him.

But when Emily discovered the truth, Thomas realized he could no longer keep the secret.

"So you brought him here?""

Thomas nodded.

"I wanted you to know.""

"Then why did Emily say you betrayed her?""

Thomas looked away.

"Because I did.""

He admitted that he had provided Daniel with information about Emily's location in exchange for a promise that the children would be left alone.

But Daniel had broken that promise.

Instead, he had taken Maya and tried to claim Olivia.

I looked at Noah.

"Are you okay, buddy?""

The boy nodded.

Then he held out the toy train.

"Mommy said you would know this.""

I took it.

A small inscription was engraved beneath the wheels.

*FOR MARCUS — FROM YOUR GRANDFATHER.*

I stared at it.

My grandfather had given me this train when I was a child.

I had lost it years ago.

Or so I thought.

I looked at Thomas.

"Where did you get this?""

"Emily kept it.""

I turned the train over.

A small compartment opened beneath the carriage.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

I carefully removed it.

It was a birth record.

Not Maya's.

Not Olivia's.

A fourth child.

The name was handwritten.

*LILY ELLISON.*

Mother: Emily Ellison.

Father: Marcus Ellison.

Date of birth: November 8, 2019.

I stared at the document.

"Who is Lily?""

Thomas looked at me.

"The fourth child.""

I shook my head.

"Emily gave birth to three babies.""

Thomas nodded.

"Three babies were recorded in the hospital.""

"Then who is Lily?""

He took a breath.

"Emily had another child before the triplets.""

I felt the ground shift.

"Another child?""

"Before she met you, Emily gave birth to a little girl. She believed the baby had died during delivery.""

I stared at the document.

"That's impossible.""

Thomas shook his head.

"Daniel arranged for the baby to be taken. She survived.""

I looked down at the name.

Lily.

My phone rang.

The caller ID showed Emily.

I answered.

"Marcus?""

"I'm at the station.""

"Did you find Noah?""

"Yes.""

She began crying.

"Thank God.""

I looked at the birth record.

"Emily, who is Lily?""

Silence.

Then a quiet sob.

"She's our daughter.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I didn't know she was alive until recently.""

"Where is she?""

Emily took a shaky breath.

"At the railway station.""

I looked around.

"What?""

"Marcus, she's there. She came looking for you.""

A movement caught my attention.

At the far end of the platform stood a young woman.

Perhaps twenty-one.

Dark hair.

A pale coat.

She was holding a photograph.

The same photograph from Room 219.

I walked toward her slowly.

"Are you Lily?""

She nodded.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"You're Marcus?""

I nodded.

She held out the photograph.

It showed Emily holding a newborn baby.

On the back was a message.

One day, your father will come looking for you.

I couldn't speak.

Lily looked at me.

"I've been waiting for years.""

I reached for her hand.

"Who raised you?""

"A woman named Rachel.""

I froze.

Rachel Reed.

The woman who had claimed to be Maya's grandmother.

"Did she know who you were?""

Lily nodded.

"She told me when I turned eighteen.""

I swallowed.

"Why didn't she contact me?""

"She said she was afraid.""

Lily looked toward Thomas.

Then she whispered:

"She also told me that one of the children was never supposed to be born.""

I stared.

"What do you mean?""

Lily handed me another document.

It was a medical report.

The final page contained a handwritten note from Emily.

*LILY WAS THE FIRST CHILD. MAYA, OLIVIA, AND NOAH WERE BORN SIX YEARS LATER.*

I looked at the dates.

The triplets had been born on November 8, 2019.

Lily had been born years earlier.

She was not part of the triplets.

She was the child Daniel had taken before Emily ever met me.

And she was the reason the entire arrangement had begun.

Before I could ask another question, Detective Harris approached.

"We've got Daniel.""

I turned.

"Where?""

"At the old hospital. He was trying to access the original records.""

"And Vanessa?""

"She's there too.""

I looked toward Lily.

"Come with me.""

She nodded.

We returned to St. Mary's together.

Daniel was standing in the old records room when we entered.

He looked older than he had in the photographs.

But his expression was still cold.

Vanessa stood beside him.

Her hands were cuffed.

When she saw me, she lowered her head.

Daniel looked at Lily.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

"No," he whispered.

Lily stepped forward.

"Hello, Grandfather.""

Daniel took a step backward.

Detective Harris immediately restrained him.

I looked at Vanessa.

"What happened?""

She began crying.

"Daniel told me he would destroy the records if I helped him.""

"Why?""

"Because he knew Lily was alive.""

I turned toward Daniel.

"Why did you do all this?""

He laughed.

"Because your family had something that belonged to mine.""

I shook my head.

"They were children.""

"They were heirs.""

"Not property.""

His expression hardened.

"Your grandfather stole everything from me.""

I looked at the documents.

"No. You tried to steal everything from them.""

Detective Harris ordered the officers to secure the records.

Then he handed me a sealed envelope.

It had been recovered from the original Room 219 file.

My name was written across it.

Emily's final letter.

I opened it.

Marcus,

If you're reading this, then the children are finally together.

I'm sorry for every lie, every missing explanation, and every night you spent believing I was gone.

I wanted to tell you about Lily. I wanted to tell you about the triplets. I wanted to give you a normal family.

But Daniel made sure that every truth came with a threat.

You gave our children something he never could.

You gave them a home.

Blood may explain where a child comes from, but love decides who gets to call them family.

Please don't let what happened to us become the story our children remember.

Let them remember the day they finally found one another.

I love you.

Emily.

I lowered the letter.

Across the room, Lily was standing beside Noah.

Olivia had arrived with her adoptive parents.

And Maya was being carried into the room by Detective Harris.

The moment she saw me, she ran.

"Daddy!""

I dropped to my knees.

She crashed into my arms.

I held her and kissed her forehead.

Then I looked at the other children.

Four children.

Four lives.

Four names that had been hidden, changed, or stolen.

And one woman who had fought to keep them safe.

Vanessa approached slowly.

"Marcus.""

I looked at her.

She was crying.

"I'm sorry.""

I didn't answer.

She looked toward Maya.

"Can I say goodbye?""

Maya tightened her arms around my neck.

I gently shook my head.

"Not today.""

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

Detective Harris led her away.

Daniel was arrested for fraud, kidnapping, evidence tampering, and conspiracy. The investigation into Emily's medical records and the hospital's altered birth documents continued for months.

Thomas cooperated with the authorities, although he still faced serious charges for his role in hiding the children and deceiving the families involved.

The DNA tests eventually confirmed what Emily had written.

Maya, Olivia, and Noah were her biological children.

Lily was her firstborn daughter.

And I was the biological father of the triplets, though not Lily.

But none of those results changed what mattered most.

I was their father.

All four of them wanted me to be.

Six months later, on a bright Sunday afternoon, our house was filled with noise.

Olivia was teaching Noah how to play a board game.

Lily was helping Maya decorate cupcakes.

Luna was sleeping on the sofa, wearing her familiar red collar.

I stood in the kitchen watching them.

Maya ran over.

"Daddy, can we take a family picture?""

"Of course.""

She gathered everyone in the living room.

Then she looked at Luna.

"She has to be in it too.""

I laughed.

"Naturally.""

We arranged ourselves in front of the fireplace.

Four children.

One cat.

And a place beside me that remained empty.

Emily's photograph stood on the mantel.

Maya looked up at it.

"Do you think Mommy can see us?""

I knelt beside her.

"I think she'd be very happy.""

Maya smiled.

Then she whispered something that nearly broke my heart.

"She told me once that secrets are like locked doors. Sometimes people lock them because they're afraid. But love finds the key.""

I looked at Luna's collar.

The little brass key was no longer hidden.

It rested inside a glass box beside Emily's photograph.

I had thought that key would reveal a terrible secret.

Instead, it had led me back to the people I thought I had lost.

I pulled Maya into my arms.

May you like

"Your mom was right, sweetheart.""

And for the first time in two years, the house felt whole again.
