Chapter 5: The Name on the Birth Record

Detective Harris wouldn't let us leave immediately.

He arranged for Maya to stay in a private consultation room with a female officer while he questioned Rachel and Vanessa separately.

I sat outside, staring at the hospital floor.

My daughter was only a few feet away.

Yet it felt as if someone had taken the ground out from under my entire life.

A nurse brought me coffee.

I didn't touch it.

After twenty minutes, Detective Harris emerged.

"Mr. Ellison, I'd like you to come inside.""

I followed him into a small interview room.

Rachel was sitting at the table.

Vanessa was nowhere to be seen.

"Where is my wife?""

"Being interviewed separately.""

I sat down.

Detective Harris placed three documents in front of me.

The first was Maya's original birth record.

The second was a hospital discharge summary.

The third was a laboratory report.

"Mr. Ellison, we contacted the hospital's records department. There are inconsistencies in the documents associated with your daughter's birth.""

I looked at the first page.

My name was listed as the father.

Emily's name was listed as the mother.

I recognized the document.

I'd signed it myself.

Detective Harris tapped the second page.

"This is a record of a correction submitted approximately eleven months after Maya's birth.""

"What correction?""

"An amendment to the original maternal identification.""

I read the line.

The mother's name had been changed.

From Emily Ellison to Vanessa Reed.

I looked up.

"Why?""

Rachel answered.

"Vanessa claimed Emily had stolen her child.""

I stared at her.

"That's ridiculous.""

"That's what Emily said.""

Detective Harris continued.

"The amendment was later withdrawn. However, the original submission remains in the hospital's archived records.""

"Who submitted it?""

"Someone using Vanessa's identity.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Why would she do that?""

Rachel looked down.

"Because she wanted Maya.""

I felt anger rise in my chest.

"She already had a child to love. She was married to me. Maya called her Mom.""

Rachel's eyes filled.

"That's why Emily was so frightened.""

I looked at her.

"What happened between you and Emily?""

Rachel folded her hands.

"When Emily was eighteen, she discovered that our mother had been receiving money from a man connected to the hospital where we were born.""

"What man?""

Rachel shook her head.

"She never told me his name.""

Detective Harris slid the laboratory report toward me.

"This is a preliminary relationship analysis conducted before Emily died. It indicates that Vanessa is biologically related to Maya.""

I examined the page.

"That's consistent with what Rachel said.""

"Yes. But there's another test.""

He placed a second report beside it.

The document was dated six months before Emily's death.

The subject names were partially obscured.

However, one line was clearly visible.

*PATERNAL MATCH: EXCLUDED.*

I frowned.

"What does this mean?""

"It means the person tested was not Maya's biological father.""

I stared at the result.

"Who was tested?""

Detective Harris hesitated.

"Your name.""

The room seemed to shrink.

I looked at the report again.

Then I looked at Rachel.

"You're saying I'm not Maya's father?""

Rachel didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she reached into her handbag.

"I brought something Emily asked me to keep.""

She placed a small photograph on the table.

It showed Emily sitting in a hospital bed, holding a newborn baby.

I recognized the room.

I had been there.

But the photograph had been taken several hours before I arrived.

Rachel turned it over.

For the man who loves my daughter even if he never knows the truth.

My throat tightened.

"Who was Emily talking about?""

Rachel's eyes moved toward the door.

"She never told me.""

I stood.

"This is insane. I was there when Maya was born. I raised her. I signed her papers.""

Detective Harris nodded.

"None of that changes the biological question. But it doesn't change your legal status as her father either. We still need to establish exactly what happened.""

I sat down again.

"Why would Emily let me believe Maya was mine?""

Rachel's voice softened.

"Because she loved you.""

"That's not an answer.""

"She was afraid you'd be pulled into something dangerous.""

I looked at the photograph.

"Something involving Vanessa?""

Rachel nodded.

"Vanessa wasn't the only person searching for Maya.""

I stared at her.

"Who else?""

Rachel looked toward the window.

"A man.""

Before I could ask another question, the interview-room door opened.

A uniformed officer entered.

"Detective, we found something in Mrs. Ellison's vehicle.""

Harris stood.

"What?""

"A second phone. It's been switched off, but the messages are still accessible.""

He placed an evidence bag on the table.

Inside was a black smartphone.

I recognized it.

Vanessa had told me she'd lost that phone months ago.

Detective Harris examined the screen.

"Do you recognize this device?""

"Yes. It's my wife's.""

The officer unlocked it using a method authorized during the investigation.

A messaging application appeared.

The most recent conversation was with an unnamed contact.

The messages began six weeks earlier.

*VANESSA:* He's starting to ask questions.

*UNKNOWN:* Then make sure he doesn't reach the box.

*VANESSA:* Emily left instructions.

*UNKNOWN:* Emily is dead.

*VANESSA:* The key is with the cat.

I felt my blood turn cold.

The next message was from the unknown contact.

*UNKNOWN:* Then get it before Marcus finds out what happened in 2019.

I read the date.

2019.

The year Maya was born.

Another message appeared.

*VANESSA:* What if she remembers?

*UNKNOWN:* She's six. She remembers nothing.

Then Vanessa had sent a photograph.

It was Maya sleeping in her bed.

Underneath it, she'd written:

*She's beginning to ask about the woman in the blue coat.*

Rachel covered her mouth.

I looked at her.

"What woman in the blue coat?""

Rachel began crying.

"Emily's mother.""

I frowned.

"You said she was dead.""

Rachel shook her head.

"I said Emily believed she was dead.""

Detective Harris leaned forward.

"Who is this unknown contact?""

Rachel looked at the phone.

"I think I know.""

"Who?""

She took a trembling breath.

"His name is Daniel Reed.""

I stared.

"Who is Daniel Reed?""

Rachel closed her eyes.

"Our father.""

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then she added something that made the room feel even colder.

"He's been dead for twenty years.""

Detective Harris studied her.

"Are you certain?""

Rachel nodded.

"I buried him.""

"Then someone is using his name.""

Rachel shook her head slowly.

"No.""

She looked at me.

"Because Daniel Reed was never the man who died in that grave.""

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

There was no greeting.

No explanation.

Just a photograph.

It showed a man standing outside my house.

He was holding a newspaper.

On the front page was a photograph of Emily.

Beneath it was a headline.

*LOCAL WOMAN'S DEATH REOPENED AFTER NEW EVIDENCE EMERGES.*

May you like

The message contained six words.

*Ask Vanessa who she buried.*
