Chapter 6: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

I showed Detective Harris the photograph.

He studied it without speaking.

"Do you recognize this man?""

"No.""

Rachel leaned forward.

Then she began trembling.

"That's him.""

"Your father?""

She nodded.

Detective Harris enlarged the image.

The man appeared to be in his late fifties, with gray hair and a narrow face.

He wore a dark coat.

His eyes were directed toward the camera.

He didn't look like someone hiding.

He looked like someone who wanted to be seen.

"When did you last see him?"" Harris asked.

Rachel swallowed.

"Twenty years ago.""

"Where?""

"At a funeral.""

"Whose funeral?""

She looked at me.

"His.""

Detective Harris placed the phone on the table.

"Tell me exactly what happened.""

Rachel folded her hands.

"My father was a violent man. He controlled everything. Our mother couldn't leave him, and he made sure Emily and Vanessa understood that nobody would ever protect them.""

"Did he abuse them?""

Rachel nodded.

"Physically and emotionally. He also controlled the money our mother received from the hospital.""

I leaned forward.

"What hospital?""

"St. Mary's.""

I thought about the hospital bracelet.

The altered records.

The woman who looked like Emily.

Everything seemed connected to that place.

Rachel continued.

"After Emily was adopted, my father told everyone she had died. He said it was better for the family.""

"Why?""

"Because he believed she knew too much.""

"About what?""

Rachel looked toward Detective Harris.

"An illegal medical arrangement.""

The detective's expression hardened.

"What kind of arrangement?""

Rachel shook her head.

"I don't know all the details. I was a child. But I remember hearing my father arguing with a doctor about money. I remember him saying that no one would ever find out what happened to the babies.""

My stomach tightened.

"Babies?""

Rachel nodded.

"Several families were involved. Some children were given new identities. Others were placed with families who paid for private arrangements.""

Detective Harris wrote something down.

"Do you have proof?""

Rachel reached into her handbag and removed a small photograph.

This one showed a group of adults outside St. Mary's.

A younger Daniel Reed stood beside a doctor.

The same doctor appeared in another photograph from Emily's storage box.

His name was written underneath.

*DR. ALAN WHITMORE.*

Detective Harris recognized it.

"Whitmore?""

He immediately made a call.

I looked at him.

"Who is he?""

"Former director of neonatal services at St. Mary's. Retired several years ago.""

Rachel nodded.

"He handled the records.""

I remembered the report stating that Maya's birth documents had been altered.

"Can he explain what happened to Maya?""

"Possibly.""

Detective Harris stood.

"I'm going to have officers contact him.""

Rachel suddenly grabbed his sleeve.

"Don't.""

He looked down.

"Why?""

"Because he'll warn Daniel.""

The detective's eyes narrowed.

"You just told me Daniel was dead.""

Rachel shook her head.

"He controls people even when he's not physically present.""

I stood.

"Enough. I want to know where my daughter came from.""

Rachel looked at me.

"Then you need to understand something. Emily didn't hide Maya's identity because she was ashamed of her.""

"Then why?""

"She was protecting her from the people who had tried to claim her before.""

I looked at the phone again.

The message.

Ask Vanessa who she buried.

I turned toward the door.

"Where is Vanessa?""

Detective Harris checked with an officer outside.

"She's in another interview room.""

I walked there immediately.

Vanessa was sitting alone.

Her hands were folded on the table.

When she saw me, she stood.

"Marcus.""

I placed the photograph of Daniel in front of her.

Her face went completely blank.

"Who is this?""

She stared at the picture.

Then she looked away.

"Where did you get that?""

"Someone sent it to me.""

"Who?""

"That's what I want to know.""

She sat down slowly.

I pulled out the chair opposite her.

"Rachel says this is your father.""

Vanessa didn't answer.

"She says he's dead.""

Still nothing.

I leaned forward.

"Then explain why someone just sent me a photograph of him standing outside our house.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

For several seconds, the only sound was the faint hum of the ventilation system.

Finally, she spoke.

"Because I didn't bury my father.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"I buried someone else.""

"Who?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"An unidentified man.""

I felt a chill.

"Why would you do that?""

"Because Daniel told me to.""

"You're saying you helped fake his death?""

She nodded.

"Twenty years ago, he came to me and said he needed to disappear. He told me he had enemies. He said if anyone knew he was alive, they would hurt me and Rachel.""

"Did Emily know?""

"She found out later.""

"When?""

Vanessa looked at the photograph.

"After Maya was born.""

I tightened my jaw.

"Why did Emily put that key in Luna's collar?""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"Because she knew I would never search for it there.""

"Why?""

"Because I hated that cat.""

I stared at her.

She looked down.

"Emily knew how much Maya loved Luna. She knew I'd never risk hurting Maya directly.""

I remembered the freezer.

My hands curled into fists.

"You put Luna inside that freezer.""

Vanessa began sobbing.

"I didn't mean to kill her.""

"You closed the lid.""

"I wanted Maya to stop asking questions.""

"You terrorized a six-year-old child.""

"I know.""

"You watched her beg you to let the cat out.""

Vanessa covered her face.

"I know!""

I stood.

"Why?""

She looked up.

"Because Maya found something in the collar.""

I froze.

"What?""

"The brass key.""

I stared at her.

"How did she find it?""

"Emily had shown her the collar before she died. She told Maya there was a secret inside it, but that she wasn't old enough to understand.""

My chest tightened.

"Why didn't you just take the collar?""

"I tried. Maya wouldn't let me.""

"So you put the cat in the freezer?""

Vanessa nodded weakly.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Detective Harris entered the room.

"Mrs. Ellison, we need to discuss something else.""

Vanessa wiped her face.

"What?""

He placed a printed photograph on the table.

It showed a black sedan parked outside St. Mary's earlier that morning.

A man stood beside it.

Daniel Reed.

But there was something else in the photograph.

The passenger-side door was open.

And inside the car sat a little girl wearing a pink jacket.

Maya.

I felt my knees weaken.

"Where did you get this?""

"Hospital security footage.""

"She's in that car?""

Harris nodded.

"We believe the vehicle left approximately ten minutes before the call from your daughter.""

I turned toward Vanessa.

"You knew.""

She shook her head desperately.

"No. Marcus, I swear I didn't know.""

Detective Harris pointed to the timestamp.

"There's more.""

He enlarged the photograph.

On the rear window was a handwritten message, visible from the camera angle.

Three words.

*BRING THE FATHER.*

I looked at Vanessa.

Then at Detective Harris.

"Which father?""

Nobody answered.

My phone rang again.

The same unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice came through.

Calm.

Measured.

Almost friendly.

"Marcus Ellison.""

"Where is my daughter?""

"Safe.""

"Who are you?""

A quiet chuckle.

"You've spent six years believing you were her father. Emily spent six years making sure you never questioned it.""

I gripped the phone.

"If you touch her—"

"Listen carefully. I don't want to hurt Maya.""

"Then bring her home.""

"Not until we settle something Emily left unfinished.""

"What?""

The man paused.

Then he spoke slowly.

"I want the original Room 219 file.""

I looked at Detective Harris.

The man continued.

"And I want the brass key.""

My throat tightened.

"Why?""

"Because the documents in that room aren't the only records Emily left behind.""

A faint sound came through the phone.

A little girl crying.

"Daddy?""

"Maya!""

The man immediately spoke over her.

"One more thing, Marcus. Don't trust Vanessa.""

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Vanessa was crying silently.

Detective Harris reached for his radio.

But before he could speak, my phone received another message.

This time, it was a photograph of a document.

An old hospital consent form.

At the bottom was a signature I recognized immediately.

My own.

Except I had never signed it.

And beneath my signature was a sentence that made my blood run cold.

*I hereby surrender all parental rights to the child identified as Baby Girl Ellison.*

May you like

The date was the day Maya was born.

And the witness signature belonged to Emily.
