Chapter 9: The Man Next Door

His name was Thomas Bennett.

At least, that was what everyone in our neighborhood called him.

He lived three houses down from mine in a modest brick home with a white fence and a small garden.

He had introduced himself shortly after Emily died.

He'd been kind.

Quiet.

Always willing to help.

When Maya was four, he'd built her a wooden dollhouse for her birthday.

When Luna got sick, he'd recommended a veterinarian.

And when Vanessa and I got married, he'd stood beside me as one of the witnesses.

I had trusted him.

Now I couldn't stop thinking about the photograph.

Thomas Reed.

The man who saved Maya's life.

The man who had supposedly been in my house all along.

Detective Harris immediately arranged for officers to secure Thomas's property.

"Do not approach him," he warned me.

"He's my neighbor.""

"That doesn't make him harmless.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Did you know?""

She shook her head.

"Not until I saw the photograph.""

"You're telling me you've never recognized him?""

"His appearance changed. He used another name.""

"How long have you known him?""

"Since the hospital.""

I stared.

"What?""

Vanessa looked down.

"Thomas worked with Daniel. But he wasn't like him.""

"Then why was he involved?""

"Because he helped Emily escape.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Escape from what?""

Vanessa took a breath.

"From Daniel.""

She explained that, after Maya's birth, Emily had discovered the hospital records had been altered.

Daniel wanted to take Maya.

He claimed the child was his property because of an agreement he had made with Emily before the birth.

But Thomas had helped Emily obtain copies of the original medical records.

He had also helped her leave the hospital without Daniel knowing where she went.

"Why didn't she tell me?"" I asked.

"Because Daniel believed you were the person who helped her.""

"Why would he think that?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Detective Harris interrupted.

"We've located Thomas.""

"Where?""

"His house.""

"Has he been arrested?""

"Not yet.""

I stood.

"I want to speak to him.""

"Mr. Ellison—"

"I said I want to speak to him.""

Harris studied me.

Then he made a decision.

"You'll come with us. But you will not approach him without my permission.""

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at Thomas's house.

The front door was open.

Two officers stood in the garden.

A third was examining a car parked beside the garage.

I recognized the vehicle.

Thomas had driven Maya to school in it once when Emily was still alive.

The thought made my stomach twist.

Detective Harris entered first.

"Police!""

No answer.

We moved through the living room.

Everything appeared ordinary.

A television.

A bookshelf.

A family photograph.

Then I noticed a picture frame on the fireplace.

It showed Thomas standing beside Emily.

They were smiling.

Maya was sitting between them.

She looked about two years old.

I picked up the photograph.

On the back was a handwritten note.

To Thomas. Thank you for giving me another chance.

I looked at Harris.

"What does this mean?""

He examined it.

"Put it down.""

I did.

Then I heard a sound upstairs.

A floorboard creaked.

The officers drew their weapons.

"Police! Come downstairs!""

Silence.

Then a man's voice.

"Marcus?""

My blood ran cold.

Thomas appeared at the top of the staircase.

He looked exactly as I remembered him.

Gray hair.

Kind eyes.

A familiar smile.

Except he wasn't smiling now.

"Marcus," he said softly.

"You shouldn't be here.""

I stepped forward.

"Where is my daughter?""

Thomas looked at me.

"Safe.""

"Where?""

"I can't tell you.""

I moved toward the stairs.

An officer blocked me.

Detective Harris raised his voice.

"Thomas Reed, we need you to come downstairs.""

Thomas sighed.

"That name again.""

"Your identity has been confirmed.""

He looked at me.

"Have you told him?""

I frowned.

"Told me what?""

Thomas began descending the stairs.

"About the night Maya was born.""

Harris held up a hand.

"Stop there.""

Thomas stopped.

Then he looked directly at me.

"Emily didn't give birth to Maya alone.""

I stared.

"She was in a hospital.""

"Yes. But there was someone else in that delivery room.""

"Who?""

Thomas swallowed.

"Vanessa.""

I turned toward my wife.

She was standing near the doorway.

Her face had gone white.

Thomas continued.

"Emily and Vanessa were both pregnant.""

I felt the room tilt.

"What?""

"Vanessa gave birth first. The baby died shortly afterward.""

Vanessa began shaking her head.

"Stop.""

Thomas looked at her.

"You asked me to tell him the truth.""

I stared at her.

"You had a baby?""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

"I was young.""

"When?""

"The same night Maya was born.""

I couldn't breathe.

Thomas continued.

"Daniel had arranged for the two babies to be registered under different identities. He wanted to use Vanessa's child as leverage against Emily.""

"Why?""

"Because Emily was refusing to cooperate.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"What happened to your baby?""

Her eyes filled.

"It died.""

Thomas nodded.

"The hospital recorded the death. But the records were altered afterward.""

I felt sick.

"Why?""

"Because someone wanted to make it appear that Vanessa had given birth to Maya.""

I stared at Thomas.

"Who?""

He looked toward Vanessa.

"She did.""

Vanessa shook her head violently.

"No! That's not what happened!""

Thomas stepped closer.

"You signed the paperwork.""

"Because Daniel threatened me!""

"You could have gone to the police.""

"He said he'd kill Emily!""

Thomas's voice softened.

"And you believed him.""

Vanessa collapsed into a chair.

I looked between them.

"Why did Emily let me raise Maya?""

Thomas answered quietly.

"Because Emily knew the child was going to need someone Daniel couldn't control.""

I frowned.

"What does that have to do with me?""

Thomas looked at me for a long moment.

Then he said something I wasn't prepared to hear.

"Marcus, you weren't chosen because Emily loved you.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Then why?""

"Because you were the only person Daniel couldn't threaten.""

"Who was I to him?""

Thomas looked toward the window.

"Before you met Emily, you worked for a private security company.""

I nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

"You were assigned to St. Mary's during an investigation into missing medical records.""

I stared.

I remembered the job.

A short contract.

A hospital security audit.

Nothing unusual.

But Thomas continued.

"You discovered that someone had been falsifying birth certificates. You reported it. The investigation was closed before it reached the authorities.""

I felt a chill.

"I don't remember any of this.""

"Because you were never told the full story.""

He reached into his pocket and removed a small photograph.

It showed a younger version of me standing outside St. Mary's.

Beside me was Emily.

And behind us stood Daniel Reed.

I stared.

The date was printed in the corner.

November 8, 2019.

The day Maya was born.

I looked at Thomas.

"Why am I in this photograph?""

Thomas's eyes filled.

"Because you were there when the babies were switched.""

My heart stopped.

"What babies?""

He looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

"Emily's baby and Vanessa's baby.""

I shook my head.

"Vanessa's baby died.""

Thomas said nothing.

I looked at him.

"Tell me where Maya is.""

Thomas reached into his jacket and removed a folded piece of paper.

He handed it to Detective Harris.

It was a photograph of a hospital nursery.

Two newborn babies lay side by side.

One had a pink blanket.

The other had a blue one.

On the back was a message.

*ONE OF THESE CHILDREN IS YOUR DAUGHTER. THE OTHER IS STILL ALIVE.*

I looked up.

Thomas was crying.

"Marcus," he whispered, "the baby Vanessa buried wasn't hers.""

He paused.

"It was Emily's.""

And suddenly, I understood why Daniel wanted the original Room 219 file.

Because Maya wasn't the only child whose identity had been changed.

May you like

Somewhere, another child was living under the wrong name.

And that child might have been growing up believing that I was the father who had abandoned her.
